@choppedpeanuts1 I think I have filmed it but I can't remember. In any case the mound of ashes contains very little ash - indeed the archaeology shows that it was partially constructed over one of the mass burial pits. I have got a lot of film from Sobibor. Maybe I will be there in a couple of weeks time for the anniversary of the revolt - I usually go if I am in Poland on that day.

Very ineffective way of making CO, are diesel engines, especially Russian ones where the nazis had no easy access to spare parts or German instructions.
Why not use wood-gas, there were over 1/2 million wood-gas vehicles in Europe during WW2, they are over 100 times more effective at making CO than a diesel engine.
I'm not a racist or a denier but some of the stories really do smell very badly.

I think Alan is right davodees - if everyone just started digging it would become a free for all, however I am surprised that the land has not been sectioned off, all of it, and professionally looked after and in those circumstances it might be a good idea to take samples. And if, or rather when it is proved to be all part of the same thing, the whole camp, woods and all should be a specially preserved place for people to show their respects. She showed us a poetry book that

Whoever described these as cremation pits does not know what they are talking about. The cremation locations were much closer to where the monument stands today.

A very interesting video. I'm currently doing an MA in Holocaust Studies and so Sobibor is the next memorial i'm hoping to visit. Alan, when you went were there many people there? I can't imagine many people have even heard of it let alone would take the trip into the middle of no where... though i find it more overwhelming when there are few people there and its very silent... kind of eerie.

Easiest route: From Wlodawa drive south in the direction of Chelm. At around 10km it is signposted to the left. Asphalt.
Alternatively follow the road that runs along the river Bug. When you hit the railway line follow the path along the railway - this is earthen and full of holes.
The village of Sobibor is not where the camp is. From there you must travel 5km south and turn right down a non asphalt road.
Is there any way to get there by public transport do you know? I just have visions of the time when my friend was driving on the Autobahn in Germany and loads of cars with Polish number plates passed us... all them had bottles of beer in their hands!! lol.
Also, are there any books about Sobibor you can recommend? It's not really a camp i know much about to be honest, most of my work has been focused on Buchenwald you see.:)
Public transport - not to Sobibor. There will be a bus to Wlodawa and then a bus to Chelm and you can get off and walk.
Books - Thomas Blatt Sobibor and From the Ashes of Sobibor, Rashke (can't remember title), another escapee twice told me (2003 and 2007) that he was going to write a book but has not.
The film is very inaccurate but the bits on the revolt are apparently very good
Is Sobibor totally off the beaten track or is there any form of museum or reception area to explain to those who visit the 4th or 5th largest extermination centre for European Jews what went on there and where the various facilities in the former killing centre were located ?
The first time I went there it was very difficult to find. The Dutch government has paid for some signs and the site has been considerably improved since 2004.
However you can still find bone fragments littering the area behind the former gas chambers.
For those that like to complain about the poor quality of my films this is your chance to have some input.
My Sony Cybershot - used for all films here but one - has given up on me. I do not want to buy a video camera - just a compact camera which I can carry around in my pocket.
It is incredible that these large mass graves are not marked with a fitting memorial so long after the terrible events. Thank you for posting this video.
What plans are there for Sobibor and the other camps in Poland to be properly marked and memorialised, as are the Gedenkstatte in Germany?
The location of the mass graves at Sobibór are now known following archaelogical work in the past six years or so although the forest has reclaimed most of the surface. I think that we will see signs on the sites of the graves as the site of the former death camp is increasingly informational.

There is NOTHING to put to rest. It is quite clear from the archaelogical digs where the digs were.
Apart from that you do not turn up and start vandalising a site by doing amateur digs. This is not an investigation nor is it claimed to be.
It is utterly clear where the bone fragments are.
These pits are part of ammunition storage bunkers.

As such the public can and do have a right to question the validity of anything that David Irving says because he has been discredited, legally in court as a liar, thats a fact, you can't dispute it
Unfortunately whether you like it or not you are promoting yourselve on You Tube by posting a video.

Obviously you will attact some hostile criticism and rude and offensive comments as well as positive ones
But that is not the point if you are giving a factual documentary and using David Irving and giving him a stage to air his views and given his notorious background, it seems fair to challenge the validity of the interview.

I think that most readers would see the logic and direction of my questioning.
After all you go to the time and trouble of making and posting a video of David Irving and given the close ties of Himmler to the Final Solution I would have thought it, well, rational to explore his views on this area.

A simple Yes or No reply would surfice.
The rational for the question is that if you interview him, knowing that he lost a libel case, you need a higher level of professional judgement and conviction that what he says is reliable and not a pack of lies.

I said and I repeat that as far as I can tell he is not a holocaust denier today or in the nine years I have known him. Answer is Yes.
As I state at the beginning, I am interviewing him on Himmler. As for what my 'professional' judgement is, yesterday who very strongly abused my knowledge with some sarcastic comment about 'as if I were a historian' or words to that effect - so I am hardly professional at all in your eyes am I? (Nor do I claim to be a professional historian for that matter.)

