  • The Japaneese have whaling research vessels all over the place. Why not just ask them?

  • Yeah, that's what they are doing...research...lol.

  • i whach National Geographic on T.V

    thanx 4 every thinx =)

    .

  • they can protect them if they don't go there

  • O.O! amused.....

  • Tell me more?

  • Lonely nite in NW pa. Waiting for spring so I can ride my harley..Maybe daytona in the end of feburary..jerry

  • The software that allows them to track the whales visually is pretty impressive. Such a magnificent animal.

  • Hey ICR: See how they collect data without eating the whale afterwards? Take notes.

(yes, they hunt humpbacks too, as well as sperm and fin whales. all three are considered endangered.)

  • The visualization of whale paths is pretty neat and interesting.

  • Da whales oughta HUMP da predatory fishin boats .

  • love the crazy hick chase music! lol

  • That is so incredible to see, the pattern in which they dive to feed, so precise yet they have minimal ways of measurement compared to us humans. Amazing animals :).

  • lmfao @ Expert Tagger

  • Japan can only hunt whales for scientific reasons. yet they havent released one article since many years....epic fail

  • screw them whales we all know there the security for the USO's

  • oh I met 'they're' I don't need the grammar police on me like guy below me.

  • @ilovemaryam08 You should be jailed for being such a fascist dumbass.

  • Comment removed

  • Fascist (not facist, dumbass) is authoritarian state control, which is exactly what you described concerning boaters. Ignoramus.

  • @ilovemaryam08 sorry but you are the one who failed here.

    - A neutral examiner

  • I must admit, the alliteration effect of "HUMPBACK HWALES" is absolutely alluring.

  • moby dick!!!

  • @nanaimo757 exactly!!

  • HWHALES! lol

  • this guy is like "hwale" and "hwere" COOL-HWIP!

  • The best way to protect the whales is to get the fuck out of the water ;-D

  • hwere are the hwales

  • its WHALE not HWALE!

  • hahah

that's the first thing i noticed

    emphasis on the H

  • WTF?! Leave the freak in the closet!

  • Man...at least, the whales are getting killed accidentally versus the dumbfucks whale hunters in the Pacific.

  • No way! It's wasteful for a whale to die and not have its meat and blubber salvaged!

  • animals eat it.....for a long time....then it bodie sfalls to bottom were they live in it or finsh it off

  • Well, I know other ANIMALS will eat it, Bong0, but what about me? Where's MY whale steak?

  • @triplexxxsatyr

If are referring to Japan's harvest of minke whales, you are wrong to call them "dumbfucks." Japanese whalers are engaged in a well-managed, sustainable harvest, and it's a shame that they have to do under the silly pretext of "research," which it clearly is not. I don't understand how whales got to be so sacred. I am all for protecting endangered species, but if whales can be harvested in a sustainable manner, and there is a market for the meat, what's the problem?

  • @Platyzoan They don't. I worked for a Japanese company. Everyone there who knows anything about the industry would tell you it's not sustainable. They just love eating whales like they love eating chicken. period.

  • @bransworth

I know the whale hunt is all about cuisine and not research; however, do you have data (something not from the Sea Shepard) that supports the assertion that the minke are even threatened?

I am not an expert myself, but everything I have read suggests that the minke population is quite healthy. If it turned out that they are in fact threatened, I would change my position on Japan's harvest of them.

  • @Platyzoan

As far as I'm aware, the problem with killing whales/dolphins isn't so much that many are endangered, but it's more that they are intelligent social creatures that rival our own intellect and sentience.. so it's kind of like eating people.

  • @Flyborg

I have never seen any evidence that whales have an "intellect" that rivals our own. Yes, they clearly have intelligence. Yes, they are social creatures. So are pigs. I know pigs have an intelligence that rivals dogs', and although the thought of those cute creatures being butchered makes me a bit sad, I still enjoy my pork. I would be a hypocrite if I begrudged the Koreans their dog meat or the Japanese their whale steaks.

  • Maybe the concern is not wholly about ethical considerations. Whether or not whales are intelligent creatures, they are important to maintain the ocean's ecological balance. I don't particularly like the idea of hunting whales for food when there are so many alternatives. Minke whales may not be endangered now but how about in the next 10 years? And Japan hunts other whales like sperm whales which are classified as "threatened" species.

  • @brensworth

According to the IUCN Red List, the sperm whale is in the safer category of "vulnerable" not "threatened." There are hundreds of thousands of individuals of this species and Japan's annual take of it is in the tens. The minke whale take is in the hundreds. There is no way that these catches are going to make these species endangered or even threatened. Other ecological issues might eventually threaten these species, but the Japanese whalers won't.

  • Dear, "Vulnerable" is under "Threatened" in the IUCN list. You mentioned that other ecological issues may harm the whales. That's exactly my point, there's already so many other things killing them without Japan's whalers adding to the damage. Not to mention they also eat dolphins... And besides, it's not healthy to eat whales. As large marine animals, dangerous levels of mercury and other heavy metals are found in whale meat.

  • Sorry sweetie, I mixed up the terms "threatened" and "endangered." Like I said, it's not my area of expertise; however, the basic numbers still show Japan's whale take is a miniscule fraction of of each species population. It won't do anything.

    Dolphins? Same thing.

Unhealthy to eat whale meat? Yes, but so are a lot of things that we don't need to outlaw.

If you want to worry about whales, worry about uncontrolled fishing, pollution, and global warming. These are the real threats

  • @Platyzoan

I guess it's partially culture and how you draw the (blurry) line.

You say "pigs are smart too, so that's why it's fine to eat whales". I say "pigs are smart too, so I don't eat pigs". :p

The line between "self aware" things like primates, and "dumb" animals, gets more blurry all the time. I'd rather lean on the side of caution, and avoid killing and eating things which may be almost as much a "person" as I am, just without the language center of the brain.

  • @Flyborg

I respect your position especially if you don't eat any meat. I really think being a vegen or at least vegetarian is a very ethical way to live. Not only does it respect the possible moral agency of other animals, but it is undoubtedly the most environment step any individual can take.

Even though I understand the benefits of not eating meat, I am not ready to take such a step. And I am not going to hypocritically shake a finger a the Japanese for eating whales. That's just me.

  • @Platyzoan Actually I'm not a vegetarian - I gradually went from simply avoiding meat when possible (since humans eat far more than we need anyway), to outright not buying it.. except fish. Unlike red meat, fish is actually healthy, and they eat each other anyway, so they're getting eaten one way or another. :p

But yeah, I also respect your position even though I disagree with it, and I think words like "vegetarian" don't help because they create this black-and-white impression of food choices.

  • @Platyzoan

..also it's not exactly settled, but try googling "Whales Might Be as Much Like People as Apes Are". But yeah, I agree it's very largely opinion, as any line you draw is going to be a blurry one. There are "obvious" things not to be eaten, such as humans and non-human primates, and then there are "obviously fine" things to eat, such as clams which have no brain, or carrots etc. But anything inbetween is not an easy answer.

  • much more majestic then a cow or a dog or any shit like that. but hell iam with Quatuv wheres my plate .
