Fantastic song. I bought this album when it came out just to listen to this song.
Andy Williams played the Albert Hall promoting "Solitaire" when it came out and I went just to hear him perform this live. Of course, he sang it perfectly because he has a great voice. He's a bit scary-looking now though because he's had so much plastic surgery.
Lovely, lovely song. The lyrics are so perfect and descriptive. His voice lends itself perfectly to this song. This is a wonderful song. The music is very compelling. He is singing this song from his heart no doubt about that. Thank you for this beautiful post.
Now then, we're all in accord here I think. This was always my favourite track from the 'Solitaire' album - quite an achievement when you consider just how good the title track was (still is). I used to play my parents copy of 'Solitaire' and crank up the volume for this - check out the wonderful, sympathetic strings that accompany the chorus - great production by Richard Perry. Why was this not huge? Checkout the B side 'Remember' which is not the same mix as on the album. Thanks for loading.
Been looking for this song for the past 35 years. Just couldn't remember the title. This is indeed a very lovely song. Have never understood why this didn't do better in the charts and not better known.
The "Solitaire" album was Andy's serious foray into a soft-rock sensibility. It was produced by Richard Perry, who gathered top L.A. studio rock players like Nicky Hopkins, Klaus Voorman, and Jim Keltner. I had a chance to talk with Andy about this album, and he recalled how Perry wanted him to nail the syncopated rhythms of the melody of "Getting Over You" exactly, in the style of a rock ballad than a traditional pop ballad.
@ben2715 A lot of the session players were the same ones on albums Perry was producing at the time for Ringo Starr, Carly Simon, and Barbra Streisand. It's a shame he wasn't able to bring that success to Andy here in the States, where the "Solitaire" album and single merely grazed the charts and "Getting Over You" was never released as a single.
Still sounds as good today as it did in '73, when this first appeared on his "Solitaire" album. Only got to number 35 in '74,shocking underated song, should have been top 5. Pax to all from Ian Smith.Xxx.
@Mr1973ian Still remember riding round Coney Hatch grounds in Friern Barnet on the back my mate Mick Clarke's moped and then going into their clubhouse and putting this on their 10p jukebox.Must have been spring '74 oh happy days.Pax to all from 73soulboy.Xxx.
Although this charted in '74 I just knew it was recorded in '73, the best year of pop music! Top stuff from the king of smooth. Pax to all from Ian Smith. Xxx.
Could not have said it better, gazzymodo. I love this song! Easily my favourite of Andy's great songs (although he does an incredible version of 'Last Tango In Paris)
"Getting over you" written by Tony Hazzard. One of the finest ( though not too well known ) performances Andy ever commited to wax. A theme of lost love, a man trying to convince himself all is ok since she went away, but failing hopelessly... A beautiful vocal performance. The song has an unusual structure: verse, verse, chorus, inst brk, chorus. My own personal favourite song by Andy Williams.
@gazzymodo. I agree. I'm an Andy Williams fan, and although I like some of his well known songs, I have never understood why this one failed to do better in the charts and is not better known. A great vocal performance, and more "soul" or feeling than in some of his other songs.
Is there any song that Andy cannot sing? Get well soon.