Firstly you say that David Irving is not now a Holocaust Denier, but I see no evidence from him to support this.
And if he has recanted his views, does he now need to make a formal apology for his past mistakes to those that he has offended?? I am not asking him, I am asking YOU as you have declared that presently he is not a Holcaust Denier??

As you can see in interviews he gave to NTV in Krakow in March 2007, he is not denying the holocaust.
I think everyone should apologise for past wrongs and that incidently includes those who accuse others of making films shouting Heil Hitler and other ridiculous accusations as you made to me. People in glass houses should not throw bricks.

Sounds like back peddling to me.
Given the contraversy surrounding David Irving in the last 20 years, I thought that as there are so many videos of him on You Tube still spewing out his own Holocaust deniel and that you stated in your video that he is not a Holoaust denier, the least he could do would be to post a You Tube video apology for the grief he has caused.
Talk about glass houses, your the one interviewing him not me, or was this just a politically correct oversight on your part?

I would also like to add, that as you are a reseacher into this specific subject, knowing his views, you had at the very least a moral obligation to challenge him.
Stating that he is not a Holocaust denier is one thing backing it up with an interview is another.
I think that if anything your the one who has dropped your own brick onto your own foot.

Challenge him on what? He is not denying the holocaust to me so how am I supposed to challenge him on it. As has already been pointed out by my Israeli friend on the interview page he clearly accepts it.
If you don't like my films I suggest you don't watch them. Unless you are trying to find evidence of my shouting Heil Hitler and denying Nazi crimes. In your position I would have apologised but I would not have made unsubstantiated accusations and insults.

You should have looked more closely at any felled trees to have determined the age of them compared to trees outside the area
A simple technique to determine how old the site was versus a control outside.
I would have also been tempted if possible to use a metal detector and take relevant soil samples There appeared to be no security there
Unethical, yes, and I know that you both are not archeologists but I don't see the point of going to a site to do nothing

Metal detection is illegal and I don't break the law.
Nearly all the trees in this area are post war, this was part of camp four. What am I supposed to do with soil samples, I am not a chemist. This is an ammunition bunker.

Two amateur historians on a walk about David Irving says those marks in the tree look like war time symbols.
Its a pine tree for heavens sake, WWII finished 60yrs ago, at that tree at best it was probably just a sapling then.
If there is logging going one, why don't you at least try to count the tree rings of the felled trees to get a rough age estimate for the wood. You guys are so dumb

I see Irving is claiming to have some expertise on tree-dating (dentrochronology) amongst his other expertise ??? It would be interesting to visit the site with a genuine horticulturalist or tree expert for some one to ascertain whether that ditch was a mass grave.

A very interesting video. I'm currently doing an MA in Holocaust Studies and so Sobibor is the next memorial i'm hoping to visit. Alan, when you went were there many people there? I can't imagine many people have even heard of it let alone would take the trip into the middle of no where... though i find it more overwhelming when there are few people there and its very silent... kind of eerie.

I have been to Sobibor many times and rarely have there been many people (except on the anniversary day).
It is hard to find but worth visiting.

Easiest route: From Wlodawa drive south in the direction of Chelm. At around 10km it is signposted to the left. Asphalt.
Alternatively follow the road that runs along the river Bug. When you hit the railway line follow the path along the railway - this is earthen and full of holes.
The village of Sobibor is not where the camp is. From there you must travel 5km south and turn right down a non asphalt road.

Is there any way to get there by public transport do you know? I just have visions of the time when my friend was driving on the Autobahn in Germany and loads of cars with Polish number plates passed us... all them had bottles of beer in their hands!! lol.
Also, are there any books about Sobibor you can recommend? It's not really a camp i know much about to be honest, most of my work has been focused on Buchenwald you see.:)

Public transport - not to Sobibor. There will be a bus to Wlodawa and then a bus to Chelm and you can get off and walk.
Books - Thomas Blatt Sobibor and From the Ashes of Sobibor, Rashke (can't remember title), another escapee twice told me (2003 and 2007) that he was going to write a book but has not.
The film is very inaccurate but the bits on the revolt are apparently very good

It certainly it was not well known until the film Escape from Sobibor came out in 1988.
A quarter of a million people were murdered here.
I have other films from Sobibor and interviews with an escapee which may interest you.

Is Sobibor totally off the beaten track or is there any form of museum or reception area to explain to those who visit the 4th or 5th largest extermination centre for European Jews what went on there and where the various facilities in the former killing centre were located ?

The first time I went there it was very difficult to find. The Dutch government has paid for some signs and the site has been considerably improved since 2004.
However you can still find bone fragments littering the area behind the former gas chambers.

What plans are there for Sobibor and the other camps in Poland to be properly marked and memorialised, as are the Gedenkstatte in Germany?

The location of the mass graves at Sobibór are now known following archaelogical work in the past six years or so although the forest has reclaimed most of the surface. I think that we will see signs on the sites of the graves as the site of the former death camp is increasingly informational.

Sobibor was a Nazi death camp. At least 250,000 people were murdered here between March 1942 and October 1943.
