  • They should make this the new FF 13-2 theme instead of pop crap :D cheers very touching

  • This is so perfect. It fits Selphie's character PERFECTLY. You should make an extended version.

  • this sounds so beautiful!!! try to add 2 more minutes to it and make it epic!

  • Oh my god. <3 You are brilliant.

  • I always wondered what was that tune and now I have a slight idea. Very cool version, but have you tried doing a version of The Extreme and The Castle of FFVIII?

  • Wow what a novel idea!

  • I've caught myself humming this tune throughout the day.

  • Wow, how good is this! You play the piano very well!

  • I only wish it was longer, even so it's truly beautiful.

  • The fourth line is in the game. During the train journey from Timber to Easy Academy (Galbadia Garden), she sings "Where it stops, no one knows".

  • @leonhart34 oh thanks for letting me know, i had no idea. cool, it seems she only sings that line on that specific train ride? that would be pretty cool and a nice fine nuance at that part. i corrected the lyrics and also credited you, thanks a lot

  • I agree with the piano. Kawaiii :D

  • It's very clever of you to have come up with this idea. You should be very proud.

  • @EmphaticItalic thanks a lot :) i'm happy to hear that people liked the idea.

  • So nice!

  • This is an amazing composition, I want more :P

0:29 when you add that harmony, its like =D beautiful

  • This fits Selphie's character so well! You guys did a good job coming up with the lyrics and your composition is spot on! Always so awesome to come back to your channel and find something I love every time :)

  • @LLDBHB hey thank you, i appreciate it ;) this kind of video had some good responses so i'm thinking of doing more like this in the future, let's see.

  • Three new videos from Verdegrand! :D

This piece is so, sooo beautiful. Once again, great job ^^ <3 I love it.

  • @iBab0 hey thanks :)

  • Ha! So that was it. :) Nice . And now that I know the riddles answer I like the composition even more. Very creative V, I like it. :)

  • @VirtualHarmonies hey thanks, and yep that was it, too bad you weren't around to solve it, you were on a good way in the beginning :)

  • Verdegrand tu assures ;)

  • Thanks for that riddle Verde! You yet again amaze me with all these songs. :)

  • @jmitbitw hey thanks i appreciate it :)

  • Aaaww, I always thought that Selphie is so darn cuuute!

Then again, I cant really think of any FF8 character that is not great either, so yeah.

Nice tune Verdegrand, very inspired and original!

  • no way i could find that! because i did the game in french... why verdegrand, why beeing so cruel??? anyway it's awesome, keep going ^^

  • @gigaganon oh right i forgot that ff8 had european translations :/ well i did one for the japanese version too, perhaps i can do one for the french version as well haha.

  • @Verdegrand nah it was just a lame excuse, even if you did it in french i will never found it, i'm a big fan but i didn't remeber every dialogue, haha

  • How long have you been playing the piano?

  • @XavierK018 hi, it's been about 25 years with a couple of breaks inbetween.

  • AWWW NO FUN!!! I SO HAD THIS AND SOMEONE ALREADY GAVE THE ANSWER!! Lol Selphie was sooooo my favourite character in this game, always checking her boots to see if she'd stepped in something... x)

Anyway this is so AWESOME! It made me warm inside thinking of Selphie singing along to this tune lol <3

  • @GooseberryMk3 haha i am sorry, see that's the thing with youtube, people are from all over the world and so many time zones are mixed, so it's a bit random heh. and thanks, yeah i liked selphie too, she was so cheerful. you gotta check out some of the cosplay vids on youtube, there is one with selphie on a train and it's pretty much spot on haha.

  • *Click on video* Ooh, an FFVIII-related musical riddle. Maybe it's still unsolved!

*See comment saying it's over that was posted 26 seconds ago* Awww

*Browse through comments* Holy smokes that's brilliant!

  • @OparioMcgee heh yeah this was solved quicker than i had imagined it would :) and i'm glad you enjoy this, thanks.

  • thanks for your avid participation, guys, i've enjoyed this a lot and i'll keep looking for more stuff like this so i can whip up more riddles in the future :)

  • Lots of fun. Hoping for more videos!

  • @atomixmax glad you enjoyed it :) it was a lot of fun for me too. i'll be looking around for more stuff like this.

  • All I really did was search up "selphie train" in the search bar, watch the second video, and then the answer popped up in the first few minutes since her dub sounded very much like the piece. So yeah, I cheated.

