I think it's the arrangement/performance. Sean's version has a little more drive, a more prominent beat, probably due to the accompaniment. Luke has a more passionate, warmer approach which comes off a little calmer. My theory, both are great, I think Luke is the superior vocalist though.
I wished i was half te man Luke was when he sang this :) (and i'm dutch so plz 4give me for my language if you don't know what the H i'm talking about ;)
There is lovely slow version of this song sung by Jim Reid with the the Foundry Bar Band. Can any kind poster oblige?.I haven't heard it for years and would love to hear it again.
On this wounderful sunny spring morning only Luke can lift my heart into the clear morning air, dancing, swirling with happy warm joy. Rest In Peace, with the god that wanted you back to soon.
IMO We should respect the wonderful Luke Kelly's memory as the great singer he was...and respect Sean as the great singer he still is. Luke is my favourite singer of all time but I can still enjoy others too.
@TheLordOden Both renditions are beaut, tho' while Sean performs and executes a song, Luke emits the greater passion but simply singing to his heart's delight and his vocal sound is more resonant and not at all stilted. Both have the Irish lilt which is lovely, yet Luke's sound is warmer, perhaps for its lower tone.

@opaldove I agree with that.
