Framework is the same used for NeXTStep (aka later OpenStep) => Darwin, based on the Unix BSD system. API's are mostly still Mac Classic. Some other elements in the UI such as the widgets and browsing have been carried over from NeXT.
Historically they are "nice" machines. At the time they were revolutionary in concept, design and technology, and the operating system, nextstep, way ahead of its time (framework for OS/X). Aside from that, they were more than well built. In short, they are truly sweet machines.
Yeah well, the current implementation of OSX looks more high tech and has more "eye candy" suggesting that it may have a substantially different API than NEXTSTEP
You forgot olivety and okidata machines, but then again, they are built in europe.
