I remember theses teams growing up. I think the hockey of today is more skillful to a certain degree but these guys knew how to take care of bullshit on the ice. Not like the whining players of today.
Classic! I love it. Why don';t they play the organ during fights today. Hockey looked way better back in the day. Maybe I'm wrong, but these vintage clips just look way better than the new ones.
back then there was no such thing as a fight, there were only brawls because it seems like everyone has to drop the gloves as soon as one guy drops them
Poor Bob Kelly #9 got ground into mince meat. Usually it was Nystrom of the Islanders tearing him a new one but this time a Maple Leaf opened up a new hole.
I stopped watching hockey after 1983 because as we all know it became a money game. Oh... by the way if you are from Canada you'll never ever see the cup here again.... period!
@Jorge4402 not true, williams and hunter went after the little guys and star players far more often than schultz. they were 2 of the dirtiest players in hockey history. Just ask Mike Bossy and Pierre Turgeon.
Man, I'd give my eye teeth to have a team with an O'Reilly, Tiger, Shultzie, and a John Ferguson on it. They can all play this game good, too. R.I.P. John Ferguson. One of the most feared competitors to ever lace on a pair of skates
@Brian4043 Nilan not as tough as the Hammer. laraque not as good a player, Gillies = pretty tough lad though. I do so much remember the 76 cup. Montreal was awesome. Habs could sneak into the final this year. They got nothing to lose, and they are a team with the tradition of doing it all when they are supposed to just disappear. Disappearing act is Vancouver's specialty
@sparwood8 I still think those three would have handled him. But I accidentally forgot to mention Larry Robinson.I liked his reply on that HBO show broad street bullies show."When your facing a bully you fight fire with fire" Larry Robinson took care of Schultlz. Another player that comes to mind Nick Fotiu And Steve Durbano. The WHA had Gordie Gallant.
@sparwood8 How could i have forgotten Tie Domi.Have you seen the HBO show Broadstreet Bullies or the brawl between Anaheim and Calgary? It took 22minutes to finish last 2 minutes of game. Or check out "Steve Durbano goes crazy" there on you tube
tiger tosses a left sucker punch as the refs are breaking up the fight that lands on the right jaw of the hammer...at 2:34 in the clip...i'm not an m.d. but the swelling appears to have come from the sucker punch.
That's not what quite what I mean. I don't want the game to turn out to be something like it is in Slapshot. I love the old timers because even though they kicked the shit out of each other, they had a respect for each other as well. There were players with good skills but they didn't piss and moan over everything. Most players in the old days either put up or shut up until players like Gretzky came along who just complained over a solid check. You can't hit me, I'm The Great One!
@Snapscape Reminds me of Slapshot when he says "let's go play some old time hockey" and he was referencing an era with little fighting. Now we look back at old time hockey as players annihilating each other. I love all hockey eras in general, to be honest.
@ebtricks When I say "old time hockey", I refer to a time when the players were just tough and could take abuse. I don't mean badass as in going around looking to hurt someone, I mean their "take not shit" attitude. Back then there were no whiny star players who got paid 10M a year to do a job. These players played for a love of the game and played with passion, not with dollar signs. This is what I miss about those days.
@Snapscape You can still find a lot of that in modern hockey. Pretty much that's what all modern day NHL enforcers have amounted to, which is a great role to play and brings back a lot of what the game meant to be, but not all of the chaos. There's a great mix of talent and passion in today's league, which I like. Besides, hockey players look at money as something that just comes along with playing hockey, not the reason to play. And at least their not like prima donna MLB, NBA, or NFL players.
@ebtricks I have a hard time seeing that because when I see good players being traded from teams they've played for years, it's usually about money and not performance. I only make a few exceptions with people like Mike Modano and Steve Yzerman who were actually willing to take less to remain where they are.
@Snapscape No kidding. currently in the playoffs patrice Bergeron is whining about how he stuck his fingers in alex burrow's mouth and getting bit. back then, if one of these guys did the same, they wouldn't whine, they'd just punch out the biter next period.

I don't know why, but Dave's always seem to be people who get in trouble all the time, either in fighting, drugs, heavy drinking or other unhealthy things.
right on, including the animals. Tiger wasnt loved anywhere and by anyone except Mom and Dad. I wonder if Tiger would have the guts to fight Harold Ballard in the 70s. That fucker always didnt pay up whenever Darryl and Lanny came in to sign their contracts. Ballard was very morbid guy, probably over 300 pounds of pure fat, Im sure Tiger would have won by a 1-punch knock-out.
Ballard was a real piece of shit. But the good thing was this is the era when the players finally figured out that the fans were buying the tickets to see them, not Ballard in his pill box window with Clancy. Ballard and all Leaf owners have had it too easy forever, every game has been sold out since the begining of time. The only way The Leafs will win a Cup is because we desire it,not because of neccesity.

