For 10 years, from 1980-90, I worked right across Pine St. from St. Mary's Square and ate my lunch under the Sun Yat Sen statue pictured above many times. I got to pay that back on Oct. 17,1989, when I was personally responsible for keeping Long-distance and emergency communications working OUT of San Francisco during the Loma Prieta Quake. I've wandered the streets and alleys of Chinatown many times over the years.
@tamerswan Ikr? Our drama department is doing this play this year, I'm the tailor, in like the third scene, the guy who measures Wang Chi Yang's outfit, other than that I'm in ensemmble but yes, it's an amazing play/movie and I can't wait to perform in June!
Tazal: Myoshi was picked for the movie, not only because she was an Academy Award winner, but also because she starred in the show on Broadway. Juanita Hall is from the Broadway cast as well. Hall had previous worked for Rodgers and Hammerstein both on stage and screen for SOUTH PACIFIC.
I recall that she died of cancer shortly after "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" in the late 60's, but now I just found out she died of cancer a couple of years ago. Someone is really messing with my head. Richard Dawson was supposed to have died in the late 70's, but he is still alive. What the H is going on!??
Im going to sing this song for chior for the Lunar New Year performance. She was a great singer/actress. I really love this song and so those my friends =]
She was so precious. I've loved Ms. Umeki ever since I saw her on TV when I was a kid. I cried and cried when I heard she passed away. I never met her, but I still feel as if I've lost a friend. She brought so much happiness into the world! I'll miss her so much! I'll never forget you, Miyoshi chan...
Fatcathu ... Zie zie! I recently purchased this wonderful movie on DVD. Somehow you knew this scene is my favorite from the entire movie. Thanks very much. I'm very grateful.

Among the "miracles" she sings of, she might have included her own sweet self.

Miyoshi is one of the only actors in the movie whose performance goes beyond just being an archetype and into an actual character.
Her face has a kind of Audrey Hepburn quality.
WillScarlet16 1 year ago
@WillScarlet16 I agree. I love the sweetness, charm, class and innocence she brought to her character. Hepburn had a knack for doing the same thing.

Kennedy's assassination marked the beginning of the downward spiral of america. Things have gotten increasingly worse every year since.
