this is great! i haven't read this story & probably won't til after the movie. i want to go in absoutely cold (other than trailers). anyways, great job!
Well, pretty damn close to the plot of Lovecraft´s masterpiece. I hope all of you will join me in hoping that Guillermo del Toro will actualy succeed in directing At the Mountains of Madness :)
Y'know, one wonders how Miskatonic University gets new staff.
"So, how did the position become vacant?"
"Oh, the previous professor went on an expedition and was the only survivor. He's in an Asylum, raving at the padded walls about the awakening of horrible terrors from before the dawn of time. So, when can you start?"
NIcely done fake trailer almost had me for a bit. For fellow Lovecraft fans I'd suggest checking out either "the call of cthulhu" an indie flick by the H P Lovecraft historical society which was brilliantly done or The Dream Quest to Unknown Kadath (imagine Lovecraft done with reading rainbow style animation) also well done. Both were very faithful to the original tales.
It's brilliant. When will the film be made? I'm teaching a course on Lovecraft this spring at a certain college in New England. Would you like to come and tell us about your film?
Espectacular, muy bueno el trailer, espero haga mas trailer de peliculas ficticias, que espero Hollywood nunca las haga porque arruinaria sus grandiosas historias, como ya hizo con Dragon Ball o Street Fighter.
Is there any way we'll be able to see this movie? I thought Universal scrapped it or something ... well if this ever does come out I'm definitely first in line to see it :D
I saw this many year ago but I always come back to see this, I so love this clip it's amazing how well captivates the lovecraft cosmology, this is how a film about any lovecraft tale should be produce.
Imdb says Universal cancelled the project because Del Toro wouldn't let go of an "R" rating.
Del Toro's absolutely wonderful artistic vision would have made this film one of the best, if not "The Best", horror film we've seen in awhile!
Universal studio exec's were too worried about catering to demographics or whatever the hell they do. Too worried about making the most amount of money possible....
wow...i really thought it was a real trailer until i read the comments. unfortunatedly im sure Del Toro wont make it as similar to the book. probably show monsters around and a lot of cool special effects for it to be a cool film, but not for a lovecraft fan.
This is great. I want to see this movie! But seriously, I kept thinking while watching: "This is what del Toro's movie would be like!" I think you captured it beautifully, and amazingly well. Fine, fine editing. And I'm sure the 'first trailers' to come out on it would hide the fact that there are monsters, because with Tom Cruise, the studio would be going after the big, mainstream audience for such an expensive film. Again, superb job!
I can't wait til they turn the Cthulu mythos into a film series hopefully they read the stories and will hopefully do it right. It would be awesome to see The Great Old Ones coming at you in 3d ya know. But, sadly that probably won't happen for the longest time because people suck
a vary good fake. just replace the actors with who ever is in the real film, change the buildings to have the alien's "impossible geometry"(am I the only one that thinks of M.C. Esher when I hear that term?) and this could work for the final film.
This is an extremely clever "fake trailer" which could not only stand in for the real thing, but spark anybody's interest for Lovecraft's masterpiece of horror.
For those of you who have read the story... any guess as to what Danforth saw at the end that finally drove him insane? What was behind the mountains that the Elder Things feared?...
very good trailer! I read some news about this movie, G del Toro could be the director but the produsction and filming have to be still agreed. If they do I hope heartly it'll be closer to original.

stupid. H.P. Lovecraft movie renditions are such bull shit, because it would be physically impossible to recreate any of the creatures he creates. Either they're so inhuman that there aren't human words that could possibly describe them, are at the sight of one you would instantly die. It's useless trying recreate something that can't be described.
Great trailer. I just finished the story and this captures the mood of it pretty well. I'm just curious what movies you spliced together (besides King Kong)
@TheMutantlizard There was going to be an actual movie by Duillermo del Toro which was going to be produced by James Cameron but it apparently fell through reciently.
Oh my god .... for the 1st one and a half minute I believed that this was real. Usually you can tell straight away due to credits or images from well know movies ... but until the monster attack scene it was excellent. Well done. A great effort.
Unfortunately Universal Pictures has canceled the Guillermo Del Toro version of this book for now at least. Universal won't take the risk. It was the budget of $150 million and the insistence on creating an R rated film that made Universal hesitant. "The film is more horror than action adventure and i’m told it would have to generate $500 million in worldwide grosses for the studio to earn its money back."