  • @Phystri yeah you kinda "sniped" the answer haha. you'll get an honorary third place ;p

  • Ha and what made it more of an "ah DUH" moment for me is that I always kept talking to her on the train just to see the lyrics. Also, thanks to this I've bonded with my fellow FFVIII friends/die hards in a 40+ long comment thread after posting this video. It was bugging ALL of us! hahaha

  • @XAnjoJojoX haha nice, yeah this was fun, i'll post more stuff like this if i can think of similar things. hehe i know what you mean with talking to her, for some reason i would expect more lines from her but she would only sing these lines. the japanese lyrics are somewhat extended if i see correctly, the english version has three lines, while the japanese version has four. i'll upload one for the japanese version soon :) but it's very different from this one.

  • @Verdegrand nice! i'll definitely look forward to it =)

  • @XAnjoJojoX Yeah.. You, me both. It was a lot of fun. Great brain training.

  • @captainsunder009 definitely and it will make those moments in the game even more memorable.

  • @XAnjoJojoX (Off topic) You know... FF8 seems to be one of those games that people changed their strategy after having played FF7. It is like "we made too many mistakes in terms of where to go for key plot points and how to lvl up" and the creators saw this coming and made it harder for players to access the new stuff. I am one of those people. Square made FF8 so much harder in gaining things like weapons, plot points and other items, but easier in winning battles as infinite power usage.

  • @captainsunder009 By this I mean, usually when it cfomes to a sequel a couple of things are changed but not the majority, but this tends to be like the wild arms franchise where it changes dramatically.

  • @captainsunder009 yeah same here! Plus, I feel like FF8 had the most free reign in terms of how much you wanna go off the storyline to do sidequests and explore the world map. I STILL get lost ont he world map after replaying it so many times lol.

  • @XAnjoJojoX yeah i have to agree with that, the world is beautifully crafted and very large, and the sidequests have some kind of a ... coherence to them, if that makes any sense. also, no matter how ridiculous some of them are to find out, they still feel as if it would be possible to get them on your own if you had just spent enough time with the game.

  • @XAnjoJojoX I used to get lost bad on the map and level up, but now I know my way.

  • LoL gosh my minds at ease now. However I disagree with what you said about it being insignificant to the storyline. Cause that's what they basically did yes? Decrypt their past to be able to understand their present/future, no? Anyway...genius. hahahaha.

  • @XAnjoJojoX haha you know i wouldn't be surprised if the entire game was designed out of that one situation on the train :p what i meant with insignificant is that you can miss her singing the song completely by just going into the cabin after you talk to her for the first time. but yeah the lyrics can actually be considered a summary of the plot in a way heh

  • It's Selphie singing:

    "Train, train, take us away

    takes us away, far away

To the future we will go"

    My cookie?

  • @atomixmax yep that is exactly it ;) you blew up my riddle to smithereeeens :)

  • @Verdegrand I actually said it before atomixmax. I was just restating what Phystri had said. So it was just Phystri who had solved it.

  • @captainsunder009 I mean that is what I meant by "That is why you said I was close. It was Selphie on the train." I saw Phystri's comment.

  • @captainsunder009 you went into the general direction first, then atomixmax was pretty accurate and phystri hit the nail on the coffin. a combined effort i would think, haha

  • @Verdegrand Yeah. Lol, we all contributed in a very funny way.

  • That is why you said I was close. It was Selphie on the train.

  • well at some point squall rinoa quistis irvine selphie and zell were all on the train...right?

  • @XAnjoJojoX yeah those are the scenes where you would encounter this :)

  • train train take us away, take us away far away, to the future we will go

    yeah i know. sup

  • @Phystri hahah sup. wooohooo, you blew my riddle up to smithereeeens :D

  • @Phystri Awesome.

Somehow, that quote seems significant, and perhaps has a heavy value. Like really significant. Maybe it foreshadows something in the game? I find it somewhat depressing, these types of small tunes.

  • @TheIshter you might laugh at this, but stuff like fate, determination, going into the future etc are all actually a significant part of the story.

  • @Verdegrand Why would I laugh? I thought FFIX was great, and certainly a lot of fantasy stuff there (hence the title lol).

But I'm more into those genres than you think. When I was a kid, I used to watch Back to the Future over and over. Also, a lot of my favorite anime have time travel as a theme.

I actually just got started in FFVI a few days ago, but I think I might just play FFVIII along with it~

  • @TheIshter heh i was referring to the thought that the lyrics of an ingame character train song would be a reference to the main story. and hey that sounds great, if you like back to the future and time travel stuff, then FF8 is your final fantasy game to go i would say. the story isn't as easily accessible than others though because it can be confusing at times (time travel stuff tends to be like that heh). but ff6 is a great choice too, its story stands out for sure because it is very mature.

