Who cares about video. Medium format cameras don't do video. D3x doesn't do video. A900 doesn't do video. Video is just a nice bonus extra. Professionals that shoot video choose 5DMK2 for video as paying 2k for a rig rather than 30k for video camera but to do high quality video you need follow focus rig and dolly and etc. Those extras add up to thousands of dollars extra.
The D3 and the 1D also don't have a popup flash, and I don't think HD video should be a feature for a DSLR. If you want to make a video, you buy a camera. DSLR camera's are for poeples who loves photography.
@mmercelis Isn't it better to have the feature? It's got it there, and it's good at it. It isn't built for joe average, and people might buy it for its DSLR specs but for video capabilities also. Saying it should be for 'people who love photography' is just snobbery.

@ratman2232 full frame cameras never come with built in flashes, because they are useless to professionals i also own a 60d and its not even close to as good a s a full frame camera. even though its crap because its sony its still better than a 60d
This guy know nothing, First real professional use external flashes not pop-out and its a freakin DSLR not a video cam(if you want a video camera buy yourself a flip video) video camera is used by giant camera companies to lure ignorant consumer.
Good camera, it's a cheap full frame body and you get bang for your buck. But I have to disagree on the low light performance. Anything over ISO800 and it seriously starts to lag behind the Nikon/Canon equivalents (d700/5d).
Just a little post on the comments, I agree that if you want a video camera, buy one. I'm not going to run around a family picnic with a 5d mkii taking video of an egg toss. And just for a little bit of info, if you check Sony makes the cmos sensor for Nikon. Yes it's true
@roselee0010@roselee0010 The Sony A900 is about P115,000, but I think it's much more in Sony Stores because of tax and profit. It doesn't come with any lens but if you Minolta lens they will work.
The DSC-H7 is a bridge camera, somewhat between digital cameras and digital SLRs.
At the guy who made the video, you obviously have no idea that the reason their is no inbuilt flash, is because where one would normally be, there is the best quality pentaprism viewfinder money can buy. This is meant to be a professional purist camera, and it does a darn good job.
The lens is bad especially on the edges it produces some wried unsharpness that is realy ugly and it isn't realy that sharp. The much Cheaper 2.8-4 D-Kit Lens from the Dynax 9D was way better so was the 28-70 2.8 G (and G LE) from Minolta, it is a little softer but the Bokeh is better and the Corners look way better.
@loveangel Professional photographers do not need video, which is why the sony a900 is an amazing camera, it's simple, dare I say basic, but yet combined with a zeiss lens, the quality will be unparalleled.
The last time I checked people were spending the same amount on film cameras, and did they have 1080p HD and live view? I think not.
@Metriohn DSLR's are more and more becoming the go to for video recording for Independent companies and even full companies, and why not have live view? Yup, badge loyalty is a funny thing...the Canonites didn't even accept it when the Luminous Landscape guys took Nikons, Canons and Sonys to the Arctic and the Sonys outlived the Canons in both batteries and functionality, 5 Canons out of 10 died in the cold and developed problems with moisture, none of that with the Sonys. No disrespect to Sony, but why would any professional buy this? I would rather have a 1Ds MK4, a 5D MK4, a Nikon D3X or D700. Lots of professional photographers are buying A900s just to be able to use the Zeiss lenses, even if they stay with another system. WHo cares what the lenses look like? They aren't fashion accessories! The Zeiss 135 f1.8 is as good as a lens gets.

