I just read the first trade of scalped. I dont get it. The art is good but i find the writing soooooo poor. I'm not drawn in by the weak characterization. Why do i care about what happens to them? Please explain. Im at a loss
these guys put me on to the best comics i've ever read, but...
that said, i question why locke and key is rated higher than scalped this year...i thought the suspense and fear of the former fell off, while the dramatic tension of the latter grew to an impeccable height.
strangely, from experience, i think that both of these titles are better read in trade format (or at least reading story arcs back to back) ...what do you think?
@gdkeen Hmmm... I actually love the single issues of Locke & Key, as I think Joe Hill does a great job of making every issue self contained, while continuing the ongoing story. But! I can see wanting to read them as a Book, as well :)
The penultimate chapter in the Scott Pilgrim saga is certainly worth mentioning. Hands down the strongest book of the year (I'm slightly biased, SP being my favorite book EVER). Oni Press published some great stuff, like the recent Love Buzz and the fifth Wet Moon book (that ending!) amongst other things.
A surprisingly strong book from 2009 was Image's Soul Kiss, written by Steven T Seagle. The strongest point was the art by Marco Cinello, an animator on SpongeBob Squarepants, of all things.
Deadpool Merc With Mouth were was he. He wasn't here!! Deadpool had sdo much apperances in comics since wolirne orgins and they were all great cameos not to mettion all his own sesies like Merc. with a mouth and DeadpoolTM and Deadpool team up and many others. I'm just saying he desverts to be in this list. And Yes I'm a Deadpool Fan.
DC's second features don't come in actual issues of their own, right? 'cause, like, i've seen them in detective comics for example, but not on their own.
I'm just confused, since you didn't make it clear, I don't wanna go looking for an actually Second Feature issue, lol.
Here's my opinion of your guys' five...Scalped is fantastic, there hasn't been a bad issue yet; I don't care for DC's second features, but at least offers more bang for your buck; haven't read Locke and Key; I really want to read Batwoman, but had to drop Detective Comics because money's tight; and I've yet to read Iron Man, but whenever I see Matt Fraction's name I twitch. His Punisher run might as well have been an act of genocide.
Detective is #1 of 2009 for me & all the rest in the top 5 are high on my list, except for Iron Man, which I don't read -- looks like I will have to change that!
Alright guys, totally awesome as always. But please, give some more love to Top Cow! It's a considerably fresh, young universe with a lot of good characters. I love the art of Stepan Sejic (sorry but that name is impossible to get right) and the blurred lines of good and evil.
Locke and Key No.3? I like Batwoman (haven't read Invincible Ironman this year but will check it out) but Locke and Key is shaping up to be one of my favourite top 10 series of all time. Oh also did i mention the Boys? I think you guys need a gag order taken out on pete on these things so that there is less old man logan and other crapola
It was awesome to see batwoman on there. I only started reading it because I herd about the Alice charicter and thought I would only stay on for that arc, but I just had to keep going. Its such an interseting way to tell her origin.
Disappointed to see Batman and Robin was not in the top 5. However, Im glad Detective Comics was up there, although I would argue it should have been number 1.
man i stoped reading ironman because of what a huge dick he became. i've been waiting for marvel to fix him and restore him to his right full place in the marvel universe and now i can finnally start picking it up again. thank you guys for making ironman #1 happy new year comicbookclub!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
Yeah there was Cable, but like Deadpool or Wolverine's other titles, I tend to think if them as more solo then X-related in a sense. But you are right. Good to know :)
Great choices. I can't argue. Wow Marvel is following DC. First time I ever heard that. I have to read Iron Man now. Look forward to another year of reviews. Happy New Year! :-)
Good call on the number 1 guys. i guess people were expecting Blackest night. however you guys really need to pick up Iron man they raise good points on how awesome it is.
I had my 'Sceptic' hat on watching this and I must say I couldn't agree more with your picks - maybe Scalped could have been higher but you guys really boiled down this years hits spot on.
I thought Iron Man had been consistently average since the reboot, very surprised it made number 1. scalped and Locke and Key seem to be getting huge praise from you and other reviews I've seen, guess I'll check them out.
The fact that Chew is nowhere on this list is such a massive fail. It should be in the top 5.

Great List but in my view you forgot Young Liars, Walking dead, Batman and Robin, Green Lantern and GLC.
But I understand you have to make a choice. And I can't be more agree for Hulk team-up n°1.
That's a real boldly badass comic.