Im a Habs fan and I dont see any desire either. Its ALL about money these days. In one of Schultz's fights with Tiger Williams, Schultz wrote in his autobiography that Williams bit him on the cheek. It doesn't look that happened in this one, though they were in close with one another for awhile.
ottvalley sums it up, people just WISH their teams played this well w the combination of toughness and talent they had. plus some guy named PARENT in net.
I am sick and tired of hockey fans putting down these Flyer teams.I'm a Habs fan but I admit that the Flyers of 1973-74 and 1974-75 was the best team in hockey.Yeah, they used intimidation, but they also had the best goalie in hockey(Parent),throw in snipers like Leach,McCliesh and Barber,a classic playmaker in Bobby Clarke and what you have is a champion, never mind Schultz and Kelly, this team had some serious talent
This was Bob "Hound Dog" Kelly. "Battleship" Bob Kelly played for Pittsburgh, St Loo and Chicago. His actual name was J. Bob Kelly. He was one of the better fighters of the early - mid 70s. The Hound was an OK fighter, but not in "Battleship's" class.
Bobby Clarke was a great hockey player, no doubt. The problem was that he was lumped in with Flyers "goon" reputation. Guys like Schultz, Saleski, Kelly were neanderthals on skates whose sole purpose was beat up the other team. Fred Shero big coaching strategy was to send these guys out to totally intimidate the opposition, and it worked...for a while. Eventually other teams got their own goons and it became a true circus on ice. That was the Flyer legacy which set hockey back many years...
dude the only good thing I'll say about Clarke was that he had heart but he was one of most dirtiest cowardly players of all time... he'd start something and then back off and let the goons finish it off for him... I didn't respect him for that
I see 2 F'ers getting totally tuned by maple Leafs! man, how embarassing! Only thing more embarassing is "captain" Bobbie "knob job" Clarkie pee'ing his pants and staying far, far away. My only question - did they have to scrape the ice for the yellow stains before they could resume play?? A-hole knob job Clarke!
well in the main event, Schultzie pummeled the tiger, who could only muster a cheap punch wen schultz was restrained. Yea kelly was gotten the better of by a much bigger man but he still wanted to go more;
as for bobby, his role was not to fight but to provide playmaking prowess on both ends of the ice and goal scoring. f*ck u! how dare u defame the name of the great bobby clarke. he might not even be the greatest captain in flyers history (Primeau? Poulin? Bridgeman? fill in some of the great flyer caps i forgot) but if he had played for the Maple Queefs, he certainly would have been there best captain of all time.
morningman rofl dude go suck your moms cock, you dumb ass american who go to war for no reason shut your mouth you dumb fucking faggit I hope you fucking die.,
We love Canada, it's like having a neighbor that's is into incest and then they whine about the quality of yr worthless sex life.Stick to wackn baby seals in the head and suckn moose ck or we'll send in Sarah Palin bitch slap you. Flyers Rule ...always have, always will
why does a hockey video end up in a discussion about wars?? oh, and by the way, america's never won one on their own, 1812,iraq, vietnam, take ur pick. Canada even burned down ur white house with 1/10th the pop. how does that happen?
god i miss the gardens, what a f@cken great hockeytown. Toronto lives it. philly, eh not so much. who am i kidding, philly is the armpit of n. america and only cares about loser football teams
heh 'morningman' (sounds gay) - the only reason americans are "tougher" is that they outnumber canadians 10-1, which is also how they fight battles. you come up here and tell any 'lumberjack' that, or even look the wrong way at him , and he'll take you out to the woodshed and teach you a lesson. you're lucky we canadians gave you the game of hockey...the only real tough sport in North America. One more thing, we went and helped in WWII long before you bastards got involved
man im a canadien and i absalutaly hate the maple leaf's more like make me laughs if i ever saw matts sundin i would punch him in his butt ugly down syndrome face. my favourite team is the flyers always has always will be. B.S.B. 4 life.
Schultz had it right...hold yr nose it's Toronto, and Canada, both stink and we in the US don't like gay lumber jacks. Please stay in Canada and fk your dead bay seals. Ten Provinces?...no one fkn cares. Flyers Rule , always have always will.
Willism gave Hammer a good go. He is 3 sizes smaller than hammer. As for Guts; If the US had ANY guts, they woud renounce all ties o the UN. AND all ties to the IMF. You woul dalso go back onto the Gold standard. that won't happen though. That would take GUTS
Americans are put BACK one year when they move to canada... Our education system is that much superior to yours. As for Canadians = Cowards... that is just a brainless blanket statment designed toinflame. Nost NHL'rs are Canadians and there are very few chickens among them. Most of you cannot even name the ten Canadian Provinces. Most of us can name at least 40 US State Capitals
Could work, but Diduck better positionally, and more agile. Good shot blocker, hitter, slot cleaner upper, and he could hum a shot from the point on the PP. Tough enough. Moody though. He played well in Vancouver
hey guys, look at this poor guy safehlkewqwsadkla. He shouldn't be here with us. don't you think? We are able to have higher standards and make sure that this kind of racist people don't have the right to be with us.
Obviously you didn't read my post very well. I listed Hammer's stats. YOU are the idiot, because I am .... aww fuggit, you are just stupid. Take a reading course.
Never have I called Schultz a goon. I HAVE called you an idiot though.
perhaps you should read your post over again. learn how to write ya bonehead. is this religion overkill or are you just plain dumb? and by the way, your fantasy team is ridiculous

dude the only good thing I'll say about Clarke was that he had heart but he was one of most dirtiest cowardly players of all time... he'd start something and then back off and let the goons finish it off for him... I didn't respect him for that

At one point of time, both Dave Schultz and Tiger Williams were Kings.