I agree. This camera is on the right track. The reason I like this camera (and trust me, I am not a big Sony fan in general) are as much the things that it has, as the things that it doesn't have. Please, please, please, don't ever put video captuer, live view, or built in flash in a fine piece of kit for photography. Leica S2 is on the right track, and so is the Alpha 900. If it had all these features, it would cost $5000, and it would be corny and cliche like Canon. And please say Neekon

This camera is on the right track, the other new entry level sonys are missing the mark. I miss Minolta...
your an idiot and asking sony to put in a pop up flash would mean sacrificing viewfinder covereage. sorry but you shouldnt be reviewing cameras, its just that simple.
Who cares about video.... Like you said CONSUMERS will want that.. not Pros. A pop up flash? Pro Cameras never have a flash. Your an idiot dude........
I have the A700 and love it. The A900 was released after I bought the A700. I would have already upgraded to the A900 if it had live view. This is something I knew the A700 didn't have and so far have managed without it. After using an A350 it happens to be quite a useful feature.
3) professionals don't care about video recording, they only care about how well the photos comes out and how the camera performs. Does the d3 and 1d have video recording? If sony releases a camera with video, it will be in the enthusiast / hobbyist range of their cameras rather not their professional range. Probably the successor of the a350 will have video recordings, not the successor of the a700 or a900.
want a camera, buy a camera, want a video camera buy a video camera. Enough said.
On a practical sense, these video capable/still cameras are now being used in many applications by Documentary and movie DPs, especially on steadycam shots.
I do both, and yes some professionals care about video 'filming' and still photography at the same time. Imagine bringing the same equipment to both assignments. Besides, some documentary scene sequences are now being shot with these Video /Still cameras in the field.
1) photojournalists do use external flashes because they perform better than the built in ones.
2) higher professional models tend not to have built in flash i.e. nikon d3 and d3x, the canon 1d series and sony a900, if sony had to add a built in flash in the a900 then they would have to compromise on the pentaprism of the viewfinder. Even Paul Genge of Sony UK said this in a interview with "What Digital Camera" magazine.
I guess it's a matter of individual choice. Almost all pros (photojournalist mainly) got to have the 'money shot' at the right moment--it pays the big bucks-nothing wrong with having that pop up flash feature when you need a 'snap shot' quick.
I always have this notion in carrying a concealed weapon--"it's better to have it and not need it, than not having it and needing it" cause it might save the day when you do. And this applies even to my profession as a photographer.
i think this camera doesn't have a popup flash because all the room is occupied by a massive pentaprism which ensures 100percent viewfinder coverage, and besides that, most pixel peeping semipros and pros want something more powerful than the stock popup.
ive used the a900 and a d90 before, and i've got to say, video aside, that I actually prefer the D90, although the a900 is a more than excellent camera. I prefer the d90 because it seemed more user friendly, and it has more support with the Nikkor and 3rd party lenses. I cant really speak for Canon, and I don't think that pentax is even on the same playing field as these brands any more.
The only reason I can think of for Sony to consider putting in a built-in pop-up flash is to control the external flashes wirelessly. Other than that, I don't see it as a fuss.
i shoot with an A700, and the sole reason why i would upgrade to A900 would be because of its fullframe feature