  • Selphie: I loveeeeeee trains!

  • @atomixmax you are very, dangeriously, close :)

  • I think it has something to do with the Laguna dream sequences. Possibly with his relationship to Julia.

  • @bpahed no, nothing to do with laguna, julia or the dream sequences.

  • Something related to Selphie's clumsiness?

  • @atomixmax this is associated with selphie, yeah :) but it has nothing to do with clumsiness, on the contrary, lol

  • And Irvine.

  • I also mentioned Selphie, Ward, Kiros and Laguna were the others as far as main characters that fight go.

  • @captainsunder009 you didn't take a specific guess towards a couple of these, though :p

  • @Verdegrand OK. I say then Irvines event. When they are on the train and he is trying to woo Selphie. It defines him as he is not a fighter, but a lover.

  • @captainsunder009 nothing to do with irvine, but you are getting closer...

  • Quistis about to confess her love to Squall? (I know it's not even near the end of the disc, but...)

  • @atomixmax I was thinking that too. But I doubt it now.

  • @atomixmax heh no, that situation already has a track in the OST associated with it :) nothing to do with quistis or squall.

  • Ok an event. It could be when the SeeD's were announced and Seifers name was not selected.

  • @captainsunder009 no, nothing to do with seifer. when i say "event" i mean that in the broadest sense. it's something that is as insignificant to the story as it could possibly be :)

  • @Verdegrand Oh, ok. Then now I am lost.

  • @captainsunder009 you adressed squall, quistis, rinoa, zell. there are still a few left, aren't there :)

  • Something about Edea's fight? The tragic ending with the big blue icicle?

  • @atomixmax no, nothing to do with edea or that fight :)

  • Is it "where I belong"?

  • @captainsunder009 no, this does not reference a piece from the soundtrack.

  • @Verdegrand Oh ok. Sorry, I did not know that. My bad.

  • @captainsunder009 no problem, i didn't write it into the description so no worries there heh

  • Damn, I keep thinking of FFX when I hear you play this. I will find it.

  • @captainsunder009 that's an interesting association, what is it exactly that makes you think that this sounds like FFX?

  • @Verdegrand Well actually FFX-2 but I hear that style for FFX as well. It also has to do with the sound of the piano. It reminds me of the title screen for FFX-2.

  • @captainsunder009 oh now i see where you're coming from. yeah the sound is somewhat similar, you're actually right :) nice. ffx-2 was very piano-heavy and i loved it for that.

  • @Verdegrand Yeah. I am not the biggest fan of FFX-2 but I loved the music for it. I am guessing it would have to do with Quistis. She seemed to have a lot of deep secret emotions that she did not reveal to anyone.

  • @captainsunder009 yeah ffx-2 doesn't get much love from the people who have played it but most of them say that the music had some strong points. especially the piano collections, it's great what they made out of the source tracks. nothing to do with quistis, sorry :) she did indeed have deep and secret emotions, it's nice to see that kind of stuff because you have to find that out for yourself and it's not obvious. but you are going into the right direction. this has to do with a character.

  • @Verdegrand Hmm, I just don't know if it is a main character. I know it could be Selphie or Zell as they are happy people who have had problems. Selphie lost Trabia and Zell feels like a screw up for when he has let down the group so it would make sense for them to be put in as the music seems to be of a neutral stand point. It has both positive and negative points which kind of reflects their stories.

  • @captainsunder009 But trabia was disc 2. So maybe more so Zell.

  • @captainsunder009 it's not zell.

  • @captainsunder009 you are still somewhat going in the right direction, but this doesn't reflect on a character in general. it's a specific "event" that is associated with a character, that even then says something about the personality too, of course.

  • @Verdegrand Oh, ok. I keep making myself look stupid lol.

  • @captainsunder009 no on the contrary, you are going into the right direction :)

  • Is about that sad moment with Rinoa?

  • @atomixmax no, nothing to do with rinoa.

  • I have to go to bed for work in the morning but recap for others.... It's during disc 1, NOT on the soundtrack, has to do with Laguna very likely, and the event could be easily missed even if you've played the game. I feel I should've gotten it. Oh well, it was fun trying! :)

  • @VirtualHarmonies you are right expect that it has nothing to do with laguna :) good night and see you tomorrow.

  • maybe its less an event that happens but more of the emotion that you feel when it does happen. whatever it is.

