  • TOO fast, no explanation AT ALL. Why not just play the damn tune and put a picture on johnmayer instead of your video!? I'd learn more that way!

  • your guitar.....so flat

  • Would this sound right if it was played on a classical guitar (nylon strings) ?

  • thx man was nice one

  • Wayy to fast mate

  • If you need help with the tuning, I tuned down to DADEAD and then just capo'd up to get the same sound. No broken strings! :D

  • OHHHHHHH IT'S TUNED DIFFERENTLY...

  • If anyone needs help with tuning.

Just get the E string right. Then go 7th fret to get the B string. Then 5th fret on the newly tuned B string to get another E for the string below. Then on that E string, 2nd fret for the string below. Then 5th fret for the string below that. And 5th fret again. Bam!

  • Great video! Thanks for the tutorial :)

  • Iplayguitar420

  • You look like... that guy from Dawnson Creek.

  • nope it's the same as the tuning for somethin's missin' EBEF#Be

  • Dude I think you meant that the tuning is E B F# E B E... noat E B E F# B E

  • Occasionally, you sound like lemony snicket XP

  • good job man

  • how do you downtune half a step for the G i cant get it bro, i got the a A annd D string down, if you could just tell me what fret it is on the d string it would be easy

  • Comment removed

  • I'm going mad by the tune.I can't fucking get my guitar tuned.I honestly have no idea how to tune my guitar to E major or whatever this guy says.help please. :d

  • @MrShiningbubblegum Don't go crazy - just tune your A string to the 7th fret of your low E, so it'll then be a B. Then tune your D string to the 5th fret of your newly tuned A string. Tune your G string down a half step. Then don't mess with your two high strings.

  • @swingfire19 thankssss! omg I'm breathing a HUGE sigh of relief.Finally..thanx again and again bro :)

  • @swingfire19 i have an electric tuner, is there any mode to set that at for me to find this tuning, because im finding it really difficult to find the tune by ear,, the tutorial looks great by the way bro.

  • @mark9314 is it a chromatic tuner? get a korg pitch black tuner.. it'll tell what key you are in.. very easy to use..

  • Comment removed

  • @MrShiningbubblegum or just google online guitar tuner and choose Open E tunning ;)

  • My Martin OOOM sounds way better than that

  • thank you for going over the tuning. that was my whole problem reading my tablature. Thanks bro. ps tuning doesnt really matter to me because ur teaching the music.. not performing.

  • slighlty out of tune is an understatement

  • Dude,you're awesome ;P I wish I could play that. ;)

  • It sounds like a triplet if that helps you identify which part I'm talking about??

  • Please tell me.... WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING AT THE BEGINNING RIGHT WHEN YOU HAMMER ON THE LOW E?!?! The first time sounds different than the rest when you play it, your adding something... PLEASE HELP??

  • lame slacker tune the guitar first!

  • respect ! :(

i wish i could do it like this

  • you're really confusing

  • that fucking tuning is driving me nutzz

    what is the tuning called??????

  • My hands are too small to play this song!

  • I don't understand how you are picking your harmonics from 00:44 to 1:07

I mean you start off by picking F# B E but then from there it seems like you are just hitting the harmonics without picking it? You also fail to mention what you are playing between open E and the harmonics when you play it full speed.

  • you are the dude from brain pop

  • thank you so much man, you're a lot of help. this song sounds so cool. i'm glad you helped me learn it

  • haha love the poser at the end in the background on the reflection of the glass

  • PLEASE DO THIS AGain BUT ACRTUALLY EXPLAIN WHAT UR DOING

  • Hey man :)

Thank you so much for posting this..it helped !!

    But..there is one little thing..

It goes too fast.. You tell more like the most important lines and you're skipping the little tiny notes and stuff..

Could you please post another video where you show us how to play it as good as you??

    Thank you!!!

  • which strings do you use? and which size? please answer me soon, cuz I'm going to cover this song with a friend next week.

  • @RockeyRupert I usually use elixers, light size. but it shouldn't matter that much I don't think.

  • @swingfire19

I use extra light or custom light gauge and i've snapped my third d string for this song.. any idea what kind i should be using here?

  • WTF TUT WITH WRONG TUNING? FAIL!!!! FUCKING MORON!!!