the built in flash is rarely used because i know how ugly the photos turn. i rather mount my 3600Flash and get some good flash shots.
What's with the whole 'HD video in a DSLR' thing ? .. it's a freaking DSLR ! - the canon and nikon are so deeply handicapped that i don't understand why anyone would use it for HD video - get a real video camera instead!
If you want video buy a video camera, sheesh, what a dumb addition that would be. Also I wish this dimwit would explain the pentaprism and why there is no pop up. I shoot an A700 professionally and NEVER use the pop up flash. Sony, please dont waste time adding video to these excellent machines. Spend the r&d time making your cameras progressively better.
Totally agree, the flash on the a700 is pointless, my wife rarely used it. She just got the HVL-58AM, now she's saving up for the a900. She'll make do with the a700 til then.
Pro or not, every DSLR should have pop-up flash because it is an incredible convenience to have, and external flashes are incredibly burdensome to the overall girth of a typical DSLR. Video? Eh...gimmicky but once the other two fools on the block start putting it in...you get left behind when you don't have it as well. Pretty soon we will start de-evolving into pocket-sized digital cameras with inexplicably great high ISO and crisp, sharp video...oh wait...they already make those for $300.00...
Yes please include pop up flash and video. I still have my old F828 Sony with these features and I am always impressed by the quality even if it is an 8Mp camera. Leave the pros with their bulky accessories and non-sense practicality... The competition seems to have understood that. Come on Sony, I'll by the next model if you include the flash and the hi-res vid ! Any you will get also many buyers like me !!!
No doubt its very expensive. However, many companies will actually fund (or partially fund) for camera equipment. So the user working the camera does not necessarily have to spend a whole lot of money on their tool. After all, a camera is just a tool, the real artist is the one working behind the camera.
u can't penalize sony for not having a pop-up flash in the full frame camera, the space is used up for the large pentatrism needed for the 100% view finder :P
the reason professional cameras like these and others like canon 1ds mark 3, or nikon d3, don't have flash is so that you have to buy a professional flash. i mean come on, when was any built-in flash in a camera "professional"
@digitaljournal Pop up flashes are quite low output and poor quality, anyone who is going to invest in a camera this expensive would be quite the poser not to have an external flash.
Interesting comment about the lack of pop-up flash, I remember when Minolta (the camera this is historically still based on) Dynax 9 was mocked for offering just such a feature on what was seen as a pro model. I think Sony got this right and truth be known this is actually a better camera than the equivalent Canon or Nikon but badge loyalty plus investment in system kit and lenses means few will swap to the Sony - shame but maybe in the future.
Who cares about video. Medium format cameras don't do video. D3x doesn't do video. A900 doesn't do video. Video is just a nice bonus extra. +1 You should not being reviewing Cameras.
Sachphotgraphy 2 years ago
your an idiot and asking sony to put in a pop up flash would mean sacrificing viewfinder covereage. sorry but you shouldnt be reviewing cameras, its just that simple.
joker1009998 2 years ago 4
Who cares about video.... Like you said CONSUMERS will want that.. not Pros. A pop up flash? Pro Cameras never have a flash. Your an idiot dude........
Sachphotgraphy 2 years ago
I have the A700 and love it. The A900 was released after I bought the A700. I would have already upgraded to the A900 if it had live view. This is something I knew the A700 didn't have and so far have managed without it. After using an A350 it happens to be quite a useful feature.

