This is from the second tv adaptation of"Once Upon A Matress!"..Ms.Burnett had done a tv adaptation in the early 1960's with former kids tv host/performer:"Uncle Joe"Bova as"Princess Dauntless" and Comic Actor and singer Jack Gilford as"King Seximus".
Is this available on video? Those costumes have got to be Bob Mackie's creation! They look like the costumes he made for the Carol Burnett Show! So beautiful! The wind effect was hilarious! LOL!
Interesting to compare 1964 clips with this 1972 version. It's already getting "toned down" a bit, which only got worse with the 1997 Broadway revival, and became terrible by the disastrous recent Disney remake. I wish I could have seen the original broadway production. Thanks for posting this.
This 1972 version of "Once Upon a Mattress" was produced after Carol signed a new contract with CBS which gave her and then-husband Joe Hamilton total control over "The Carol Burnett Show" under a new entity, "Punkin Productions" (the first five seasons were co-owned by the late Bob Banner in partnership with an earlier production concern, "Burngood," as per the terms of her earlier 1962-72 CBS contract). Also in 1972-73, she and Alan Alda starred in a TV production of the play "6 Rms Riv Vu."
I am playing Winnifred in our production RIGHT NOW!! I love her! I have learned a lot about this character from watching her videos! I am so excited to perform!!!! ^_^
Where did you get this? I think I remember it being on TV when I was younger. Is the whole thing available? I saw the remake. I didn't like it as much with the whole pregnancy thing. It was more family. I do like Tracey Ullman(?) but Carol's much better in that role.
@spazneria yeah i know. i didn't even realize you replied to my comment! lol but thank you! i was the only lead singer that DIDN'T need a personal mic...go figure hehe
@sgshitfl12 i realize this is a year late, but the key in belting is not to be loud - it is to make a full, rich sound in a healthy manner. don't concentrate on being loud, concentrate on having a full sound, and the loudness will come.
Thats not all she's great for...actually, Miss Hannigan is (not meaning to belittle the part at all) at the very bottom of her "greatest acheivements".
Oh i know! It's just I'm singing this song as an audition for Annie and i hope to get Miss Hannigan and i thought it might add to it that the song was sung by Carol Burnett. I know she's done soooooo much more awesome stuff, but i was just thinking about her role in Annie. :)
I saw a show on tv a long time ago that had Caro Burnett playing Calamity Jane the same role Day did in a move in the early fifties. Carol was absolutely amazing. So blew Doris's version right out of the water.
Oh, have you seen all the other things she's done. Once you see all that, Miss Hannigan just drips away as nothing but a "bit role" in the grand theatrical performance of her life!
Having played the two roles twenty years apart I think Carol was worthy of an Oscar nomination at least for Miss Hannigan. She was the best thing in a mediocre movie. Sure she wouldn't have turned it down. I love how she spans the generations.
oh my god i love carol burnett and her voice is amazing...and i love the wind affect! and look at how big mouth gets when she sings shy the first time...lol! can't stand the laugh track though.
Carol Burnett TOTALLY ROCKS at playing Fred!Just ask my director/mat teacher (We're doing this in April, but I'm a Lady in Waiting, though.)Sarah Jessica's version is not as funny as Carol's version of Shy!=D GO CAROL!
Thank you for posting this! Do you have any more? Or can you tell me where you got your copy? I'm directing this and I'd love to look at the whole thing.
I love this version. Carol's got that big voice that makes this song so perfect. I just watched the Sarah Jessica Parker version at the 51st Tony Awards and it was just pathetic. Long live Carol Burnett.
