That would work, but we get to that topic a short while later and usally the weather isn't the best by then. Also, I don't like lauching solid projectiles- too hazardous.
Also, a structure to allow for precise stretch to calculate the force needed to accelerate the ball to the necessary velocity could allow for some fun, long range demos.

you people are amatuers, i can launch a balloon with the same aparatus "by myself" about 75+ yds and hit a stop sign or a person.
golf balls go a great distance further!
