This is one of my favorite movies. Forest Whitaker and Jodie Foster were great for their roles. I didn't like Raul. He showed his true colors told the end -- he was just an inexperienced bus driven that was nothing without his gun.
The opening sequence is not special. I know it sounds like I am just being a hater but I've seen a lot of opening sequences and if you think its one of the greatest then you clearly haven't seen many films.
@stratocaster1986able it's great because it's the first one being done like that, almost impossible at that time. David Fincher said it took a little less than a year to finally put them together.
Of course Fringe can now make them in CGI and stuff, but back then it was a lot harder.
I love David Fincher's style, but I'm ambivalent about his use of CG dolly shots like this. On one hand they're cool as hell and they give you a sense of what's going on in the 3D space of the scene, but sometimes I think he over-uses them. My favorite movie of his is still Seven, and that movie had little if any CG.
In fact, it was done with a computer, but emulating a crane, and a dolly. "dolly" shot is just a name that refers to a bunch of things. It´s like saying that french fries are, in fact, made with potatoes from other countries. Cinism sucks.
Stylish! Really cool. I really want to makes titles like that.. The perspective is quite easy, but I don't know how to make them stand still in one point of the pictures.. (please tell me if you know: appreciated.)
i definitely like all that sequence, but the quality is so low i didnt see the dolly shot, i mean where the fuck was it, should i watch it again? because i guess its just very hard to see and not really a spectacular one, otherwise i would have seen it
For me, a dolly shot is simply an in-and-out steady form of filming (I saw a lot of definitions that included that terms). Sometimes it might have a vertical form, but it´s mainly in the horizontal and it´s usually managed by rails or tracks. In this sequenece you can see it clearly inspite of being cgi created (that's the thing!) i don´t pretend to be splitting hairs or anything, but i guess if you try, in a non-ciical way, you can also see it. No?
thats not a dolly shot and doesn't really have a technical name, although Sam Raimi does call it "warp-o cam." A dolly shot is technically when a camera is put on a cart/truck or dolly and moved. There is no zooming. When tracks or rails are used it's called tracking. Both are pretty synonymous, though, since you can't really tell which was used while watching the movie.
ok i was wrong, thats a new situation. i thought i'd remembered that people call it dolly when its the same thing as a "vertigo" shot. im pretty sure my description atleast somehow fitted vertigo.
David Fincher is my favorite director, hands down. His visuals are so distinct and unforgettable. I'm so glad you posted this on here because a lot of people over look how incredible this opening sequence and dolly shot are! Darius Khondji and Conrad Hall did such a great job, I'm a huge fan of them as well.
You failed the vocabulary segment of film school didn't you?

@scatterbrain73 Exactly!!! There is a moment in the sequence I start looking technique instead of story.

The "Dolly Shot" part is actually a "Sequence Shot"

David Fincher is a great director.

The actual correct name is "sequence shot". Dolly shot is NOT "just a name", it clearly involves some kind of railing or wheeled platform.
planetfiber 3 years ago
But it might be called dolly, if you consider the 'virtual' rails and wheeled platform, like whem it crosses the coffee maker or the key hole.

Well since it's "virtual" how about we make it a "virtual helicopter" and call it a helicopter shot?
Sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but I stand by my statement. The correct name is sequence shot.
planetfiber 2 years ago
That's precisely what i mean, yes you could call it. At least, i would, ut of course you can have another idea. This time i`ll let you.

that "dolly" shot, looks like it was clearly done with a crane

a dolly shot is either when you zoom in while moving away or when you zoom out while moving towards forward
its as easy as that. and i didnt see that in the video, which doesnt mean it wasnt there
its still a good movie scene
NiNm62 3 years ago
No it´s not. And it´s there a few times.
