Now I feel like I understand how important it is to learn new shapes by their basic dimensions first. You truly have to start at the base.

It was great video. The valley of suck is a real nightmare to me :) I feel that I failed, and you're right, if I can step through it, I can find the reason of feeling suck. I wish I could join once to the workshop

I liked the story aout the butterfly statue. It reminds me of when I first saw pictures of the pieta or this one I saw done in zbrush of this strong greek figure carrying this huge chain on his back and I just went 'wow, this is astonishing'

Hi Ryan, thanks for this video especially because i have been stuck in the valley of the suck for a while now and didnt think i was progressing. You have shown a great insight into how even professionals even get into the valley of the suck. got into the valley mainly cause i wasnt as good as other artists and not getting any offers for a character artist job. but im still going at it and still sculpting. thanks for the great advice and looking forward to reading the book.

@crazygtotheberty Don't let it get to you crazygtotheberty. Remember, its just a valley. One thing I have seen happening is people looking for character work end up getting good jobs in environment sculpting. May be an avenue to explore.

Awesome instruction infused with personal commentary that artists can truly relate to - that's why Ryan is such a great teacher. Chapter 3 is great and covers a topic I know well thanks to ZBW. It has a very succinct set of explanations which give you the tools to understand the face and how to sculpt it. @orpheelafondlummis I agree. I remember my teacher, Al Gury, saying to me once, "Its not important to not make mistakes. Its only important to know what mistakes you make so you can correct them quicker." Amazing advice for artists struggling to create art and wonderful advice for life.