apparently the movie is on its way but they havnt even cast it yet but i think Ron Pearlman is going to be in it - look up hellboy 3 for an interview with the guy who plays abe-sapien.
Whoa! I really thought this was an acutal trailer. I was about to google the movie but then I recognized the castle from Van Hellsing. which movies did you used? they really have the book air.
@Propnomicon have & read the script several months ago. It's real, though they changed it quite a bit. Will be interesting to see it adapted to the screen.
@sargathan The maker of this video used pieces of existing movies and cut it together to make a faux trailer. At the beginning there is footage from Peter Jackson's King Kong and from The Phantom.
cannot think of a better director to deal with this material. Though I like HPL he is FLAWED-due to fear to accept his own psyche and mythos-and he can be verbose to the point of obfuscation! But there are occasional glimpses of real genius-and to my mind MOUNTAINS is his best-real existential horror that hits the roots of our being-and it needs an artist with a serious understanding of horror and art (dare I say MAGICK?) to pull it off- heres to Mr del Toro!
Really nice trailer. Would make me want to see the film.
As it'll be another two years, at least, before the film hits theaters you may be tempted to do another trailer on this. I'd only suggest rethinking your choice of Copperplate Gothic as the typeface. To me it is not especially evocative of the mood or subject matter. I see you want a face that is thick enough to allow an ice treatment, but there are other faces you could go with that would have more oomph than this one. Just a suggestion.
@Propnomicon Hate to admit it - gorgeous trailer full of impending doom - and I was distracted by the typeface. It was fine at first - for the stuffy academics in their creaky wooden hall - but it needs to creep out. Wrinkle, bend, twist, struggle, melt, an eye opens in a letter, then another, then - tentacles ....
This is an excellent trailer. I would go to see a movie based on this trailer, especially knowing it was based on a Lovecraft book. I would hope that it was as faithful to the story as possible, although I realize that movies often have to differ slightly from the books on which they are based in order to be more interesting to audiences.
sorry, but fuck this shit. h.p. lovecrafts stuff cant be converted to the big screen this is bullshit. needs to stay on the paper like its meant to be
It seems like they're not being very faithful to the book. I saw no block-like buildings in that trailer. And it seems like they are going to portray the Old Ones as monsters. I think they are going to ruin this.
@shadowhunter144 You are aware that this isn't the actual trailer right? Those were scenes from Mary Shelly's Frankestien, the first Hellboy I think, Sky Captain, and a number of other films of which origin I'm uncertain of. The creator did a decent job though I thought. But yes, the actual movie is being heavily changed from the original story.
The story is so great, when they make the real movie, they'd better do it faithfully otherwise it will end up the same as the movie adaptation of Beowulf.
I dont understand this...whrere the hell did you get the film material when the film was not even produced yet?...i mean they want to start making the movie in 2011 and you've got perfect scenes...FTW?!?!
Do you really believe all leaks on the internet? I trust del Toro with my heart and soul to do the absolute best silver screen version of the novella. Hopefully, he will. His credentials are just overwhelming, and I believe he is by far the best director to come out in the past 20 years.
Are you serious? They actually are turning it into a prequel to the thing? That is awful, it shames Lovecraft's amazing work. I thought Guillermo knew better
Director Guillermo del Toro and screenwriter Matthew Robbins wrote a screenplay based on Lovecraft's story, but in 2006 had trouble getting Warner Bros. to finance the project. Del Toro wrote, "The studio is very nervous about the cost and it not having a love story or a happy ending, but it's impossible to do either in the Lovecraft universe."[19] In July 2010 it was announced that the project would be made in 3D with James Cameron as producer.
Well, I suppose it's easier to fool people who haven't actually read the book but you really had me going there until I noticed the difference in film quality. Nicely done though and I quite enjoyed it. :D
@Propnomicon Thanks! Seriously, brilliant. I don't care if the starheaded ones have no teeth, or even Shogghoth. Thatscene from the Cave fit right in...
Lovecraft is one of my favourite authors , and you initially had me going about this trailer being an official movie release .......idiot i am.........:)
That aside - good effort , and i await the movie being released , hopefully directed by Del Toro
The little tiny bridge spanning the huge chasm is stupid. The idea that the Shuggoth has teeth is stupid. The need to use footage other than the actual mountains of the antarctic is stupid. It looks "over-produced" full of ridiculous exaggeration, when in fact I think a great deal more understatement leading to spectacle would suit the story, for otherwise, Madness is just someone screaming and shaking their head: stupid. I think I will cry now.
beautiful trailer, but i would have really liked to see one or two of their big clunky airplanes they brought with them, flying or parked on the ice - that was a big trademark of that book for me ... and the huge silent penguins wandering around too
this is one of his books that im happy they havent made into a film yet - when they do, i really hope they do it faithfully and with a big budget and good actors ... great trailer!
@pynipple I've liked Guillermo del Toro's work, but the leaked script is...less than faithful to the story. I understand the need to "adapt" the written word to film, but there's a major subplot added to the script that turns it into prequel to "The Thing".
@Propnomicon I love H.P Lovercraft's work and that's why i feared something like this would happen. Way too often great books get mauled by hollywood, that said ill probably watch it.
@pynipple If you liked the atmosphere of the book, listen to this song here: watch?v=FFv49OBVyCg (Polar Expedition), it catches the atmosphere of the cold, deadly and mysterious place pretty good.

