I'm personally amazed at the amount of work the Japanese voice actors put into actually trying to match what they say/sing with the premade mouth movements of the puppets. But, that work is hardly a surprise coming from the Japanese. They seem to always do their best they possibly can. :)

IF EVERYONE wants to know why he said 'SHINIGAMI' he said "shinigami sae nigedashita" which translates as "Even the Death God/Grim reaper ran away" (Jack is so scary he chased the Death God away, that's what he pretty much said. Not that he is one. But he DID said 'boku wa kyoufu no ou, soshite sou akuma da' which means "I am the king of dread, and its so, that I'm a demon." :D Does that help?

Actually I think a lot of the depressing tone we get in the English version is due to the lyrics, which are full of depressing words even in the parts where Jack isn't intending to sound so depressed (because, after all, moans and screams aren't depressing to him). I don't think any lack of depression is due to the singer, who does a very good job in my opinion.
