I just watched this film for the first time. It's a plodding affair and is far too often disjointed. Taking in all the hodge-podge of over-long wedding scenes, Robert De Niro running down the street in his birthday suit for no apparent reason, clumsy drunks swearing and knocking over stuff, and even a guy getting stuck in a bowling pinsetter for comic relief, what you are actually seeing is a terrible movie.

Oh yeah. There's Russian roulette in it - an easy way to make tense scenes.

Michael Cimino filmed half the film before the war to show you what the characters are like and by the end of the film they were completely different to how we first saw them. If you can't understand that just they try to remember how good the actors were.

A truly great film but other than the violence it was quite sad in many ways.

John Cazale who played Stanley (also played Fredo in the God Father) was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer shortly before filming began. They filmed his scenes first but died before the film was finished, he was just 42 years old. He was engaged to Meryl Streep at the time so there was real genuine emotion within the filming.
