You can't compare this to Y2K. Y2K was based on the fact that computers will shut down because it wasn't designed to handle the year past 2000. This solar storm in 2012 is very real. Nearly ALL scientist agree that we are going to have a major solar storm in 2012. Problem is no scientist can predict to what degree this will affect our sattelites and power grids. If it is really bad then we are talking about economic disaster that will make Recession look like Picknic.

An event like this could just well be a blessing in disguise, think about all the dangerous electronic weapons in the world that would be rendered completely useless. No electricity, no computer, no phone use...we would literally be going back to basics. No, hopefully it will not be that bad, but it could knock-out a few electrical grids and disable some satellites. Of course nobody really knows for sure, in 1859 they didn't have electrical grids or satellites! It's not about the end, it's about a new beginning!

This is a very interesting issue. I wonder how much worse the solar storms can get once the Sun, its ecliptic and the galaxy rotation plane come into one line in 2012 and the peak of solar cycle coincides with this.... some serious shit coud come down. Did the Mayans know something we don't?

It's really very tough to know exactly what will happen! As we get closer to 2012 things are supposed to start happening more and more at an increasing rate. There could even be some strong solar flares that could knock out electrical grids and communication systems. Again, nobody really knows precisely, it's something that will have to be experienced!

Charged particles from solar wind can't hurt us, even with our poles being vulnerable due to a shift, the charged protons would just get absorbed into our atmosphere, and even very serve winds wouldn't do much but know out a few grounded wires. If were to be threatened by anything form the sun hurting us it would just be over-sized solar flares due to the sun being on its 24th cycle.

So then, an over-sized solar-flare could really damage the electrical infrastructures or grids which we rely on very heavily for modern day life as we know it!
