It's funny how bad this seems today compared to when it was first released. I think we need to come to grips with the fact that we all fell in love with a terrible terrible B movie.
The power of this scene lies in the character(Grady)'s change up from being the mild butler servant, transforming to a very menacing and dominant presence. Film making and acting at its best!
The power of this scene lies in the character(Grady)'s change up from being the mild butler servant, transforming to a very menacing and dominant presence. Film making and acting at its best!
My girls, Sir, they didn't care for this movie scene at first. One of them actually went online and tried to vote it down. But I.... Corrected them sir.
@JacquelynCarmichael Yeah things have changed since then. For some weird reason, you could get away with saying things like that in movies in the 70's and early 80's. I don't find the scene funny really, but then I have an odd sense of humor so who knows? lol
Delbert Grady was so polite and mannerable throughout this whole scene. Even at 3:11 when his evil side finally reared its ugly face, he remained extremely polite and cordial. Quite disturbing actually.
@LIONSMANIAC The "nigguh-cook" was also the voice of Meadowlark in 'Scooby Doo meets the famous Harlem Globe Trotters' I'm telling you this because I felt perhaps you need a good talking to if you don't mind my saying so...perhaps a bit more.
@Moloch95 the mirrors or reflective surfaces in all the scenes where he interacts with apparitions suggests this interpretation, but how does he get out of the kitchen storage room?
@DivisionbyZer0 exactly .....same things been bothering me. i believe that Kubrick intentionally made it ambiguous so that it can b interpreted on both ways....
jack nicholson must be recognized as the greatest horror character: jack torrence, of all time!!! is acting in this movie is beyond reproach, recognition, or standard. pure excellence
Jack Nicolson is such a good actor he has me convinced. I often wonder if it's all just an act or if he really is insane that's why he does it so good. Afterall, it takes one to know one.
Did any of you know that this movie was perceived as a very terrible film when it came out. Very corny and stupid. Shelly Duvall and Stanley Kubrick were both nominated for Razzies. Stephen King hated the movie. Just shows how perception changes over the years.
@mowgli123456789 I guess we will have to agree to disagree. One of my favourite parts in the book is when the hedge animals come to life, which obviously isn't in the film. I guess that's why I prefer the book to the film. Still a good adaption, though.

@619badazz13 What I meant was you know all those theories that it was meant to be or that he is a reincarnation of a former self or all that crap at the end of the film with the photo. It is really simple but people are making it more complicated than it is meant to be.
@bigoleTANK read the book it explains everything. wendy and his son wanted to leave the hotel jack lost his job teaching and just got this job and really wanted to keep it over time he began to lose his mind battling staying sober and yeah.
