THere is a bunch of state troopers in my area that drive drunk, They protect each others butts so no one is ever charged, fraternal order of police, code of silence etc, how is it that someone gets these criminals behind bars?
exactly how does it work here, the u.s. has the largest prison population in the world, i guess you mean it works in filling up our prison system and creating a financial nightmare on our tax dollars than yes it does work in doing that
But the guy decided to start his car and get into it. Also, he decided to drink. All his own choices. Also, depraved indifference murder is defined as actions which are "so wanton, so deficient in a moral sense of concern, so lacking in regard for the life or lives of others, and so blameworthy as to warrant the same criminal liability as that which the law imposes upon a person who intentionally causes a crime."
If you decide to drink and drive, then you're basically saying you don't care if someone gets killed because of your action. It's not like he drove drunk and didn't know that it was a bad idea. This is why it's a bad idea to have the Democrats in power—they don't believe in locking up violent, convicted criminals.
make sure you only blame them for not believing in locking up violent convicted criminals if you would willingly and readily accept an 18 year to life sentence if you did the same thing.
This is indeed sad, but I have a problem with sending people into prison for 15 years to life. These people go to jail and someday they will come back into society. & we think by locking them up it address the issue of their problem but it does not. We need to reform the prison system and help prisoners cope with their problems through therapy, rehab and education.
jfmj83, If you have a problem with the justice system & how criminals are locked up for a long time, that's your problem! Your comment would probably win the award for being the most stupid one posted. People are responsible for their actions!!! If you kill someone because of your stupidity or wants, then you pay. Putting them through rehab and stuff will not say that they won't go kill again. I guess locking up Ed Gein and Jeffrey Dahmer was a mistake, huh???
Yes, it is such a tragedy, but let us think about this in the big picture: at the very least, the prosecutor(s) here, who have taken an oath of office to uphold the constitution, and perhaps the adult victims, exhibit gross indifference when it comes to the killing and maiming of men, women and children in other countries by the U.S. military.
Untimely death is hard on all concerned, not just Americans, and it is hypocrisy and stupidity to think we are the only ones who love our own.
I can't imagine why anyone should get anything less than life for an unjustified homicide. if you kill someone for no good reason, I don't see why the fact that you chose to drink and drive should somehow make the crime less serious.

If I decide to start randomly shooting a gun and i hit and kill someone, but didn't intend to, am I not culpable?

Here in Australia one bloke got 22 months for killing a 11 month old girl. He hit her on her own front yard.

I think that drunk drivers should get stronger penalties. Why would you give a drunk driver 1 year in prison?!