@sargathan The maker of this video used pieces of existing movies and cut it together to make a faux trailer. At the beginning there is footage from Peter Jackson's King Kong and from The Phantom.

Maybe we just want to celebrate the book, and Lovecraft in general.

If only they would make a faithful adaption of Lovecraft's works

I'm not normally a fan of faux-trailers. But thumbs up for great editing and emotive pacing. Better than some real trailers I've seen.

cannot think of a better director to deal with this material.

Ellimir 1 year ago
@Ellimir Aye, the typography is more than a bit wiggy. I'll definitely be changing that when I get around to upgrading, so to speak.
Propnomicon 1 year ago
@Propnomicon Hate to admit it - gorgeous trailer full of impending doom - and I was distracted by the typeface. It was fine at first - for the stuffy academics in their creaky wooden hall - but it needs to creep out. Wrinkle, bend, twist, struggle, melt, an eye opens in a letter, then another, then - tentacles ....

This is an excellent trailer. I would go to see a movie based on this trailer, especially knowing it was based on a Lovecraft book. I would hope that it was as faithful to the story as possible, although I realize that movies often have to differ slightly from the books on which they are based in order to be more interesting to audiences.

mamaluigito 1 year ago
It seems like they're not being very faithful to the book. I saw no block-like buildings in that trailer. And it seems like they are going to portray the Old Ones as monsters. I think they are going to ruin this.
shadowhunter144 1 year ago
@shadowhunter144 You are aware that this isn't the actual trailer right? Those were scenes from Mary Shelly's Frankestien, the first Hellboy I think, Sky Captain, and a number of other films of which origin I'm uncertain of. The creator did a decent job though I thought. But yes, the actual movie is being heavily changed from the original story.
CarbonBasedAndroid 1 year ago
The story is so great, when they make the real movie, they'd better do it faithfully otherwise it will end up the same as the movie adaptation of Beowulf.

Do you really believe all leaks on the internet? I trust del Toro with my heart and soul to do the absolute best silver screen version of the novella. Hopefully, he will. His credentials are just overwhelming, and I believe he is by far the best director to come out in the past 20 years.

gunnars12 1 year ago
Are you serious? They actually are turning it into a prequel to the thing? That is awful, it shames Lovecraft's amazing work. I thought Guillermo knew better
Danman429 1 year ago
Director Guillermo del Toro and screenwriter Matthew Robbins wrote a screenplay based on Lovecraft's story, but in 2006 had trouble getting Warner Bros. to finance the project. Del Toro wrote, "The studio is very nervous about the cost and it not having a love story or a happy ending, but it's impossible to do either in the Lovecraft universe."[19] In July 2010 it was announced that the project would be made in 3D with James Cameron as producer.

@johnnyharadrim A slightly edited version of the "Miraz Crowned" track from the "Prince Caspian" soundtrack.
Propnomicon 1 year ago
@Propnomicon Thanks! Seriously, brilliant. I don't care if the starheaded ones have no teeth, or even Shogghoth. Thatscene from the Cave fit right in...
johnnyharadrim 1 year ago
Lovecraft is one of my favourite authors , and you initially had me going about this trailer being an official movie release .......idiot i am.........:)
That aside - good effort , and i await the movie being released , hopefully directed by Del Toro
volitionlocked 1 year ago
The little tiny bridge spanning the huge chasm is stupid. The idea that the Shuggoth has teeth is stupid. The need to use footage other than the actual mountains of the antarctic is stupid. It looks "over-produced" full of ridiculous exaggeration, when in fact I think a great deal more understatement leading to spectacle would suit the story, for otherwise, Madness is just someone screaming and shaking their head: stupid. I think I will cry now.
Divinezoo 1 year ago
beautiful trailer, but i would have really liked to see one or two of their big clunky airplanes they brought with them, flying or parked on the ice - that was a big trademark of that book for me ... and the huge silent penguins wandering around too
this is one of his books that im happy they havent made into a film yet - when they do, i really hope they do it faithfully and with a big budget and good actors ... great trailer!
pynipple 1 year ago 28
@pynipple I've liked Guillermo del Toro's work, but the leaked script is...less than faithful to the story. I understand the need to "adapt" the written word to film, but there's a major subplot added to the script that turns it into prequel to "The Thing".
I really, really hope that changes.
Propnomicon 1 year ago 4
@Propnomicon Del Toro said he has changed it a lot since then
onelastcall386 1 year ago
@Propnomicon I love H.P Lovercraft's work and that's why i feared something like this would happen. Way too often great books get mauled by hollywood, that said ill probably watch it.
