How radical this must have sounded in '33. FDR comes into office in the midst of mass unemployment, terrible hardships etc, and says to the country, "Don't Be Afraid." It sure would be nice to hear it again.
I wonder what FDR would think with both the Democrats and Republicans using constant fear to control their political base. I've seen videos on youtube from political groups that warn against other groups using fear tactics, while their own video and comments are full of fear mongering and hate speech. I hope people are teaching their children to use objective reasoning and to think for themselves or we'll be a country of phobias and anxiety instead of free thinking Americans.
FDR had it right. He KNEW what the people needed, and acted quickly upon it. The politicking of TODAY is rife with partisianship battles, halting ANY chance of improvements in our society and the old "American Dream". I cannot believe that we continue down this path, and to be honest, I am fearful.
People used to talk about how sex was driving our economy...all the ads you saw on TV, in magazine, print, etc were filled with seductive women and virile men. Ad men knew desire for sex was a powerful emotion that could compel someone to do something...namely, buy. Now, ad men have discovered the power of fear. It's what makes news profitable nowadays, and it will sell everything from organic food and bottled water, to cars, to medical care.
wow FDR was the man!! What a great speech there! We need more people like FDR! I miss this guy! He's so right, the only thing we have to fear, is fear it's self!!
@prede89 Yea (= I'm more of a republican but this really touches the heart, brings back the times when speeches were from the heart instead of being written to make politicians look good.

FDR: "The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself."
Man 1: "And spiders!"
FDR: "Yes, and spiders"
Man 2: "And snakes!"
FDR "Yes...snakes too."
Man 3 "And don't forget about werewolves!"
FDR "There's NO SUCH THING!"
*everyone argues*
I'm sorry, it had to be put up.
