I have problems introducing friends to the Cinematics... They just don't get it, yet "Man with the Movie Camera" just continues to draws me, the excitement grows and rhythm mesmerizes. If you don't get this you're a musical lost cause. I will never get tired of listening to this track!
This Cinematic Orchestra DVD "Man With a Movie Camera" was incredibly hard to find, but hot damn was it worth it. I highly suggest any Cinematic fan take the time to track this baby down!
@raitei202 I would just google search "Man With a Movie Camera, Cinematic Orchestra DVD." You should be able to find it on Ninja Tunes website or elsewhere... I did a quick google search, and it seems like they are easier to find than when I bought my copy from overseas a couple years ago. Cinematic Orchestra created a soundtrack for this 1929 Russian silent film by director Dziga Vertov, and it's simply mesmerizing. I hope you get a chance to enjoy it. Cheers!
i have never understood the dislike button, its an unnecessary function, if you dont like something, such as this video/music, simply move on, we dont need to know that you're a hater
@GoGoDanceGoGo I think it's fair to say that you can dislike something just as much as you like something. You're giving feedback, which others can take on board; much like your comment - which is essentially disliking the dislikers.
@GoGoDanceGoGo Because youtube has all kinds of videos, and it's nice when you're saved the time of watching something stupid because there are a ton of dislikes (from which you can assume that the title is misleading or something).
@GoGoDanceGoGo fourtunately the dislike bar doesnt make a difference for this vid. 18 people dislike vs damn near 2,000 likes lol.. i do agree with ya tho. haha
If you like this song, check out "animals" from Bonobo, and the whole "Black Sands" album actually, which is just... giving the definition of music without any word
@sabotage1111 i believe it starts off with a 6/4 section, goes into a 4/4 section, goes into a section which alternates between 7/4 and 9/4 measures, goes back into a 4/4 section, goes into 8/4, then finally back into alternating between 7/4 and 9/4
The film has been released with numerous soundtracks through the years. This is not based on the filmmaker's original instructions. The one performed by Alloy Orchestra (not this one) is based on Vertov's original composition for the film (which, of course, was played live by an orchestra in the theater at the time it came out). This is certainly really cool, but Alloy's performance is how Vertov wanted it and really compliments the film's imagery.
@RogueRotting360 Its based (copied if you prefer) on a theme Hermann wrote for the score of "The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad". Swinscoe isn't a musician & doesn't have the gift of creating original tunes or the skills to orchestrate them. He is a collagist who formerly worked in the offices of super trendy Ninja Records. Hermann on the other hand was a platinum genius with awesome skills acquired by dint of hard work & raw talent.
@stretchmorgan Those interested can hear Herrmann in the clip "The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad (1958) - Part 2 / 9" at about 2:30.
Of course, that theme comprises only about the first 2 minutes of this 9:14 cut, and it's fairly obvious TCO's recording is a recent one, not a collage of prior work. They've also performed it live many times. But why should mere performance be considered being "a musician"? I'm sure Yo-Yo Ma and Glenn Gould aren't musicians either. What have *they* ever composed?
@hbobrien No, Jason Swinscoe can't play an instrument. Nor did Gould take credit for 'composing' pieces that were really extemporisations on themes by Bach. Glenn Gould was an utter genius of the keyboard. Swinscoe's keyboard is just marked up to trigger samples. He can't actually play anything. He is a businessman exploiting a niche. This entire piece is based on Hermann's theme in the same way that 'Channel 1 Suite' is entirely lifted from Buddy Rich or Scruff's 'Get A Move On' is by Moondog.
@stretchmorgan Between the ignorance of the English language, etiquette, and music you display, I can only assume your account is an artificial intelligence program that fails the Turing test. Keep trying, stretch's programmer! I'm confident you'll get it right someday!
@hbobrien Er....right. Just go back to your CInematic Orchestra/Jamirooquai/Mr. Scruff CD collection & knock yourself out. BTW your grammar is shit. Your first sentence doesn't make sense. You've split it into 3 clauses that don't add up & the use of the preposition 'between' is baffling. You shouldn't put a comma before 'and' either. You're clearly just a sad little jerk. Bye
@stretchmorgan Among the definitions in the OED of "between": "By the joint action of, done by, shared in by, belonging to (two parties) jointly. (Sometimes said of more than two..." The usage has citations going back to 1297, including Shakespeare. It also seems you haven't heard of the Oxford comma.
@hbobrien I'm sorry but it is most definitely inelegant English. Far better to say 'From....', or even better 'Judging by.....'. Justify it anyway you like but the comma in your sentence is clearly superfluous. Nothing is gained by its inclusion as your statements are unambiguous. You are clearly a very pretentious person which is probably why you watch videos of this kind. I'm off to cleanse myself with some ACDC.
@stretchmorgan Is there anything more pretentious than calling someone "pretentious"?
As may be -- your previous critiques of TCO have been based on snobbery. Having now been shown you have nothing to be snobbish about, you flip to playing a "common man" card (AC/DC). This strongly implies your critiques are not based on sincere judgments but are just poses, each to be used in their turn.
