Does anybody know from which year this production is? I was part of the cast of the 1972 production in Munich, during the Olympic Games, and I was the the Heiduck leader at the time.
@LohengrinT No no no, even the critics said that this label belongs to Kathleen Battle. "Battle is for sure, the greatest Sophie in the history of the role".
@LohengrinT That's why I've said "even the critics", the "even" stands for the fact that besides the critics, is public knowledge that Battle is the best Sophie in the role's history. Popp was an outstanding Sophie(a close second), but Battle as Sophie is simply transcendental, unbeatable.
Evey woman can fall in love with the Octavian performed by Brigitte Fassbaender : she is GREAT and her singing is marvellous , light , nice and warm , technically the best - I think Mlle Fassbaender is the MUSIC ! I know today she makes prestigious Master Classes : I would pay a year of my life to get there to attend her Lessons .
Thanks a lot Miss Fassbaender for all the wonderfull years you gave to us of beautyfull Music and Singing !
I wouldn't even bother comparing Popp with Battle and Stitch-Randall - both wonderful singers, to be sure, but their performances can't even begin to touch Popp for warmth, sincerity, and humanity. Battle always struck me as a trifle coy, while Stitch-Randall was rather vapid in her characterization. Then non-verbal communication between Lucia and Brigitte in this scene is terrific; they really get into the roles of these shy yet flirtatious young people. No need to comment about the singing.
I adore Popp. Battle was also wonderful and I had the luck to see her with Troyanos and Lear (her 2nd to last performance at the Met). I think it's all just degrees of greatness when it comes to them and Stich-Randall.
I also love Bonney on the two videos she's in. though vocally she may not be at quite the same level, her portrayal of girlish exuberance is dead on. Especially in the TeKanawa, Solti video, which is 10 yrs. earlier than the Lott, Kleiber one.
I'm sorry, but given the fact that Popp Sang it longer and a lot earlier than battle, it is the other way around. Battle was a good Sophie, but she aspired to reach this lever and not the other way around. Whether she did or not is a matter of interpretation and taste; but let's not get confused here; by the time Battle sang this role, Popp had basically owned for 10-15 years
You are correct, Popp came first and Battle did aspire to reach the heights of those who came before her. I have not heard Popp sing this role in her prime so it is hard to compare her with Battle in *her* prime which is available and stunningly beautiful.
recordings on both artists in their prime singing this role are available. I am not a Battle fan and I think her Sophie is stunning. I think they both are a tad below Teresa Stich-Randall as Sophie.
