@FeeLtheHertZ I doubt its arbitrary. I would assume that he uses the grip that sounds right for the music he's playing. Doesn't strike me as the kinda drummer who stubbornly uses one grip just because he's afraid of any others.

@catalystdrums123 In this video he's probably using matched because it's more comfortable. He was hitting the side snare with a rim shot each time and moving the hand from the snare to the hi-hat, so holding the stick in matched was more comfortable.

@ryder187mac He has always encouraged drummers to play matched grip over traditional and has said that the only reason he still plays traditional himself is just out of habit more than anything else. I suspect that he's finally trying to unlearn some "bad habits" and follow his own advice.

And it's obvious that "matched" is the more popular alternative because it's "easier" (I don't think so) to learn. So why's traditional grip a "bad habit" in your opinion? I wanted to learn this grip, now I'm really comfortable with it and switched completely from matched to this variation because I love the feel! Don't judge if you aren't familiar with this grip, dude.