I'm doing an essay on this film for one of my courses at uni. Thanks to that, I've found out that Cinematic Orchastra did the soundtrack to the re-release of this film. The soundtrack is absolutely brilliant.
im still rolling my J .. already stuck on this track.. glad i found this vid.. been listening to this track for years, on my broken creative-mp3... "who's the hardest"...
I just randomly found out that the opening orchestration piece is a loop from the Bernard Herrmann score from the 1958 movie The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. I'm amazed at what TCO did with the drums and clarinets over it! The whole movie is on YouTube too. Check out Part 2 of 9 at 2:30 and you'll hear it.
@shortfuse14 you can get the album, its called 'man with a movie camera' by the cinematic orchestra, pretty sure it's on i tunes. Came out on the ninja tune label ages ago. It's on spotify too mate
@shortfuse14 you can even by the dvd of this, also called 'man with a movie camera', by the same artists, check the ninja tune website, in fact if you're not aquatinted with that section of uk hip hop, you're in for a treat. Especially 'journey's by dj' by coldcut and the original 'now listen' solid steel mix by dj food and dk. Proper stoner hip hop.
@BoneyBoyX3316 great... thanks. now i have this mental image of deborah with her pug-face and boxing gloves, with duncan doing his whole "one eyebrow raised" thing...
This song is sick. I have the cinematic orchestra album motion which seems a little more like 'commercial modern jazz' compared to this, if you know what i mean. I like this song a lot, what's the rest of the album like and also other songs by Cinematic Orchestra like 'To Build a House' sound less jazz orientated than this or the album motion what are their other albums like?
@Schism54 : Well, this particular song is from an album of the same name, The Man With The Movie Camera, and the rest of it is very much in keeping. I'd say you're most likely to find that LP and the one titled "Every Day" (which also features this song) to be most aligned with what you're seeking.
@sbinfi : No it is not, sir; this was a commissioned soundtrack. To be completely honest I came at this through The Cinematic Orchestra, and have been remiss in researching Dziga Vertov's work in its original form more fully, though I did get ahold of both this film (with TCO's score) and the 1931 film, "Enthusiasm," in their entirety. "Enthusiasm" has a variety of traditional Russian music, as well as speech, so it's possible that TMWTMC did as well.
@oswaldomonroy I saw them do the whole show live in Glasgow a few years ago and it was utterly incredible. They had the movie projected on a huge screen behind them and did the whole score from the album. They finished off with a few numbers from 'Motion', like Ode to the Big Sea and a storming drum solo from Luke. If you ever get the chance, go for it!
@Delboy001647363 : That sounds just splendid, sir. Being a New Englander and fundamentally lazy, I have not had the opportunity to see them live. Quite jealous!
I bought this on DVD as soon as it came out - I have struggled to suggest to friends that they watch a silent 1920s Russian film with a jazz electronica score but they dont know what beauty they are missing in my oppionion.
sorry that only this V for jbfwinnig ;wanted to know if this is the original movies with its techniques or this is new version recently made..for sure the wonderful music very well added and is new for sure.
I've been in love with this soundtrack since it was released; it really does justice to the modernity of Dziga Vertov's film - there is nothing about this work that doesn't still captivate today.
I wish more people started listening to these tunes instead of crappy american pop/hip-hop or artsy fartsy alternative music. there are good tunes for both genres as well if you dig deep but people are sooo used to being spoon fed that they dont even value music anymore
the start of this reminds me of goblins getting into mischief..but when the bass drops...its by far the most beutifully lucid emotivating musical space walks...its like seeing the sun rise on the moon completely weigthless..sublime
I have problems introducing friends to the Cinematics... They just don't get it, yet "Man with the Movie Camera" just continues to draws me, the excitement grows and rhythm mesmerizes. If you don't get this you're a musical lost cause. I will never get tired of listening to this track!

I really hope to see them live someday...

Dos creadores magnificos e inovadores, cada uno en su tiempo... fusionados.

I've been in love with this soundtrack since it was released; it really does justice to the modernity of Dziga Vertov's film - there is nothing about this work that doesn't still captivate today.

This pays off a nice sound tribute to this Soviet Masterpiece.

I wish more people started listening to these tunes instead of crappy american pop/hip-hop or artsy fartsy alternative music. there are good tunes for both genres as well if you dig deep but people are sooo used to being spoon fed that they dont even value music anymore

I agree with my friend!

T. Daniel Howard does drums, and does 'em well too. Would love to see this performed live sometime in my life!

the start of this reminds me of goblins getting into mischief..but when the bass drops...its by far the most beutifully lucid emotivating musical space walks...its like seeing the sun rise on the moon completely weigthless..sublime
omly85 2 years ago 4
@omly85 they should make a video of ur description (seeing the sun rise from the moon) would indeed fit this song really well

Une de mes musiques préférées, je suis totalement fan ainsi que de la reprise Vilderness.
One of my favourite tunes, i like this version as well as Vilderness, which is shorter but quite impressive too.

I agree with DownInTheLabs. After the 2:33 mark this track gets down.
