I know that when people see me and spit in my path, it isn't because they're being teichou.

Something I've noticed in Japan regarding blacks is a sort of generalized respect for their "coolness." Perhaps a lack of cultural awareness of different cultures makes them more comfortable with stereotyping, but they often bring blacks into their concept of "black culture," which is essentially hip-hop culture.
As for the Africans, most of themn belong to a subset of people who come for business or are touts for clubs. That subset is usually a pretty aggressive lot.

Hi guys im japanese. It seems like some of you just dont get it. I mean, Japan is not a multicultural country yet so it is kind of not normal to see foreigners (called Gaijin in japan). So some japanese people may stay away from foreigners like whites and blacks as they dont know them well. But trust me, it is not that they r racist against them. Its just that they r not used to seeing foreigners.

I believe you're right about the whole in and out thing; I lived in japan for 4 years when my dad was stationed there and it seemed like it didn't matter with who they alienated if you were a Gaijin. If anything, they like black people more than us haha. What they really hate is us Gaijin guys because we or it seems like we have an advantage over the natives with women; another thing is if you don't speak their language. But for the most part all the Japanese I've met have been super nice.

Way too many videos about being black in (insert name here) country on youtube. Everyone alive faces adversity, but most deal with it and work hard to make their own lives better. The black American experience is to focus only on your adversity, and then demand that those you believe cause it then pay for you to live (which helps keep it going). you should read about this legendary figure known as Yasuke, he was an African(from the Congo I think) servant of an Italian Jesuit who travel to japan in the late 1500s, he spoke Italian and Japanese pretty well. During his tenure there, he became close friends with the warlord Oda Nobunaga, who was impressed by his strength and knowledge of the language, they talked together alot(or so the legend) Nobunaga even took him on as a student in swordsmanship and made him a body guard....
however there is debate whehter it actully happened due to the fact that there is no record of Yasuke after the death of Nobunaga(killed by a rival) but the legend does state that after being defeated in the seige against nobunaga's daughter and retainer(whom yasuke fought alongside, and fought well or so the legend goes), instead of killing him, they sent him to the church of the jessuits who took him home. no mention of him in western history, becuz, blacks didnt matter that much back then.

I agree with you. There isn't really racism towards any specific skin colour. My grandparents are white American and German, black Caribbean and Indian which makes me a proper little mongrel. I love being different (not white) here. I think the train thing happens more to 'big and scary' foreign men in general. As a girl, the obaasan are more than happy to pratically sit on my lap and strike up conversations. I also seem to be popular with JH/SH/college boys on trains; girls are more reserved :(

The funny thing is, I felt free in Japan. On the rare occasion when I actually encountered problems it had more to do with being non-japanese than being black. If you speak Japanese and present yourself well, it's fairly easy to win most Japanese people over. Making an effort to understand, appreciate, and respect the culture and forge REAL relationships that extend beyond "the club" helped me tremendously.

Racism doesn't necessarily denote "hate." Racism literally means you blatantly or inadvertently think your race is superior you someone else's.
If you think it's cool that people crowd around you because you're black in a club, image how a Japanese person feels when everyone overseas assumes he/she knows karate or only eats sushi. Something I've noticed in Japan regarding blacks is a sort of generalized respect for their "coolness." Perhaps a lack of cultural awareness of different cultures makes them more comfortable with stereotyping, but they often bring blacks into their concept of "black culture," which is essentially hip-hop culture.
As for the Africans, most of themn belong to a subset of people who come for business or are touts for clubs. That subset is usually a pretty aggressive lot.

I believe you're right about the whole in and out thing; I lived in japan for 4 years when my dad was stationed there and it seemed like it didn't matter with who they alienated if you were a Gaijin. If anything, they like black people more than us haha. What they really hate is us Gaijin guys because we or it seems like we have an advantage over the natives with women; another thing is if you don't speak their language. But for the most part all the Japanese I've met have been super nice.

you should read about this legendary figure known as Yasuke, he was an African(from the Congo I think) servant of an Italian Jesuit who travel to japan in the late 1500s, he spoke Italian and Japanese pretty well. During his tenure there, he became close friends with the warlord Oda Nobunaga, who was impressed by his strength and knowledge of the language, they talked together alot(or so the legend) Nobunaga even took him on as a student in swordsmanship and made him a body guard....

however there is debate whehter it actully happened due to the fact that there is no record of Yasuke after the death of Nobunaga(killed by a rival) but the legend does state that after being defeated in the seige against nobunaga's daughter and retainer(whom yasuke fought alongside, and fought well or so the legend goes), instead of killing him, they sent him to the church of the jessuits who took him home. no mention of him in western history, becuz, blacks didnt matter that much back then.

I agree with you. There isn't really racism towards any specific skin colour. My grandparents are white American and German, black Caribbean and Indian which makes me a proper little mongrel. I love being different (not white) here. I think the train thing happens more to 'big and scary' foreign men in general. The funny thing is, I felt free in Japan. On the rare occasion when I actually encountered problems it had more to do with being non-japanese than being black. If you speak Japanese and present yourself well, it's fairly easy to win most Japanese people over. Making an effort to understand, appreciate, and respect the culture and forge REAL relationships that extend beyond "the club" helped me tremendously.

@note156 Well, first of all, you may think it's "ignorant" however I made that clear to begin with. My logic is fact based. Japan is 90 to 95% Japanese. If you are from a different nationality (especially a darker skin colour) you will stand out. That's a fact. That's not racist. My friends family, who are black, were there on business for 10yrs. The father, while he and his family attended baseball games were told "go home yankee".Why would anyone want to visit a place when you're not welcome

If you take a photo with 10 people 9 white and 1 black who will stand out? People must be comfortable in their surroundings. He seems to be and I'm not faulting him for that.
