My 3rd 360 just busted and what you said does not work forever, what is wrong is that the video card is heaten up and break. its not the dvd drive. its the video card, Once that breaks it can' be fixed easily. If you ask microsoft for repairs after your warranty expired then they charge $120 not counting cost of shipping.

red ring or its just not reading it,if its not reading it then the lens in the dvd drive is dirty,just clean it off,then it will read fine,if it was hardware failure then it would display red lights on the front of the console,or if you have a disk in there and it just says open tray then take the disk out,close the tray,then reopen it and put the disk in there and it will read
