RIP Fernando, you are missed so very much. I remember your eight hour workdays, your tenacity, dedication and good humor. Eras el mejor baliarín de ballet que dio Cuba y este pais, por no decir el mundo.
Thank you so much for posting. I attended this porformance in New York in 1978. It was part of a benefit performance with many great dancers participating in several works. I was stunned by this particular performance. It was electrifying - live on the stage. Will never forget it!
Magnificent...I had the pleasure of seeing these two dance together during ABT's spring season in New York. It is too bad they didn't dance together more regularly because their partnership was nothing short of electric...they were incredible....wow!!!!!!

This could have been one of the great partnerships. They would have been perfect for one another both in terms of bodies, amazing feet and legs, dramatic ability... a dream team. This is such a tantalizing fragment, a tease of what could have been.
@Icaprio86 oh my gosh that is amazing!! i only wish i could have seen it! she is my all time favorite ballerina she has such a stage presence and love of what she does and it shines through in her dance! i believe she is one of the baest in the world!
I was fortunate to be in the audience for this performance in 1978 in New York. It was part of a benefit by the American Ballet Theater. I recall being absolutely riveted to these two great performers. Makarova (who was the best ballerina I had ever seen) and Bujones were simply electrifying. I always remembered it as one of the best performances I had ever seen; and now to stumble on this video is such a surprise. Thank so much for posting!
I had to clap in front of YTube from 6:50 up to 6:58. Bravo!!! He is so perfect. He should have had Makarova as a partner throughout his career instead of the other taller ballerinas. He and Makarova - just perfect. Bravo!
@BalinSilay Agree! Cynthia Gregory was too tall for him (and Van Hamel too). He and Makarova was an excellent match, but she usually danced with Ivan Nagy at ABT, an incredible partner but not the most exciting dancer.
parmi, but; the you have a video of yourself dancing Don Quijote live in New yor? so, ...if yes, published, if not, don't write any more, you don't know what are you talking about. Thoses are legend based in their interpretation, not in their "passe" as you said. brrr.
What a despicable snob and boor you are. In civilized society we don't comment on a woman's looks, ever. Makarova has no problem in that department. And to insult her dancing shows unimaginable lack of taste.
Finesse, style, elegance, musicality, tecnique, artistry.... you name it, you got it! Those were true artists... This is what Ballet is about, not some cheap circus.... THANK YOU sooo much for posting!
Thank you for posting this wonderful clip. Do you see how high they jump and how gracefully they land, all the while keeping it within a beautiful legato phrase and in the style? It's breathtaking!!!
very nice coment Bujones had his own magic, elegance, talent, tecnique, and that million dolar smile ! his olnlu presence fullfiled the whole satge..(stage),hi was a great dancer.
Oh how I remember this! I was there, and damn lucky at that. I don't think I'll ever see a dancer who so completely held the stage like Makarova- it's a phenemona unique to her, and it almost hypnotic.
Respect must be paid to the dead. She was way out of line and whatever expletive I said, it didn't match her evil comments. As far as Russia you are so naieve, the hammer and sicle may be gone but the KGB still runs the show.
How can someone watch this video and not see beauty? Comparing artists is so silly. I've seen videos of Bujones when not in his prime but this is how I will remember him. Brilliant is a great word for him; Makarova is divine. Thank you both.
Ladyinredshoes, change your shoes, because you stink, same as your coments. Wonder who you think you are to be so unrespecful to the artist. I may not like Zackarova, and in fact I don´t but I would never say she is not good, because she is. You are so unrespecful, you shouls shut up and learn respect
Life at times was hard on him!All of the praise he got he EARNED because he danced his heart out! I am not here to say who is better or not that is a matter of a opinion! But before you criticize agressively get your facts straight!"Bujones offers something else. Brilliancy. It is a quality rarely found in male dancers. Too often it is mistaken for mere bravura. But bravura can be raw while Bujones makes bravura diamond-sharp."
Concerning the double piruette which you keep talking about Fernando was famous for always finishing his steps in PERFECT FIFTH!!! He was an extremely polished dancer! He was not a showoff he was very humble and a perfectionist! Did you ever even take a class with him? Because if you talk to his teachers Stanley Williams and his collegues like ABT director Kevin Mackenzie they would completely disagree with your remark!
wow what an aggressive comment against Fernando and so untrue. Fernando had the classicism of Eric Bruhn and the power of Nureyev he merged these two styles and created a style of his own, his long and lean legs and feet were the perfect body of a prince unlike Misha who was much shorter then him and never had his line!

Hello, well, i will not insult or mean to do so, but ive studied with the best masters in different countries, i dont care if its bujones, it doesnt mean anything. performance is on stage and that very day, he could barely rutn a double pirouette, not to mention he could not finalize any of them, like any amateur...if we pay an etoile, I want to see an etoile.
alas, he is but a cockish man, mostly becauss after watching Misha.and bujones gets an applause sorry.
LadyNredShoes: With that name you chose, you are showing your lack of taste. You are a complete ignorant not only about ballet, but also about Arts in general.
Bujones was a legend when alive, and still is a legend. Everybody now knows that Bujones is the finest dancer America and Europe have ever seen on stage. His only mistake was not to have accepted the invitation the Royal Ballet and L'Opera de Paris did to him; instead, he decided to stay here, when "Misha" was directing ABT. Another thing you may want to research about (if you have brains to do research) is that now it is known that "Misha" was jealous of Bujones' impeccable technique.
Somebody sounds a bit full of themself. Throwing out the fact that you 'studied with the best masters in different countries' is like name-dropping - just trying to reinforce yourself. You shouldn't judge based on ONE performance you saw. It's similar with music. A band makes one bad song or CD, and someone wants to make them out to be the worst band in the world. From what I see here, your statements are well proven false. Until we see that you're better than him, do yourself a favor and hush.
Bujones rocked a whole era... and he did not need a Russian name to do it. Yes, he was a show off, SO WHAT!... Good for him and for all male dancers after him!

Appreciate your reply. For the record, I know
Russia and the former USSR very well; no
nievete exsits. As for who is running the show; don't worry. It's working. Maybe?
As for the female you ranted about: If you
are confident in your observations and beliefs and with empirical knowledge about
ballet technique with respect to the male/female dancer, it is non-relevant.
Enjoy the performance.
