  • Was also struck at the similarity to Horne's sound... Imitation is easy and the road to finding ones own individuality is less traveled by. However, Genaux came into her own as Horne was retiring. The physically more marketable mezzo success represents one example of how the 'business of music' is ruining the arts and quashing artistic individuality by encouraging carbon copies. Villazon being a prime example.

  • Fine Rossini....Brava Vivica....wow!!!....she just kicks my poor Butt around....down to Fuego, and back up to Fairbanks.....amazing voice....making me really like opera again....who else would do this/????

    Peace be with you.....

  • il brano è chiaramente troppo basso per lei... come per tutte!... ma la tecnica è molto buona, e rende bene tutto... e comunque: chi mai l'ha cantato tanto meglio?

  • @SkateNater I think that can be true, but B3 is not "very low" for a mezzo, and is usually still consistent with the rest of the voice. I can tell a lot mezzo sopranos apart singing in that register, and i think she sounds a lot like marilyn horne

  • The finest mezzo around today ~ I could listen to hear sing anything, but ... I'm desperately waiting for her to sing/record Giovanna Seymor in Donizetti's Anna Bolena, she'd be sublime, I think it is in fact the finest female role (as far as beauty of music and character presentation goes) ~ Brava! Yes, there is indeed a resemblance to Ms. Horne ... Vivica is the first challenger to take on Horne and be left standing!! It's been a long time since Marilyn, thank goodness for Vivica!

  • Beautiful. Some observations:

I hear a lot of Marilyn Horne in VG's sound.

I notice she does some funny things with her mouth and moves her jaw to the left sometimes. What's that about?

I love her little jacket, but I'm undecided about the dress underneath.

  • she does have some strikingly Horne-esque elements to her voice, that low B at the end sounds like, exactly like it does when marilyn sings it.
