Personally not sure..But apparently Jerry Lee got his foot in the door at Sun due to Billy hiring him in his band,Sam phillips wasn't interested in piano players at that time.( according to Billy Lee Riley ) If that's the way it was it seems likely that Jerry Lee could have picked up on the song from a Riley session..either way seems Sam Phillips nearly made a massive mistake..
@54Richie Jerry Lee did it first. Jerry Lee is my favorite artist and this is a great version too. Billy Lee and Jerry Lee are among the greatest blues/country/rock hybrid artists.
interesting; who recorded it first?

Jerry Lee recorded it during two different dates in 1959. But I don't know when Riley recorded it.

Billy Lee cut it at 706 UNION on 04 06 1959
Roland Janes - lead guitar
Martin Willis - t. sax
Pat O'Neill - bass
James Van Eton - drums
it was Billy Lee Rileys last SUN session producing ONE MORE TIME/GOT THE WATER BOILING
