Which is why I may wind up saying that the writing team for this show(Who also gave us Batman:TAS, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited) is one of my favorite writing teams, because they give us more than a one dimensional hero and villain... @TomboTime it's actually quite simple, sand superheated will melt and create glass. Flash's speed means he can create enough friction so that the rock/sand melts from the generated heat. SCIENCE
