The difference is that submachine guns fire smaller caliber rounds such as 9mm whereas a machine gun generally fires larger caliber such as 7.62mm. Hope this helps.

Machine guns are much bigger. It would be very difficult to impossible to shoulder a machine gun and fire it under full auto. They are typically fired in the prone position from a bi-pod.

Sub's are made to be carried by one person, and are made to be fired from the standing position (as seen here).

gmanflyairforce3, I do think so. But the Navy model usualy had a horizontal grip. And the rate of fire wasn't THAT lower. The "real" Tommygun, the Colt Thompson M1921A, fires about 800-900 rounds per minute. This one, the M1928, fires about 780 rpm.

thompson rifle wasent bad but one drawback they fired a smaller round. Actually fired a pistal round you could get it in two calibers 9mm and 45.

That is why it's a submachine gun. Meant to fire pistol rounds. Anyway, the .45 round is basically a magnum round, so it had great stopping power for its' size. But it was inaccurate do to recoil. A rifle would be like the M1 Garand, Carbine, K-98, Mosin Nagant, etc.