  • @NelsonHeightz

    It's the right tuning?

    What are you talking about?

    It's (low-to-high): E-B-E-F#-B-E

  • tuning?

  • Could you please tell very slowly which notes are you using.. I mean the frets.. and please a little slower, because all of us know little to play it.. We'll practice it.. we love the way you tell us.. but please go very very slow... take 10 minutes to give a good lesson.. you play really good. thanks you told about the right tuning because everyone else told it's on Open B. n it wasn't sounding very good on that

Please please please post a video doing very slow in that and explain more!

    thnx

  • love it love it love it!!! thanks :D

  • How do you play the harmonics?

  • @TheJenniReid Thats what im trying to figure out...

  • @SuperChance17 It's the only part I'm confused with. I don't know how to play it. But he's helped me sooo much.

  • @TheJenniReid ive been messing around with it and i think youre supposed to palm mute the part on the 12th fret that he calls harmonics

  • @SuperChance17 No, I don't think so

  • Why would the strings break if it's tuned to E? I just did it, and I really don't want to break my strings :l

  • Why do all the songs that are cool to play in all sorts of different tunings :S

i dont want to be tuning all the time to play a cool song lol haha :P

  • PLEASE PLEASE go through it again but explain much slower and more detailedly please this is my favorite song and i have to be able to play it. you are 100 percent correct btw on how to play it but it was just too fast if u cus please do a slower more indepth version of this turorial please

  • you went way too fast and i couldnt understand what you were doing or saying. but the song is dead on. i just think you need to take it slower and explain in more depth.

  • Hi "swingfire19"! Nice Guitar... I've a Larrivèe Lv-03re! One question: What strings do you use? I use D'addario exp 0.12 bronze! Thank you so much!

  • how do u tune ur guitar that way?

  • I hate when you want to watch a tutorial of something and people just start talking for like 2 mins about all this random shit... just play the freaking song!

  • how is it possible that i tuned how you said and sounds like totally different?

    E B E F# B E

  • hey man i love the video... how do you tune the guitar to F# ???

  • GREAT THANKS!

  • I could have never learnt this song looking at tabs and listening by ear. Your awsome. picked it up in 2 minutes.

  • you went too fast... i couldnt tell what you did at all

  • @KingFoggia Rewind.

  • @KingFoggia Seriously, the tab helps, but if you could please slow it down not by note on the hammer ons.

  • I found a way to tune it easier for people who don't want to break strings Tune your guitar to DADGAD and put a capo on the 2nd fret. Makes life easier.

Good lesson btw. Learned pretty quickly.

  • @CoolAsMel this is genius lol thanks~!

  • @CoolAsMel shit man didn't even think of that! good idea!

  • @CoolAsMel It's not actually quite DADGAD, it's DADEAD. Tune to DADGAD and drop the G three semitones, so it's in tune with second fret on the D string below.

  • @CoolAsMel but only the intro sounds good with that.

the next part doesnt sound anything like it

"i dont know what its like to..." that part

  • @CoolAsMel If I tune it like that when he says to play the first note on the 5th fret would that then mean I play it on the 7th fret?

  • Tip: Tuning up an acoustic guitar will break your strings and mess your neck up. Soooo... do this: tune d-a-df-#-a-d and put a capo on 2. Do the same frets relative to the capo.

  • for some reason this video dosnt really help at all

  • wayy tooo fast. cudnt tell what you were picking

  • @morebigcox 100% correct though

  • how do i tune my guitar like that

  • I'm pretty sure your higher strings are out of tune, but very good tutorial anyways. It helped a lot! :)

Hey, can you tell me more about your guitar? I was actually thinking of getting a Larrivee. Hows the action and neck feel? How does the bass and treble notes resonate? How would you describe the sound? Thanks!

  • Cheers, thanks for that- Really helpful. Thought I had tuning not quite right. I went up to G# on the G instead of down to F#! Thanks!!

  • thank you

  • u dnt really show it that wel.....

  • nice to see another larrivee covering mayer!

  • is it safe to tune to the E?

  • @7TheBest7ManU No. I break strings a little less than half the time I play this song. So do it when your strings are old and want an excuse to replace them, or do it immediately with new strings and then tune them back to normal before too long.

