They're more like little machines than thinking, feeling creatures.
Humans, on the other hand, possess such a high degree of emotional sentience that it gets the better of their reasoning and they begin to apply human traits to non-human creatures.

Crickets, roaches, and other various swarming/colony insects will eat each other if food sources are low or non-existent.
