Carnival is an extremely profound, beautiful and inspiring song that can be used as a deep reflection on the illusory qualities of reality. This can help you to develop a mindfulness and awareness that frees you from the bondage of mental, emotional and spiritual entanglements in the iillusions of life, and opens up a space of peace, confidence and inner joy within yourself that gradually brings you into touch with the boundless wisdom and compassion of your true nature.
I just watched the film "Monster" and was so overwhelmed with emotion. I began researching her story online and found out this was her favorite song. As I listen to it I can understand why. You might call me crazy, but my heart breaks for her and to think of the torment she must have gone through to end up where she did in life to commit such evil. I honestly hope she is truly at peace now.
@ApolloShaunie98 was a woman who was a prostitute and murderer to mind about 6 men, pipe a lesbian relationship and stormy, the day of his trial aileen lesbian couple the signal before the court as the only responsible for the killings. is a true story and very sad that Aileen was abused since childhood, her family do not help at all. There is a movie of his life called "monsters" as lead actress is Charlize Theron.
What a great song by Natalie Merchant, the entire Tigerlily album was actually pretty good. I'm really fascinated as to how a convicted serial killer who listened to this song on deathrow (and I'm also well aware of the song being played in the emotionally manipulative documentary on her too) gets more acknowledgment than the artist who wrote and performed this song. I don't know why this is so but, I'm heading towards the conclusion that these people are idiots.
One of my favorite albums of the '90s!! At first, I couldn't understand why everyone was posting about Aileen Wuomos on here. Then I found out that Aileen Wuornos had requested that Natalie Merchant's song "Carnival" be played at her funeral. Natalie Merchant commented on this when asked why her song was run during the credits of the documentary Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer.
@dusted04 I understand what you were saying. But how come people aren't saying rest in peace for the men she killed? Doing what she did was her choice, and she deserved the punishment; death. So don't question my intelligence, asshole.
She's got a rangefinder Leica, but I loved to get out to roam the streets with a Nikon FM2, push-process Tmax film and a wideangle lens to hunt for images while listening to this song on my MD player.
Then came the digital era, and a bulkier Nikon D300 with a 10-24 mm. wideangle zoom, but the thrill and feel from the words and music are still the same to me: kinda a way to open my eyes (even more) to those things.
Also, great theme to listen in Marrakech before venturing out for photographying.
I believe that Aileen was not like the image created, the fact of her being the first woman serial killer well known, made it the idea that she was a monster. I have to say that I have no sympathy for her, but as the Natalie Merchant said if the music has brought her some solace Natalie has to be grateful.
this song came out when I was 14 i remember MTV playing it all the time and hearing it on the radio, but i was indifferent to the song at the time and found it quite boring. years later as a 30 yr old I'm stumbling across this song again after not hearing it since my early teens, and I'm rediscovering just how great & amazing this song actually is.
I would think whoever is saying RIP would be a CHRISTIAN person, no matter who you are god loves us and we are c reated in his image. Jesus was killed also, and asked that they be forgiven, if he does that we are obligated to do the same, at the least. If we dont we are not able to be "his" children.
@MaulqasmPK Tell me!...if these R.I.P. Aileen people ever experienced the loss of a loved one to a killer, they wouldn't be so Fare-Thee-Well!Aileen.....get a clue....
yes RIP Aileen. may i ask, have i been blind? have i been lost? as to what Aileen was trying to say, trying to express at her deepest time of need , was she heard? were we hypnotised as to what our eyes had seen? have we ever walked the streets, the gum painted pavements that aileen tred? crowded with venders and dealers. i heard you aileen,i heard what you were trying to say,if you thought no one heard you,i did as did so many others.
No person was born in this world a serial killer, & they are still people. If you knew what she went through then you would give her the respect she deserves as a human being .This was her favourite song & by simply listening to the lyrics you can begin to understand how lost &lonely she must have been feeling .
It was awful what she did but she was incarcerated for years & yes she did have mental health problems & nothing was done to help her .she was in torment & was begging to die . She was called a serial killer by some ,psycho by others and was referenced in a film titled 'Monster' . She was able to identify with this song on an emotional level and you know what that makes her boy's & girl's ...........HUMAN R.I.P Aileen Wournous may you find the peace that you sought so dearly xx
It's still rest in peace. No serial killer was born a killer, and they are still people. They deserve some kind of respect, whether they are dead or alive.
SHE PUT UP A GREAT SHOW FOR THE PEOPLE BUT BOTTOM LINE SHE WAS A SERIAL KILLER AND WAS MENTALY DISTURBED JUSTICE WAS SERVED I STUDIED HER CASE VERY WELL AND I DID FEEL SORRY FOR HER UNTIL THE DICOVERIES I MADE, SHE WAS A KILLER AND WOULD OF KEPT GOING IF NOT COUGHT!
RIP!?!?!?!? are you people nuts that bitch was a female serial killer, RIP Mr. Dahmer you were just misunderstood................. yeah right ,Rest in hell both of em.
Great song and awesome video clip. Don't really care much that some deranged serial killer listened to it when she was in her cell waiting to be executed though.
