Aaah, 526 - a fine engine, as I was told. I was only 3 weeks when the mighty "Duchess of Gloucester" made her final run. Didnt exactly see her as, well, i was little and perhaps throwing tantrums for a breastfeed!!! But I was around when she was in steam, breathing the air as she did. Perhaps I did pick up her passing presence? The Mount Barker to VH branch has been fully upgraded back to trafficable condition, thou I believe there are some speed restrictions in some area.
You are right again,Essington-Lewis is 523 and the Duchess 526.They were all fine locomotives and they were the motive power for the majority of trips i made during my child-hood traveling from Port Pirie to Adelaide during the 1950s.The train always stopped at Bowmans for a refreshment stop and the loco was given a long drink (of water).
My late Father was a loco man (SAR & CR) and preferred 620/520 workings rather than the "Webb" engines, particularly in the Adelaide Hills during Winter.
Man, I would do anything to be in your shoes back then. I was born in '71 and missed all the big ARHS runs I have read so many times. Still, i did take several rides with 520, 621, the Rx's and of course the dolly tank. Love every minute of it, the passing scenery, the people like you and, all those special moments - something I will cherish forever. I was 5 years old when I went to Peterborough for the big centenary weekend in 76. Fabulous time. That was when I have fallen in love with 520.
Yes..the 620 class were a fine looking locomotive and were versatile with passenger and freight loadings particularly over flat terrain.Could handle the East-West express with ease and up to 70mph (with good track conditions)although this duty was given to the 520 class in the 1940s and 50s.
It is a pity that another one was not saved for Tourism/Steamranger use.Of course 626 is on static display at NRM but restoration costs are now prohibitive.
Erm, dont you mean 624? Meanwhile 621 has been repaired and is about to 'hit the rails' this Sunday to, where else but Victor Harbor. Now lets do something about 520? Make some noise....'GET SIR MALCOLM BACK IN STEAM!!!!!'
Hope u didnt plan to derail it? Heh. Yes sadly the beloved jolly green whispering giant is not running anymore, since 10 years ago due to tender badly rusted out inside-out. Considering the loco have been faithful for more than 55 years (up to 1998) u can understand the condition (and age) of it. At last count, to get it back in tip top condition approx half a mil might be needed. Not just the tender but the boiler itself as well. Talk about double whammo!! Hope you're well loaded? Donations?
I was on that trip. Definitely to Outer Harbour & return.
I even saw my back yard at Port Adelaide.

Yep,you are correct..624 it is..must be confused with 526 Essington Lewis (i think)
What condition is the Mt Barker-Victor Harbor track in these days? Must get down there again soon and ride the rails.
I guess Sir Malcolm needs wheels or is it a new boiler..sounds expensive!!!
