If you are less concerned about setting your own life straight than in saving the world, the song is ironic; if you are more concerned that way, the song is hopeful, in that it appears to say "Save one life and you save the world today." I'm sure it was written to be ambiguous.

To a Tuscan or Piemontese Italian, those dialects sound roughly like an Aussie sounds to an English speaker, i.e. fairly barbaric. (Even Roman Lazio Italians, whose dialect is not thought highly of (think Brooklyn), consider Southern Italian low-class.) But those ARE real Italian words.
