This was the second attempt to launch a Mercury-Redstone flight.
A month earlier, a Redstone ignited and shut down on the pad, triggering the escape tower (but not the capsule) to shoot away from the rocket.
The rocket and the capsule were left on the pad.
The rocket was scuttled, but the capsule was mounted on another Redstone, which did fly/