A-hole knob job Clarke!

yea accept Schultz owned Williams the whole fight. Did you see Williams try to grab Schultz's hair? Yea, that worked...
accurateloan 2 years ago
well in the main event, Schultzie pummeled the tiger, who could only muster a cheap punch wen schultz was restrained. Yea kelly was gotten the better of by a much bigger man but he still wanted to go more;
georgemrns08 2 years ago
as for bobby, his role was not to fight but to provide playmaking prowess on both ends of the ice and goal scoring. f*ck u! how dare u defame the name of the great bobby clarke. he might not even be the greatest captain in flyers history (Primeau? Poulin? Bridgeman? fill in some of the great flyer caps i forgot) but if he had played for the Maple Queefs, he certainly would have been there best captain of all time.

What do you think Hammer & Tiger were saying to one another? Is that Fred Shero behind the Flyers bench? What a tie.

heh 'morningman' (sounds gay) - the only reason americans are "tougher" is that they outnumber canadians 10-1, which is also how they fight battles. you come up here and tell any 'lumberjack' that, or even look the wrong way at him , and he'll take you out to the woodshed and teach you a lesson. you're lucky we canadians gave you the game of hockey...the only real tough sport in North America.

Flyers Rule , always have always will.
morningman33 3 years ago
yeah, we will remember that when you can't get a drop of oil out of the middle east and are begging us to sell you some.
BTW, why do they call philly the city of brotherly love? sounds like a city full of homo's if you ask me.

Willism gave Hammer a good go. He is 3 sizes smaller than hammer. As for Guts; If the US had ANY guts, they woud renounce all ties o the UN. AND all ties to the IMF. You woul dalso go back onto the Gold standard. that won't happen though. That would take GUTS
sparwood8 3 years ago
Americans are put BACK one year when they move to canada... Our education system is that much superior to yours. As for Canadians = Cowards... that is just a brainless blanket statment designed toinflame. Nost NHL'rs are Canadians and there are very few chickens among them. Most of you cannot even name the ten Canadian Provinces. Most of us can name at least 40 US State Capitals

My fantasy team: 99 and 66 not allowed, just ne of them: Bertuzzi-99-Bure Shultz-Sakic-Neely Probert-Clarke-Ferguson Gillies-Bourne-Nystrom
Harvey -Orr
Stevens-Robinson
Diduck-Mcsorley
G.T. Plante/Luongo
Number5 and 6 D cannot be someone like Bourque
sparwood8 3 years ago
probably the only time Gerald Diduck will appear on a fantasy team.... LOL i think...
pipaleau 3 years ago
You number 5 and 6 guys cannot be someonelike Langway or robinson, so I stuck in two mean players
sparwood8 3 years ago
I'd put Playfair or Behn Wilson in place of Diduck
lakeerie90s 3 years ago
Could work, but Diduck better positionally, and more agile. Good shot blocker, hitter, slot cleaner upper, and he could hum a shot from the point on the PP. Tough enough. Moody though. He played well in Vancouver

Didn't Tim Horton fight Schultz at the age of 44?
Oh and safehlkewqwsadkla, Canada declared war on Germany and Japan before the US, so there.
We also won the war of 1812. Don't tempt us!
moviecodswallop 3 years ago
hey guys, look at this poor guy safehlkewqwsadkla. He shouldn't be here with us. don't you think? We are able to have higher standards and make sure that this kind of racist people don't have the right to be with us.

Tiger Williams had two seasons in which he scored 35, and 30 goals. He could make the other team somad, they'd want to kill him
Shultz had a 20 goal season scored 36 points 3 times, 34, 32 and 30 points, and 3 more in which he score 18 to 24. Not a Goon at all.
sparwood8 3 years ago
"Schultz not a goon at all" sparwood will you get friggin' serious. Why don't you dummy up for once. what the christ are you smokin' brother. geez
gcdcjccc 3 years ago
Obviously you didn't read my post very well. I listed Hammer's stats. YOU are the idiot, because I am .... aww fuggit, you are just stupid. Take a reading course.
Never have I called Schultz a goon. I HAVE called you an idiot though.
sparwood8 3 years ago
perhaps you should read your post over again. learn how to write ya bonehead. is this religion overkill or are you just plain dumb? and by the way, your fantasy team is ridiculous
