level 1 and 2 cache in the cpu ends up making ram the level 3 cache, but the amount of data ram can cache is dictated by the chipset
and level2 in the cpu so, if you add more ram than the chipset can allow the ram to cache your pc will actually be slower.
for example on older computers all the Intel Socket 7 chipsets (FX, VX, HX, and TX) had the max 64 MB cacheable limitation for ram use and adding more ram would slow your pc down.down

when charaters enter a map on the fly and the game lags to a halt is also because of the pagefile being on on an hdd or sdd whith crippling write and read latencies
And here i could debate the common misconceptions and fallacies about ram for hours, but the fact is system ram will cache only 10% of game data and ram cannot fill up, which is why a pagefile is necessary and exists in the first place, if you could fill ram, pagefiles wouldnt even be implemented in recent windows operating systems. I have 2gigs of ram and battlefield 2 needs and uses 1.5 MB of pagefile regardless of my ram amount
so the pagefiles HDD speed is actually critical for videogaming
You can completely disable the swap file and the system flies. Most games play fine too!
Anyway, i know that the swap file is often used, but in systems with a lot of ram, i don't really think that a programmer would be so stupid to load part of a level on the swap file. Well in some games, yes. But most of the good engines out there, completely disregard the swap file.
I say again. COD4 needs everything it needs in memory. When the time comes it reloads!

you don't need faster cpus and vidcards and chipsets and faster ram you need a fast writing hard drive to have a fast pc, higher bandwidth clocks is the only illusionary innovative selling point in the pc industry but its not necessary to get a fast pc, low latency is whats important not higher clocks.
And unfortunately as clock speeds get higher in a circuit, latency gets higher due to high wattage&heat, increased performance in electronic transistor circuits can only come with low wattage and low heat, still your pc is only as fast as its slowest part wich is still the storage (hdd or sdd) after 2 decades
the only fast drive out there that makes a computer really fast is a an gigabyte iram or hyperdrive4 wich are either crippled by the industry or overpriced so not much enthusiasm here.

I was considering buying an i7 myself, but then i concluded that the cost was much greater than the gains it would give me.
So i got a Q9550 instead and overclocked it to 4,1Ghz instead! All in all, i saved 250 euros which i will invest on the 5870X2 once it comes out!
12MB Yorkfields and Nehalems, are actually on par in gaming, mhz to mhz, but you can oc the Yorkfield much better with just an air cooler, as i did!

Ram will cache data but and if you wanted to fill ram you would need to use a ramdisk to allocate data on ram to full capacity.
For ram to cache more data and use less pagefile you would need multiple level ram, a lot like the 3 levels of caches in cpu's.

for example on older computers all the Intel Socket 7 chipsets (FX, VX, HX, and TX) had the max 64 MB cacheable limitation for ram use and adding more ram would slow your pc down.down

Well thanks! :) Although i agree with you for the most part, what you must realise is that an SSD cannot make your gaming experience, that much better. It would make a great difference only in streaming games like Oblivion or Gothic 3.
For example once a level of COD4 has loaded, then the storage devices are irrelevant. What you need are indeed ultra speed CPUs and GPUs, either you like it or not.
A much better argument, would be the lack of optimisation in games,hence the lower performance.

no problem ;-) but you forgot that when COD4 has loaded it has loaded in the pagefile which relies on the hard drive write and read speeds. Stutters and micro stutters during gameplay is due to hdd write&read latency W
when charaters enter a map on the fly and the game lags to a halt is also because of the pagefile being on on an hdd or sdd whith crippling write and read latencies

And here i could debate the common misconceptions and fallacies about ram for hours, but the fact is system ram will cache only 10% of game data and ram cannot fill up, which is why a pagefile is necessary and exists in the first place, if you could fill ram, pagefiles wouldnt even be implemented in recent windows operating systems. I have 2gigs of ram and battlefield 2 needs and uses 1.5 MB of pagefile regardless of my ram amount
so the pagefiles HDD speed is actually critical for videogaming

You can completely disable the swap file and the system flies. Most games play fine too!
Anyway, i know that the swap file is often used, but in systems with a lot of ram, i don't really think that a programmer would be so stupid to load part of a level on the swap file. Well in some games, yes. But most of the good engines out there, completely disregard the swap file.
I say again. COD4 needs everything it needs in memory. When the time comes it reloads!

that hasn't been my experience with computers in the 15 years ive owned and troubleshooted them, corporations will promote and provide watered down technical info for non-engineer masses on the internet but their info is marketing and sales biased! truthful technical information dont bring sales, because like i said before companies want to sell you their products whether you need them or not. you don't need faster cpus and vidcards and chipsets and faster ram you need a fast writing hard drive to have a fast pc, higher bandwidth clocks is the only illusionary innovative selling point in the pc industry but its not necessary to get a fast pc, low latency is whats important not higher clocks.

And unfortunately as clock speeds get higher in a circuit, latency gets higher due to high wattage&heat, increased performance in electronic transistor circuits can only come with low wattage and low heat, still your pc is only as fast as its slowest part wich is still the storage (hdd or sdd) after 2 decades
the only fast drive out there that makes a computer really fast is a an gigabyte iram or hyperdrive4 wich are either crippled by the industry or overpriced so not much enthusiasm here.

Actually you need just two. The GTX 280 is a powerhouse but its too damn expensive. One GTX 280 costs about 30 euros less than the 4870X2 where i live and at some games the 4870X2 performs 100% better (conan,clear sky and more), so fuck off Nvidia! :)