  • @XAnjoJojoX it's certainly both - it is an actual event, and i tried to express the emotions in it. also i tried to make the style somewhat simple because i'd expect that more complicated harmonies would not work well for this.

  • I never beat ff8 (/ - \ ) but I feel like I should start it up w/ how well you play all of it's songs.

  • @ArchersBowHaveBroken heh thank you, that is nice to hear. absolutely play it, it's definitely worth checking out. and then have fun spending days reading storyline analyses afterwards lol

  • idk wut isit but it's nice :)

  • @Cheejyg heh thank you :)

  • I thought at first it might be the Waltz, but it sounds so much like Music Box from Final Fantasy V.

  • @redcloud02 nice idea, i guess the way i play those chords might be reminiscent of a music box. i have grown fond of music boxes lately, let's see what i can do with that sometime in the future. but yeah this does not reference a music box :)

  • Now I'm looking in the right direction and I feel it the answer is staring me right in the face lol. :) I should know this...

  • @VirtualHarmonies well i don't know if you should - because the "event" happens but your "witnessing it" is completely voluntary and it is very easy to miss it. i wouldn't be surprised if some people who played ff8 will not know what this references even when the answer is given.

  • What about that mixed up sound score?

  • @DeliciousRon you mean at the garden festival where you could mix the instruments and would have to choose between two pieces? nice idea but it has nothing to do with this :)

  • Hope you don't mind if I try to do darts blindfolded. ;)

Does it have anything to do with Liberi Fatali? But then again, it's in the soundtrack, argh. I just noticed that the English translation of the song kind of matches the playing (excluding Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec).

  • @TheIshter feel free to play darts blindfolded heh :) and no it has nothing to do with liberi fatali. although, the idea of "something matching the melody" is going into the right direction, in general.

  • By your comment to TheIshter it has to be related to something that happens during disc 1 but is not on the soundtrack as a song??? :)

  • @VirtualHarmonies yes, it "happens" several times on disc 1 and it does not have a track in the soundtrack.

  • @Verdegrand only disc 1??

  • @VirtualHarmonies uhm i am actually not sure if it is exclusively on disc 1, could be that it happens on disc 2 as well but i don't remember too well. disc 1 i know for sure.

  • goddamn. dont know the name of the song but goddamn. this is pretty damn beautiful.

  • @metalhawj thanks :) i'll update the video description once it's solved.

  • Composed to the lyrics of Eyes on Me?

  • @DeliciousRon no, has nothing to do with eyes on me, but you are kinda going into the right direction.

  • The Man with the Machine Gun! :) Julia might sing about him! :)

  • @VirtualHarmonies haha of course she will sing about that man ;) but that is not the connection to this piece.

  • Hmm, some of the melodies are "kind of" similar to the track "My Mind" from FF8 (I haven't played the game, just browsed through the soundtrack lol).

I can't put my finger on it, but does it have to do with the melody? I'm probably wrong, but it would never hurt to browse the soundtracks again.

  • @TheIshter has nothing to do with "my mind". in fact, it does not reference any other piece of the soundtrack. and yes, the melody is the important part. to such an extent that this piece would be very different for the japanese version (in fact i made one for the japanese version as well, will upload it sometime later)

  • @Verdegrand Hmm, language. Deep riddle and maybe I really do need to play the game to figure it out.

But actually, I think the pattern that I'm hearing is the "1,2,3,4... 1... 2...". Grr, lol.

  • @TheIshter yeah this can't be figured out by someone who doesn't know the game, you'd have to have played it. no hidden messages or number/melody correlations either :)

  • Kenji Kawai?

  • @jakebreaker heh no this was composed by myself :p

  • I fell like guessing Julia's theme like noseriouslyguys, but I already guessed "eyes on you" which is similar in nature. Maybe the answer isn't a simple song title.... hmmm... :) Also, I'm sorry to hear you aren't happy with the Kawaii anymore. None the less, that piece of equipment delivered many epic videos through your hands. :)

  • @VirtualHarmonies julia has nothing to do with this, although it would be nice to know what she would ... sing... about this :) and yeah i did a lot of videos with the kawai but the firmware glitches have gotten unbearable, i think i'll switch to yamaha or roland, let's see

  • @Verdegrand a.....hint! :).....

  • @VirtualHarmonies there are hints all over the place :)

  • Is it a faster and higher Fear maybe? ^_^;

  • @xxxHolo haha no, nothing to do with fear :)

  • @Verdegrand Darn. lol

  • I'm guessing it has something to do with Julia's piano solo... Hmmm.

