I like this beautiful performance of that Maqam music. A great millennium heritage that Ziryab exported from Baghdad to Al-Andaluz where it evolved nonetheless with considerable similarities. It survives nowadays also in the Maghreb, via the refugees of the Reconquista, by name (Arab-)Andalusian classical music.

اهل بغداد كانوا يطلقون تسمية الجلقجيه على الفرقه الفنيه الشعبيه رغم ان الفرقه غالبيتهم من اليهود العراقيين ولاحقا سميت الجالغي وهي من اصل الجلغجيه . مثلا يقال جلغجية ابن بتو وجلغجية ابن حنانو ويسير امام الجغلجيه شعار ( مهرج يعني ) ويتوجهون للقهوخانه لاحياء حفله ... من التراث

this records amazing. thank u very much. i understand one times again Turkish and Arabic music culture from same origines. 2 Turkish great musicians went to Cairo for 1932 Arab music congres. Rauf Yekta Bey and Mesud Cemil Bey. i have got Mesud Cemil Bey's 5 performances in Cairo 1932. thanks again.

(BTW = kanun = from "canon" = Greek = "measured" = PRE-established, pre-measured and "standardised" intervals.

Now I understand why Bagdad was an Arabian cultural center.

I also enjoy Andalousian music (school o Fez).

I didn't know Iraqis play Santur. Its also used in kashmir. This music sounds very much like kashmiri music.
