That's a surprise to me too. a 1966 jam on a 78! OH, back in my "techo" days, I also modifyed MY Technics turntable to play 78s. Just recently, (2011), I changed it back. I have an old Magnavox HI-FI set that can play 78s. Check that one out on my vids I posted.
What the heck did you get that record from? Is it from a "Smile" collector's set? I've never seen a 78 that new. I have my GE Wildcat, but it plays 78's any vintage record players can play this one at the right speed that says "78" on the setting. I would love to get that someday.
That's also one of the funniest-sounding songs to listen to at half speed. My sister and I played our 33rpm beach boys greatest hits on the 16 RPM setting of my grandma's old record players when I was about 8 years old. We about DIED laughing at the end. Had to hear it half-speed on a tape recorder a few years ago, and it's still funny as an adult, even my parents got a chuckle. I wonder how many others played records at the wrong speed besides us. LOL
I've always wondered, are 78 rpm records higher quality than 45s? I hear that 45s are higher quality than 33 rpm. Wondered if it was the case with these other two...
Beatle records were still released in India throughout the 60s. 78s used shellac that came from beetles that are native to India so they kept producing them over there when the rest of the world had stopped.
It's very rare for a 78 to be released so late into the 60's. I've never heard anything like this before. Does it use the RIAA curve or the NAB curve? It's a shame they stopped making them because they were very pleasant to listen to but I suppose it wasn't going anywhere, the higher speed needs a heavier tracking force, which would wear the vinyl down pretty quick, the surface noise on shellac was just too high, though.
I have a turntable that does 78 R.P.M (its nothing new though, but I recently replaced the needle.) I have the records shown in this video, but lack the ability to digitise them. would it be possible if I gave ypu my e-mail for you to send them to me?
@oboeman123 okay, thats fine. I understand as it is, and i didn't realise that the other takes were on the smiley smile CD, so i will probably get that anyway.
As cool as this is, and I think that it is very cool indeed, it would have been even more cool if they had finally released a legitimate stereo version.
@CoolDudeClem Then you must check out the 78 rpm album pressing on Sunday Best Records by Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, a great 50s reproduction with 5 each 78s; I thought I was going to be the first one to do a new 78 but these then magnificently talented teens beat me to it! I am still going to release new, original L.A. blues-r & b-jazz 78s on Record Store Day in 2012
@JayinPa I will try to post them soon. I do not have a 78 player, however there is a easy mod that can allow you to play it. I have belt drive USB table to record this. Take a straw and cut it down to the right size of the motor top so that the belt travels on the straw rather than in the groove of the motor. It will then allow the platter to spin close to 78. I can make a video if you folks would like to show you what I did. I would not recommend doing this on a top of the line table.
@oboeman123 My main turntable is a Numark TTUSB and it only has 33 and 45 speeds. I have some 78s stored away in the basement and have been wanting to play them for quite a while. I saw another video on YouTube showing somebody putting sticky tape on the motor to make it play at 78 rpm, but one of my friends told me it's too risky. Does your method put any excess strain on the motor?
@OldMusicOnVinyl1 It is very similar to that method. I would not use it on a high end table. I have an less expensive table that I did this on. I would not recommend doing this for hours, but it should be ok just to listen to for the few minutes. All this is doing is expanding the size of the motor groove. I'm not a expert at physics, so I cant tell you exactly how it works or what kind of strain it puts on the motor.
Great new 78, featuring this Beach Boys classic hit!!...Friends, Lloyd.

I wouldn't try playing this on a real old gramophone! It will destroy it.

neat 78.i wish all 78s were made that way so a classic wouldn't break in many pieces

@ninenine909 As the groove goes fast, there's more place for the signal to be recorded, it is more precise and deep.
