  • thats a post war train made in the usa and is from the 50's whatever you do DONT sell it!

  • I have seen one very similar but it did not have the observation car for $589.00 very nice loco

  • THAT SET IS ONE OF LIONELS TOP OF THE LINE SETS MADE IN THE EARLY PREWAR TIMES RIGHT ALONG WITH THE STD GAUGE BLUE COMMET SET THAT CAME OUT A FEW YEARS LATER I HAVE A LOT OF DVD VIDEOS MADE BY TM THATS MOSTLY ABOUT PREWAR & POSTWAR TRAIN SETS AND THIS IS ONE OF THE SETS THAT THAY TALK ABOUT WHEN IT COMES TO PREWAR LIONEL TRAINS AND THE SAY THIS ENGINE RAN UNDER THE HUDSON RIVER BECAUSE THAY BANDED STEAM ENGINE TO RUN UNDER THE HUDSON RIVER STILL TO THIS DAY STILL NO STEAM CAN RUN THERE

  • worth considerably more the 200. mmore like 200 each and the engine more close to 300 plus. its great. keep it.

  • @ptchapmanusmcret Ya i know,i was being sarcastic to his comment,lol.....i was told between 200-300 on the cars and 500 on the engine is what the pricing is in the price guide. Its not going anywhere, trust me : )

  • im not an expert on preway trains, it probily from 1919 to 1920 something. it is prewar and if in working condition you could get about 150 to 200 dollars

  • @fatzGeronimo $150-200? Ya,i definatly don't think your an expert on prewaY trains, lmao but thanks for your comment.

  • I recently fixed a 1930s Lionel train set for a friend from work. Everything about it is very well built, and it works nice and smooth. Your's should serve you for a long time as long as you take care of it.

  • Nice set you've got there! Those old Lionels are built very well, and as long as the parts are still good (which it looks like they are), getting it running is mostly a matter of cleaning. Your track looks a little bent up, but it may still be usable. If not, check out MTH for new standard gauge track. And as for a transformer, a Lionel Type T should work well. The Type T transformers are old, but they're powerful, robust, and inexpensive compared to modern transformers.

  • great news all...i dropped this off at a dealer to have repaired.Hes not sure if i'll have it by christmas but he said it will be no problem to get it running again,He was excited as heck when i brought it in : )

  • boy, your grandfather must be a rich kid getting an expensive Lionel "Standard" 420 train set! In1918, my father and along with his brothers got an American Flyer windup set with figure-8 track. Years later my father found a 1927 Ives Southern Pacific 0 gauge set in tan in a second hand store. I still have it today. Thanks for sharing.

  • i believe its a 1919 lionel.

  • is it for sale??

  • These are correct for the loco. You have the 18, 19, and 190 passenger cars. These were made in a lot of variations. The long platform on the observation car dates it to having been made prior to 1918. After 1918, the deck was shortened. Likewise, the hook couplers do not have support brackets, which were added to these cars in 1918, so, the whole set, given the loco, I would say dates from 1918. The loco has features first seen in 1918, the cars have features last seen in 1918.

  • @nachtjager77 I am glad to see yours. We have one like this from a great grandma. I love trains!!!

  • @13Kitties13 do you have yours working?any videos up on here?

  • Hi, I have a set like yours, you can get transformers on ebay really cheap for these trains. And you can find parts for them on ebay as well.

    Have fun !

  • your train is a Lionel #42 engine. they were made from 1913-1923. it was designed after a 1912 NYC prototype engine. it came in two basic versions. with one motor(1913-23) or two motors(1921-23). the cars are most likely #18 Pullman car, #19 Combine car & it's #190 observation car. these are the early Lionel trains before their Classic period 1924-42.

I have Classic period trains. it should not take too much to make them runs fine again. good luck.

  • my mom says it has'nt ran since she was a kid in the 50's so i'm assuming that was the last time it was ran,the transformer has been lost so i'll have to buy one somewhere, but yes i plan on getting it rewired and running again and i'll post vids when i do,thanks for your intrest.

  • its a lionel standerd gauge thats all i know. it is from the late teens early twentys. if it hasnt run in a wile i would take care starting it up or u might blow the moter. its really cool, man r u lucky to have it. ive only seen those thing in musams. post a video if u get it to run. nice man.

  • thanks for your comment.

  • I'm not a standard gauge expert, but I think this is a Lionel #420 pullman set. I have seen trains like this one in old Lionel catalogs going back to about 1913 through 1920. About 60 years before my time, but very cool!
