Way simpler. This is one motor, one axle, and one wheel with constant motion about one axis. The videos to which this one is in response show much more complex mechanisms with far more pieces and multiple motors, not to mention the mindstorms microcontroller.
This device is very simple: it's easy to fabricate and easy to fathom.