@Tha0uTL0RD I know, but maybe her taste in music was the only thing decent about her? Actually, she probably thought it was personally written for her.
@tammy675 Thank you Tammy I really think she wasn't, there are some people who admire Manson, Wayne Gacy and all those monsters, but I don't think Aileen was a monster, and if you listen to this song very carefully you can almost feel sorry for her :(
@tammy675 Was NOT self-defense. She was a man hater, bottom line. She made sure she got herself into certain situations where she could rob & murder. I live only miles from where she was murdering and finally executed. Anybody notice the similarities in her crazy eyes to Charlie Manson's?
The film "Monster" and the documentaries about are tearing my soul completely apart... How can a Human, who is only seeking for Love, meet such crazy situations, how could Aileen have so many troubles in her life??? I truly want to find a sense in life, but what is the sense of all of this???
I feel that this video is sanctimonious as all hell: "Oh, look at me with my camera, taking pictures of all of these weird people." Trying to be "cool." In reality, capturing nothing at all. There's nothing more embarrassing and disgusting and unreal than a rich person slumming -- and recording their "slumming."
@8angst8 Making a show of being morally superior to other people but, in reality, capturing nothing at all? Isn't that a contradiction in and of itself? I find your comment interesting though, because you found it disgustingly embarrassing that a "rich" person would spend time at a lower social level than one's own through curiosities sake instead of for charitable purposes. I would find it hard to believe she made copious amounts of money on this video. Besides the guitarist is excellent. peace
@8angst8 I would say Natalie is a artist first foremost. Because she became popular, the result is that she may be modestly well-off. To write a song and put it to video that depicts ordinary people, that in my opinion are not starving to death is admirable. Artistic colorful humanism in the big city.
I was going to comment in detail on this, but then I saw your name and realized it would be pointless. There's nothing more embarrassing than some pretentious teenaged git who believes that only they understand the sufferings of the world when they probably haven't even moved out of their parents' house yet. Go write suicidal poetry in the darkest corner of your bedroom, emo.
If everyone would just open their eyes they'd see a carnival all around; mezmerized, hypnotized by all the beauty in everyone and in everything in this unique and beautiful world we live in.
Somehow this reflects on a level of understanding that I've thought of before... How we as a people play a game, put on a show, for the sake of our sociological customs. I still say that we forget sociology... Stop being sociological and be human beings for once. Instead of analyzing our interaction with reality, simply realize that you aren't interacting, you're living in existence. In essence, you are the basis of existence, while roaming through it. This is the world as we know it.
This song is touching, so touching to me. "Have I been wrong? Have I been wise? to shut my eyes and play along. Hypnotized, paralyzed by what my eyes have found" YES, NO to answer her questions in order

Sad this song was used in the Tragic Story of Aileen Wuornos aka Florida's Infamous Female Serial Killer. Aileen Endured such a Horrible Life from Birth to Death. It makes Me Wonder Why some People are even Born. Via her Tormented Life she Unfortunately Murdered 7 Men. Some I feel were quite Deserving of Their FATE! :^/
First I ever heard of Natalie Merchant is in Aileen Wuornos' bio...it was what she requested to be played at her funeral. I like it better than anything I've heard from Katy Perry but that's not sayin much because I don't know much of Ms. Perry's work either. Think I'll check out some more Natalie Merchant.
Everyone's complaining about today's music being too commercial, but I bet in the 90's plenty of people complained about it too. You think the Spice Girls weren't commercial in the 90's? Or Madonna in the 80's? Or perhaps ABBA in the 70's?
Just because something does well in the charts, does that have to mean that it's trashy commercial tripe? No.
I think people should just enjoy the music without comparing it to some other era. 20 years from now today's kids will be saying the same thing about whoever it is at the top of the charts . And they will compare them to Katy Perry.
This song was beautiful when it came out, and is beautiful now. I love that un-airbrushed look, and that soulful un-produced voice. You could hear feeling and flaw - essential to human emotional and connection
You are so right with the girl rock - it was way better in the 90s. Edie Brickell? 4 Non Blondes? FIona Apple? The girls these days have nothing on them!
this was such an amzing album every single tune on tigerlilly was a pure gem and will be still adored 100 years from now. this was one of the two most beautifull albums ever made both from the summer of 1995 the other was the smashing pumpkins, meloncholy and the infinite sadness, 16 years ago it seems so long ago now.
Even in the late 90's I remember hearing this a lot, its sad the only song I have heard by merchant on the radio in the last few years is "Thankyou", which isn't nearly as good... Anyway, I just love Natalie Merchant, she is my favorite female vocalist actually, and I do NOT like many female vocalist (to me they use bombast over expression most of the time). I love her new stuff too. :)
I could watch this video over and over... it's touching and brilliant. If you, like myself, are one of the lucky 5% on this planet who are living very comfortably, (and are even luckier to have a good family), it's a great reminder that the vast majority of people, aren't. Don't take it for granted. Count your blessings, and do what you can for others, when you get the chance. Spread the love!

In love with this song! ziva, I agree...I do watch and listen to this song over and over most days.. It is just perfection.