  • @swingfire19 ? if you play hard you breake the string if you twist it right nothing will happen, always tune it back to c/ a as normalt ppl know a piano and a guitar plays in C.

  • @swingfire19 i have a 3000 dollar taylor. Limited Edition and i still feel like my strings will break. but i wanna play thins song so bad!!!!

  • @7TheBest7ManU no. i broke my string

  • @7TheBest7ManU u gotta have a good quality guitar!!! if its like a fake brand guitar itll be easier than with a real gibson taylor or martin

  • hey are u sure about the 1st hammer on? i feel like he's holding the A (B) string on the 5th fret with his thumb and hammering on the 7th of the A (B) string. idk i hav the dvd but cant get a clear enough picture to tell but it keeps buggin me, thought maybe someone with a better ear could confirm or deny that. thanks man

  • @awv2882 I am pretty positive.

  • Nice job! I[ve just figured out how to play this song and I was watching some videos to see if mine version was worth sharing. I think we got it correct.

  • Thank you. happy i can play nw. U shuld try the whole chorus

  • @csioux7 Check part 2

  • Thank you!!!!!! Hgs from brazil!! \o/

  • wow, heh. Learned this easily. Thanks :)

  • Nice work! and ty, saved me a lot of time!

  • hey dude, can you please tell me the tuning again?

  • you honestly can't rewind....you need someone to tell you. nice

  • Good job...btw, your guitar a lil out of tune...

  • Comment removed

  • Tuning* Sorry.. haha

  • Nice vid. I'm guessing you were cracking up at the person who was looking at you in front of you? You could see the reflection in the window haha.

  • Thanks, that helped! :)

  • Hey what strings did you use for it to not break when you tune up the A and D string? My D string always breaks after 3-4 plays of the song. =(

  • So do mine, and I would assume so do John Mayer's. It's just what happens. That's why I only play this one once in a while.

  • mine havent.. ive played it a billion times without them breaking...

  • Lucky you.

  • dont know how to thank you.. but thank you so much anyway. may the god of rock and acoustic blessed you......

  • helped alot ,

  • Wow, that was really helpful, dude! Thanks :D

  • how do you make hammer ons louder?

  • @indiemuse81

    fingermuscles

  • @houtn

    finger dont have muscles XD

but i know what you mean

  • sure they do? If there isn't there is a muscle attached to the "strings" leading (to) the fingers :) - Or else they couldn't move

  • how can i tune it according to that? without the aid of a tuner.

  • could u tell me if you can play this song on standard tuning? the reason is that i make some small concerts and i want to include this song in, but i dont have the time to tune the guitar differently :S

  • no, you really can't... unless you bring two guitars that could be difficult. sorry

  • THANK YOU!!! just a quick question though...how do you make the F# B and E strings ring like that?

  • you mean the harmonics?

  • yup. I've tried but it just doesn't ring.

  • make sure your finger is over the fret wire itsself on the 12th fret. then barely touch the strings and just strum it

  • oh....ok. thanks!

  • thank you sooo much!!!!!!!!!111

  • Thank you for posting this.... Some of the tabs online are so bad... And not at all accurate. This makes it so much more clear and just makes so much sense. So ya, thanks dude!

  • Hmm. I started playing this summer, so like 6 months ago. I have no idea how to change the sound of the strings, any ideas? How to tune it that is

  • the...tuners

  • How about a tutorial for the outro?? That definitely completes the song. I know it's not on part two...maybe throw it up on your UG tab. Thanks for the lesson though, Once I heard this song, I was just dying to learn it!

  • Hey, it´s tabbed out in the info section of Part II, and it´s in the comments of the UG tabs

  • awesome! :D

  • omg thank you u made it soooo much easier for me to play "in your atmosphere" but is there a easier way to play "wherever you go" or am i making it harder then it looks?

  • THanks man!! I love playing this song now that I can lol

  • thankkkkkkkkkkk you!!

  • You should look into getting some meduim/heavy strings. I made the switch because i love playing this kind of music and it really gives it a more full, deeper, warmer sound and less of a twangy sound.

I saw you bend the shit out of that 3rd string, thats what made me notice.

nice tutorial. once you learn how to play it it is a lot of fun, and with that tuning you can find a lot of other chords.

