I wonder why there ws no monitoring at night given the precarious situation of the elephant mother's health. Luck won out here, the baby survived, but what did the zoo say as to why they did not have a caregiver on duty?
did the zoo keepers know she was pregnant? this is beyond sickening she should have been watched what was the point of these cameras if nobody is monitoring them.really upsetting that the elephants themselves did more to help than the people in charge of caring for these beautiful creatures.shame on these zoos who cant properly care for the animals and give them all they need to survive behind bars.
There are 100s of well recorded elephant births in cyberspace, but 2 that best illustrate the IMMEDIATE & continuous involvement of mothers can be gleaned in the following:
#1: PBS's ECHO - An Elephant to Remember; #2. "Elephant Birth" (amateur, by Nathan Kaufman).
In each case, from the young & anxious mother, in #2 (healthy birth), to the very experienced & confident & older mother, in #1, in the film ECHO (in a VERY difficult set of circumstances), we SEE how mothers get their babies ready.
"he would have never made it in the Wild..? "...in the Wild he would have not fallen under the gate and he would have had the rest of the herd there to assist the mother after the difficult birth! The place where these elephants have to live looks like St. Quinton jail to me. So many bars and fences...it is discussting!
@hrimatidasi He was stuck in the birth canal and that caused him to be unable to function for a long time...the family would have not been able to hand feed him to give him the strength to stay alive long enough to recover...they have to stand up to nurse....There are a lot of bars because they are in the indoor area...outdoors it is open....the reason for all of the bars is because elephant can easily kill the trainers and sometimes do so they have to be somewhat restrained inside.
It's not so much as being too long in the birth canal; it's that the baby's mother was not able to nudge, coax, & help clean & dry the baby immediately after being born, to make it dry enough to stand & stretch its clumpsy muscles --- which need to be stimulated by baby, mother, & others immediately after birth, for many minutes. When the baby rolled out of the steel enclosure, the mother & her helpers, for hours, couldn't do any thing to help stimulate it. It's humans fault, not the mother's...
@HenryDavidT Baby elephants are usually born in a matter of minutes...this does not show in real time the how long he was stuck...and no that is not the mothers fault...it just happens and can cause things like permanent nerve damage with or without a fence...so that is not the keepers fault either...this baby was just really really lucky to survive without horrible permanent damage...
@lironess It is, yes, part of nature that many babies are born with nerve damage, physical problems, etc.
The point to THIS birth is that, DESPITE its difficulty, he WAS a very healthy baby. That despite being without help from his mother for a couple hours, right AFTER brith, due to MAN's fault, he SURVIVED. To say he WOULD NOT have survived being born in the wild is, at best, GRATUITOUS. Why? Because in the wild, he would've received IMMEDIATE & continuous help from his mother.
@HenryDavidT He was NOT a healthy baby. He was damaged. The mother does not have hands in case you did not notice. The mother could not have helped him to stand quickly enough to nurse. With HUMAN assistance he was able to recover from the nerve damage that had absolutely NOTHING to do with the gate. In the end he was able to be nurtured by HUMANS to health but lacking hands and medical equipment his mother would have had to watch him die. Face reality.
