What great year 1984 was in Toronto our generation. Tears for Fears filmed a music video at the Metro Toronto library; and Brian Adams filmed a video at the old theatre on Younge St.
Im 32 years old now but I remember when I was like 4 or 5 and I used to force my grandpa to wait until a red train came when he used to take me out for subway rides. I was fascinated by the subway when I was that age and my grandpa used to take me for rides just for fun. God rest his soul, great man!
Which TTC stations was this filmed at? I know Sheppard (which looks so different back then!), but which other ones? I was born the year this song came out. Therefore I have no recollection of the red trains!
@888sidewinder Actually, according to their website (thespoons.ca - The Spoonerhythm Network), she was born in Hamilton, Ontario. And her nickname (at least back in 1984) was 'sweet thing'.
This was filmed at Kipling Station and I knew the girl at 3:06 but it was so long ago I can't remember her name... but we were all so THRILLED when it played in MuchMusic!!
i miss the 80s,and the RED ROCKET,especially when the lights went off and on,that was the best part of the riding the subway. and seeing the old Sheppard Station, that really brings back the ole memories. thank you for posting the video.
I remember this song, when i was a child growing up here in Toronto, if you look at 1:30-1:31, theres the TTC operator with the whistle, any Torontonian living or growing up in the 80s here would remember men like him would tell that the subway is leaving by blowing his whistle, before the noise on the subway door came, does anyone remember those TTC conductors and whistles?
I remember 'Live' Earl Jive and the Dave 'Mars Bar' Marsden playing this on 102.1 during my formative years. Living in WNY, I loved, loved, LOVED the Toronto, Mississaugua, and Hamilton radio stations -- so much better than the pablum the local (Buffalo) stations played: I'm looking at you, 97-Rock and WNYS!
All grown up, now, and living in San Jose, CA -- I'd love to have this re-released, and see Sandy, Gordon, and the rest get a resurgence and get the exposure and credit they deserve.
@fionnbharro Could not agree more. Born and raised a "Trontonian" and working at CityTV.. you would see a lot of these guys around the station and hear them in rotation on radio... gotta agree about the USA FM choices in the day.... awful. What I loved most about The Spoons was their videos were just about fun.
@Michaelrg ~There used to be great footage of The Police Picnic on here, years ago. The Go Gos played there too. Nash The Slash, Iggy Pop, The Specials. Forgot about Blue Peter! wow...
@JeffTheCanuck2 one of the members of nash the slash ran a sam the record man shop in the 80's i use to see the guy all the time i never knew who he was till someone told me it was him..he use to have rings on his hands that had eyeballs ..one of a cat another the all seeing eye etc long hair
Huh, sitting in my office and don't know why old emotions came into my head. Youtubed it, and completely forgot this video existed, It's Toronto from when I lived there!!! I remember falling asleep with my guitar on the subway, travelling from shepperd to old mill!!! This is the TO I remember!!!
I loved the Spoons and all the Canadian rock at the time.
Nowadays it's mostly all crap. Music will never do the same thing it did from the fiftiers to the 80's. Youd have to revolutionize the instruments, everything 's been mostly don and played on them.
@menkeechang Yeah the chick is/was hot. Nowadays it is mostly crap but you forget that back then it was mostly crap too. Sure there were great songs and we remember those but we forget the piles and piles of crap songs that came and went. Stuff by Milli Vanilli, Winger, Warrant etc etc etc. Then as now for every good song there are more than a few bad ones.
@turfturbo She really was gorgeous! I interviewed them for my university newspaper in 1986, and they might have been the nicest 4 people you could ever meet. So sweet, and so kind to me. I never forgot them because of it!
@turfturbo She really was gorgeous! I interviewed them for my university newspaper in 1986, and they might have been the nicest 4 people you could ever meet. So sweet, and so kind to me. I never forgot them because of it!
I wouldn't use that way of describing it myself. It's not exactly the musical version of Platoon or the Road to Perdition or whatever, this is quite a bit lighter, but it's still heartfelt.
I rode the "rocket" every day to U of T downtown. I moved from T.O. a long time ago. This brings back a lot of memories. It was a great song, and I think of the city every time I hear it.
Notice the bilboard ad for the "TD Green Machine" in the background at 2:32? That was TD Bank's name for their ATM machines, which were just being introduced at that time.
I imagine anyone who has since moved far away from Toronto, becomes overwhelmed with nostalgia when watching this video. I still live near T.O. and I get so nostalgic
For the longest time (27 years!) I never knew the name of this song. I just called it the "...doot-doot-doot-doot-dodododooo!" song. Yes, I never paid attention in highschool to pop music songs. Just last week my highschool buddy told me the name of this song-ROMANTIC TRAFFIC by The Spoons! And, it's even filmed on the TTC, here in Toronto! Those old red trains, frizzy hair, big hair bows, large ROUND framed glasses, oh baby-- the 80's! The happiest time of my life with such great music too!
One of the best things about growing up on the Canadian/USA border is getting the Toronto/Fort Erie radio stations. Would have never heard this, plus all those other great Canadian artists.
I lived in Toronto for six+ years and I rode the TTC subway so much. What a great way it was to get around the most awesome city in the world. I go there still at least 3-4 times a year and always have my mp3 filled songs of the 70s and 80's and downtown is the best place to listen to them. Timeless memories of an incredible musical era.
Great song. I remember riding those oldies and ending up at the Jolly Miller or the Chick N Deli. Although the ride back rarely remembered. Possibly the only way to fall asleep on those was by passing out.