  • wait so just to be sure i tune my e and a strings up a WHOLE step? i really dont want to break a string

  • no, your A and D strings, and yeah a whole step. if your strings are old one will probably break... I've lost a lot. it sucks.

  • ok thanks i did it and it didn't break surprisingly. thanks for the great lesson and especially the tab!

  • thank you so much man, this made it soo much simpler :)

  • Thank you so much!!!

  • thanks much dude, perfect, learned it in a few minutes, awesome about the hammer ons and pull offs, i just hope my strings survive as usual cos i've popped strings before cos of the strange tuning, esp. the D string tuned to E.

  • F-ing brilliant. I usually watch about a dozen different tutorials on any given song and try to patch sections together, because everyone seems to get a little something right and a whole lot of something wrong. You, my friend, nailed this song to the wall! You've got a metric ton of talent... really looking forward to future (hopefully Mayer) tutorials.

  • Hey man good video! Although listening to the song I think your first hammer on on the D-string (tuned to E) is wrong. I'm fairly certain that even tho you hit the open D (E) first, you still hammer on to the A-string (tuned to B) on the 7th fret. Or just do 5h7 on the A (B) string. Could just be me tho. This song is still giving me trouble!

  • great video man!

  • Thanks bro so much for both part I and part II. Helped so much!!!

  • This sounds kinda out of tune, but great video

  • It is. I've been meaning to redo it

  • how the helll do i tune this

  • he tells you ya dummy

  • like visually dumbass

  • i second that.

  • high e=e (no change)

    B=B (no change)

G=F# (2nd fret on the newly tuned E string)

D=E (5th fret on the newly tuned B string)

    A=B (7th fret on low E)

    low E=E (no change)

  • Comment removed

  • Could you show "No such thing" or "Clarity"? Tks, bro

  • THANK YOU!

I've been looking for some help learning this song and you are the only person so far who knows what the hell they are doing. well done man :)

  • hey dude

could you do a video for his song 'Man on the Side'?

It's on Any Given Thursday, and you're like the only person I've seen on youtube who teaches it properly

  • I'd have to learn it myself, first

  • Hey that is extremely helpful in understanding whats going on. Nicely done.

    dc

  • can you explain *picking patterns* with more annotation?

I got the just of it - its pretty obvious - but you dont share how you are picking, or what strings you are picking during the lesson.

    thanks-

    //andy costello

  • i'm probably going to re-do this at some point. i don't have time at the moment though. in the meantime, maybe the tabs will help? they're in the video description

  • okay, i got it down now.

    thanks-

    //andy costello

  • incredible work! you're amazing and thanks for sharing.

  • dude your guitar is out of tune or your tuned down a half step

  • sorry, but... false. listen to the song.

  • actually hes right... listen to john play it... its in E.. and your a half step down.. i tried playing along with you but couldn't take it because you don't know how to tune a guitar... but i can play along with john mayer just fine... so.. tune it up..

  • After listening to it again, I see what you mean. It might be an eighth step off. I'm sorry that my guitar was ever so slightly out of tune while I voluntarily showed you the right way to play a song. Have a great day!

  • exactly.. and i wasn't trying to be an ass... it really was out of tune. ..... if your going to post it online, wouldnt it make sense to make sure its tuned first? and i already knew how to play it... but good job, no one else on here can play it right.

  • thank you. i think that this video was something I did without planning, and I had been playing the song all day and didn't check to see if I had gone out, so, my bad. when i have some free time i'll update it, cause now that bothers me too

  • @swingfire19 youre definitely right on as far as the song goes. but what exactly do u do for the "harmonics" on the 12th fret you said. im not sure what to do on that part.

  • thanks man! but my a-string broke as i played it the first time, do i have to take stronger strings to play this?

  • I couldn't tell you how many times I've broken my strings tuning up to or down from this tuning... I guess you kinda just have to deal. I've broken light and heavy gauge strings. It's best if you use brand new strings cause they're strongest. But I usually can't tune to this song more than twice on one set of strings without breaking one.

  • ok :D fine, I`m glad knowing that I´m not the only one breaking his strings and nerves on this song... but thanks!

  • sup bro

  • can u teach us how to play stop this train.. plss..! :D

  • Mine is just a normal tuner, its not a chromatic tuner..so how do i change it to sound like yours?.Do i change the tuner calibration or something?