why does this dude look like he is from the 80's?
dreamincashmere 2 years ago 3
Oh come on thats lame, if you want to record use a camcoder not a DSLR and pop up flash! what the hell are you talking about!
Xelacr 2 years ago 3
3) professionals don't care about video recording, they only care about how well the photos comes out and how the camera performs. Does the d3 and 1d have video recording? If sony releases a camera with video, it will be in the enthusiast / hobbyist range of their cameras rather not their professional range. Probably the successor of the a350 will have video recordings, not the successor of the a700 or a900.
want a camera, buy a camera, want a video camera buy a video camera. Enough said.

@someguy6481
AnakNangTupa 1 year ago 2
@someguy6481 I bet Canon and Nikon provide video recording with NO or VERY LITTLE additional cost. So,,,

this guy doesn't know much about cameras:
1) photojournalists do use external flashes because they perform better than the built in ones.
2) higher professional models tend not to have built in flash i.e. nikon d3 and d3x, the canon 1d series and sony a900, if sony had to add a built in flash in the a900 then they would have to compromise on the pentaprism of the viewfinder. Even Paul Genge of Sony UK said this in a interview with "What Digital Camera" magazine.
someguy6481 2 years ago 32
@someguy6481

A900 is a great camera. But the pop up flash will were there
skidjesper 3 years ago
i like the lens..
Atlixco1984 3 years ago
i think this camera doesn't have a popup flash because all the room is occupied by a massive pentaprism which ensures 100percent viewfinder coverage, and besides that, most pixel peeping semipros and pros want something more powerful than the stock popup.
Cristi2626 3 years ago 3
ive used the a900 and a d90 before, and i've got to say, video aside, that I actually prefer the D90, although the a900 is a more than excellent camera. I prefer the d90 because it seemed more user friendly, and it has more support with the Nikkor and 3rd party lenses. I cant really speak for Canon, and I don't think that pentax is even on the same playing field as these brands any more.
RMPalm2000 3 years ago
The only reason I can think of for Sony to consider putting in a built-in pop-up flash is to control the external flashes wirelessly. Other than that, I don't see it as a fuss.
yokechye 3 years ago
i agree with others...
i shoot with an A700, and the sole reason why i would upgrade to A900 would be because of its fullframe feature
the built in flash is rarely used because i know how ugly the photos turn. i rather mount my 3600Flash and get some good flash shots.
What's with the whole 'HD video in a DSLR' thing ? .. it's a freaking DSLR ! - the canon and nikon are so deeply handicapped that i don't understand why anyone would use it for HD video - get a real video camera instead!
TheDivineCellphone 3 years ago 4
Pop up flash not needed, video not needed. This is a pro still camera, not a semi-pro video device.
zalmo123 3 years ago 6
If you want video buy a video camera, sheesh, what a dumb addition that would be. Also I wish this dimwit would explain the pentaprism and why there is no pop up. I shoot an A700 professionally and NEVER use the pop up flash. Sony, please dont waste time adding video to these excellent machines. Spend the r&d time making your cameras progressively better.
JoelC13 3 years ago
Totally agree, the flash on the a700 is pointless, my wife rarely used it. She just got the HVL-58AM, now she's saving up for the a900. She'll make do with the a700 til then.

I agree with you JoelC13

Pro or not, every DSLR should have pop-up flash because it is an incredible convenience to have, and external flashes are incredibly burdensome to the overall girth of a typical DSLR. Video? Eh...gimmicky but once the other two fools on the block start putting it in...you get left behind when you don't have it as well. Pretty soon we will start de-evolving into pocket-sized digital cameras with inexplicably great high ISO and crisp, sharp video...oh wait...they already make those for $300.00...
dorkomania 3 years ago
Yes please include pop up flash and video. I still have my old F828 Sony with these features and I am always impressed by the quality even if it is an 8Mp camera. Leave the pros with their bulky accessories and non-sense practicality... The competition seems to have understood that. Come on Sony, I'll by the next model if you include the flash and the hi-res vid ! Any you will get also many buyers like me !!!

OH MY GOD!! IT'S TORONTO!! GO LEAFS!!
eddie2042 3 years ago
No doubt its very expensive. However, many companies will actually fund (or partially fund) for camera equipment. So the user working the camera does not necessarily have to spend a whole lot of money on their tool. After all, a camera is just a tool, the real artist is the one working behind the camera.

Man this is some serious camera for some serious cash

DAMN NO!!!! Video is not what a DSLR should have.
anticimexxx 3 years ago 6
u can't penalize sony for not having a pop-up flash in the full frame camera, the space is used up for the large pentatrism needed for the 100% view finder :P

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Understood, but it would have been nice to add it on and find a way to make it work. As we mentioned in the video, however, it is all personal taste.
digitaljournal 3 years ago
the reason professional cameras like these and others like canon 1ds mark 3, or nikon d3, don't have flash is so that you have to buy a professional flash. i mean come on, when was any built-in flash in a camera "professional"
eddie2042 3 years ago
if i youtube could let us vote on the user comments, i would rate this to -400 (if i could)

@digitaljournal can you tell me the any top end cams with built in flash flash ?
radiocrash 11 months ago
@digitaljournal Pop up flashes are quite low output and poor quality, anyone who is going to invest in a camera this expensive would be quite the poser not to have an external flash.
Drinapropriatetouch 11 months ago
@digitaljournal Its a professional camera. Professionals don't use pop-up flash. Silly review.

The A900 doesn't replace the A700...
