That's not the same character as the one who took Charles' oxen. His name was Liam O'Neil. Charles helps Mr. McKay. His son, Abel, (played by Dan Blocker's son, Dirk) was helped by Caroline when she taught school for an injured Miss Beadle. He was older than the other kids & couldn't read. Mr. McKay was against him going to school at first, but then relented & said it's up to him. Mrs. Oleson humiliates him & he runs out. Caroline convinces him to come back & in this episode, he's in school.