This reminds me so much of going to the big city in the 80's. Eaton Centre, all the arcades close by and getting a bite at 'The Big Slice' before taking the bus back to Niagara.
The keyboard player's girlfriend is way too cute. I love this band, it reminds me of being young in the 80's. What a great time everyone had back then. I only wish I was more into new wave back then, and not so much metal.
@orhenblood In the old interview with John Roberts on youtube Rob says that his girlfriend is in this video as well as his sister. Isn't she the blonde sitting next to Rob's sister?
and like stides40, I sometimes refused to go on until the red subway trains come on with a school trip, daycare, and with family in the '80's also draw them as well.
I think it's the Bloor Street Station at Yonge Street Line. The Yonge line runs above the Bloor Line at the Bloor - Yonge Station. You can see that the escalators are going down to the Bloor line. Only 2 stations at that time had two levels. They were Bloor - Yonge and St. George. St. George station was blue. Spadina had two train lines but they were on the same level. Remember Spadina has along mechanical walkway.
thanks:) yeah, I think I see it now. The Spadina station always confuses me. I've only been there like 2 times though :P. lol I'm trying to imagine St. George as blue...it will always be green in my head hahah. but yeah, thanks for that, appreciate it
@darkoanton5: It was filmed partially at Yonge station as well as Sheppard. The scenes with the yellow tiles are at Yonge. The parts with the blue tiles are Sheppard. And St. George has always had green tiles.
Wow...just goes to show how much Toronto is run down now. Thanks Mike Harris and all the other politicians who have cut the TTC and every other public service. Makes me angry as hell...but the song is as good ever. Love the Spoons!
I hate the new TTC presidnet, Gambrioni or something... he has pretty much run the TTC to the ground. I hate to think what he's gonna do to Toronto if he gets elected as mayor, because he wants to run. I have to wait almost 20-30 mins (sometimes 45) for a bus that should be coming every 10 minutes! (Anyways, don't know why I'm ranting at you, sorry about that...but i just wanted to say that I agree with you)
Fixing public transit needs Fed. and Prov. $ How 'bout some of that Afghan war money? Is anyone running for Mayor who wants to fix the TTC? Doubt it...cheers! Spoons rule man!
@rockmonst3r: Giambrone hasn't run the TTC into the ground...what you're hearing is right-wing bullshit from the Toronto Sun & National Post that isn't true...try to find out more about LRT first and why Toronto needs LRT over subway by checking out why other cities have done so...learn about public transit issues in more depth..and finally, try to figure out transit times before you leave the house.
I love seeing the Toronto subway stations. They've changed soooo much. No more old red subways either. Even, the scenery out the windows is totally different.
Interesting tidbit: anyone with Galaxy Music channels on satellite/digital TV, check out who the music programmer is for the 80s channel. You may find him in this video.

@orhenblood In the old interview with John Roberts on youtube Rob says that his girlfriend is in this video as well as his sister. Isn't she the blonde sitting next to Rob's sister?
They played in my town a couple times back then.
TheExeter 1 year ago
@orhenblood They actually went to Aldershot. They said that at their show tonight.

I remember the red subway cars when I was a kid
and like stides40, I sometimes refused to go on until the red subway trains come on with a school trip, daycare, and with family in the '80's also draw them as well.
digitalman28 1 year ago
Didn't the lights go out every couple of minutes on those old red subway cars?
keef186 1 year ago
Yes, they do, don't know why, just to save electricity lol.

Those people singing along will go down in time, and can tell their kids/grandkids they were in a music video.
Damn this song is catchy though.

Can anyone tell me all the stations at which they're at? I'm trying to recognize them, but my how they've changed! :O
It's great though. I wish I lived in Toronto in the 80s hahah
rockmonst3r 2 years ago
I think it's the Bloor Street Station at Yonge Street Line. The Yonge line runs above the Bloor Line at the Bloor - Yonge Station. You can see that the escalators are going down to the Bloor line. Only 2 stations at that time had two levels. They were Bloor - Yonge and St. George. St. George station was blue. Spadina had two train lines but they were on the same level. Remember Spadina has along mechanical walkway.
darkoanton5 1 year ago
thanks:) yeah, I think I see it now. The Spadina station always confuses me. I've only been there like 2 times though :P. lol I'm trying to imagine St. George as blue...it will always be green in my head hahah. but yeah, thanks for that, appreciate it
rockmonst3r 1 year ago
Glad to be of help.
darkoanton5 1 year ago
@darkoanton5: It was filmed partially at Yonge station as well as Sheppard. The scenes with the yellow tiles are at Yonge. The parts with the blue tiles are Sheppard. And St. George has always had green tiles.

@rockmonst3r: They're at Bloor Station and at Lawrence Station.

Wow...just goes to show how much Toronto is run down now. Thanks Mike Harris and all the other politicians who have cut the TTC and every other public service. Makes me angry as hell...but the song is as good ever. Love the Spoons!
victoria1907 2 years ago
Yeah, I totally agree with you!
(Anyways, don't know why I'm ranting at you, sorry about that...but i just wanted to say that I agree with you)
rockmonst3r 2 years ago
Fixing public transit needs Fed. and Prov. $ How 'bout some of that Afghan war money? Is anyone running for Mayor who wants to fix the TTC? Doubt it...cheers! Spoons rule man!
victoria1907 2 years ago

I love this song ... brings back a lot of the feel of the 80's.
However, at 3:20 there's a dude with glasses and an huge chin that looks like Bubbles from the Trailer Park Boys.