  • @noseriouslyguys no connection to her piano solo :)

  • Oh, I love a good mystery! Hmm. Well, it's certainly beautiful. Peaceful... serene... of course! It's really 'Wounded' in disguise!

  • @Alkahest alternate universe where it was not an ice spell but instead a cake that got thrown at squall? :p haha but seriously, nothing to do with "wounded".

  • @Verdegrand Yes, the dreaded 'icing on the cake' spell, which ruined his pretty-boy hair forever... yeah, didn't think so. Well, I'll listen to it a little more.

  • @Alkahest in a world where a powerful sword slash will leave only a tiny scar in your face, no one would bother about ruined hair :p

  • @Verdegrand But remember, it's an alternate world. HP there stands for HairPoints. ;) So there's a Japanese version of this as well! Intriguing, yeesss.... To the internet!

  • @Alkahest hahaha hairpoints, nice :) well there is no "japanese version" as per itself, but the japanese version has a different script of course...

  • @Verdegrand Different script, eh? Cool. The nice thing is, even if I'm not the one to figure out the answer, at least I'll have learned something in the process. And that's always fun. Now then, another guess... something to do with 'Cactus Jack', by chance?

  • @Alkahest no connection to cactus jack, but i always thought it was cool that uematsu would compose a national anthem for a game. that alone added a lot of depth to the scenario for me. and heh what i mean with script is that the words (and hence the numbers of syllables etc) are different in the japanese version :)

  • @Verdegrand Thought as much. I was listening to it just now and thought I heard a small part of the refrain, but alas, my ears doth deceive me... yeah, I was sad they only used the anthem once, it had such potential. I expected a version of it to be Deling City's theme. Back to thinking!

  • @Alkahest yeah deling city had a completely different atmosphere than what that anthem would make you anticipate, right? although i must admit that i liked rufus' welcoming ceremony from ff7 a bit more than cactus jack :p

  • @Verdegrand Oh yeah, the Rufus parade theme was great. I was so happy to hear it again in FF9. You can see why I thought what I did about Deling City and Cactus Jack. ;) Now then, how about 'Starting Up', which has a variation not found on the OST?

  • @Alkahest oh the rufus theme is in ff9? it's been over 10 years since i played that last time so i don't remember at all. about starting up, this does not reference any piece on the soundtrack, be it on the soundtrack CD or as an unreleased chiptune. it references a certain "event" if you like.

  • @Verdegrand Yeah, during an ATE cutscene, the Prima Vista band plays it while you're in the evil forest near the beginning of the game. It was later released as part of the FFIX "PLUS" OST as the Rufus Welcoming Ceremony Millenium Version. References an event... hmm. Wish I'd played FF8 more recently than now, hehe. If I can, I'll make another guess before logging off for the night, but only if it's a good one. This has been a lot of fun, by the way, thanks. :)

  • @Alkahest cool, i had no idea :) if i should replay ff9 again sometime, i'll pay close attention to it. and you're welcome, this is fun for me too, i might do more videos like this in the future if i can find some more stuff like this :)

  • @Verdegrand It's just one of countless references to the series that makes a long-time player smile. Or in some geeky fanboys' case, stand up and cheer. Hah, here's hoping you'll be able to do more, then! Now, my last guess, based on the hazy recollections of my mind, and your clues... would it be the event near the start of the game where Ellone sees Squall in the infirmary? If not, then I eagerly look forward to guessing again tomorrow, or seeing the answer, whichever comes first. G'night!

  • @Alkahest hehe i know what you mean in regards to having a reference put a smile on one's face. the only other reference i can remember is the "neither a could nor a squall can stop us" line, but i guess there will be tons more, ff is great for stuff like that :) nothing to do with ellone, sorry ;) see you tomorrow and have a good night, i am guessing it might be solved until then, but if not, looking forward to your guesses heh. later

  • @Alkahest it's taken me over two hours but i think i finally get your "icing on the cake" pun haha

  • @Verdegrand FinalFantasy.wikia.com has an article on each and every allusion in FF9, if you're ever curious.

So the riddle was solved in my absence! I expected it to be, but hey, what fun we all had in the meantime. Doubt I ever would've guessed Selphie's "Train" theme, since I always saw it each time I played, and never really thought of it as being optional. :D

Yeah, my puns are sneaky and groan-inducing that way. Now to check out the Japanese version of this tune! "Woo-hoo!"

  • @Alkahest haha nice, thanks for telling me about that article, i'll check it out. yeah the train song is indeed optional, i too would read it every time i was at that part but you can just go into the cabin and miss it completely even if you talk to her first.
