  • can you play pc games on ps3 Linux

  • @awsome7user nope. This was a primitive stab at gaining access to the GPU, which was later shut down.

  • can you play c games on ps3 Linux

  • Was this ever released?

  • @SuperPSTutorials It was available via iron's public SVN on the ps2dev forums. You can go back over there and check it out, it may still be available - but keep in mind you need a pretty early firmware to run this.

  • You're right - I've been thinking about that for a bit. Once I finish my thesis, I will certainly consider writing some 3D stuff using the new environment.

  • I hate iPhone auto correct! Glaurung**

  • Maybe iron and gallrung can get back to work now that absentOS is working with game privileges instead of OOS hypervisor restrictions. Yay!

  • does anyone know if you could install the NVIDIA RSX in a pc?

my graphics card just broke down and my ps3s blu ray drive is banjaxed so i dont really give a fuck about it. could i possibly frankenstien it in?

and if so,do i need to buy any "bridging" hardware or software to make it work?

  • Update: OS Feature has been removed. So all your dreams of the 3D Linux World have been crushed.... :(

  • this is one small step for homebrew games, one large step for hombrew gamers!!

  • Nice. Keep it up

  • what sony does not want to see is a 3d driver that lets you emulate ps2 with ps2sx in linux...

  • LOL. The PS3 can run PS2 games without linux...

  • there's no more ps2 emulation on the ps3... Only the first ps3 had this possibility.

  • There is still ps2 emulation. It's just that Sony used software rendering instead of the Emotion engine this time.

  • and that made it suck.......real hard

  • i don't know. My 60 GB broke and in exchange, I got the 80GB model. Whats the difference in the emotion engine vs. the software rendering? I don't see a graphical difference. Looks the same to me.

  • Thats weird, when i play Final fantasy 12 on my ps3 the cgi cutscenes get youtube quality, and the gameplay is really edgy.

  • did you turn on ps1/ps2 smoothing and upscaling in the menu?

  • only one version of it can run ps2 and ps1 games and it has been discontinued for some stupid reason. it was the 80gig version

  • good luck!.. u think sony will ever just give us access ?

  • Probably not at least considering their pattern with the firmware updates of breaking things the PS2/3 dev people work on. I wish they'd let us keep working with this stuff, but as it stands, I wouldn't hold my breath.

  • Who said anything about pirating games or running games at all in Linux?

With access to the GPU we could at least be able to do nice desktop effects as well as higher quality video playback.

  • yes, thats the only reason ii want the gpu access. Today I installed Ubuntu and tried to play a 720p video, but it lags like hell. 1 picture in 1 second.

But a mkv support and srt support for the ps3 would be enough.

  • Sweeeet

  • a google search linked me to the apple website. unreal tourney does run. specs below

System Requirements * Mac OS X 10.2.8 or later * 3369 patch previously installed * 800MHz PowerPC G4 processor or better * 256MB of RAM * 32MB video card or higher

  • But Linux =/= Mac. There is no compatibility layer like Wine to simulate Mac binaries. So it's either PPC Linux or nothing.

  • why doesnt sony just let us use the damn thing... i dont get it.

  • mac version, duh, need i say more?

  • ah i hate sony! why enable linux and not letting ppl take use of the hardware. Sucks balls

  • They made it available for the CPU, but since we have access to the GPU now via this, it's all good :)

  • no we dont! its a big different to hack to it and use it with lets say VLC. When its out for the public you can say it's all good. Right now it sucks!

  • thanks, i wanted to know.

    good luck with that project

  • will ut2004 work? it uses opengl so with a bit of work...

  • I heard that PS3 firmware 2.10 won't allow linux to use the RSX at all, despite your advancements. have you found a loophole in this development? if you have, please get back to me. I really want to run the RSX since I would like to develop 3d games and the ps3 although powerful, isn't as nimble with only 192 MB of R.A.M.

  • I haven't really done very much at all for the project. Iron Peter is the guy who really did all the driving "hacking." And to date, afaik, he has not gotten around FW 2.10. I don't have any interest in upgrading and do not have his expertise, so it's unlikely a hack will come from me.

  • Scottylans, that is correct. I don't know, since I am still using the old pre-2.10 firmware, I don't know, but according to the guy who really drove most of this development, the 2.10 firmware does put a major stopper in the development.

I did not install it the normal way, you do need a custom kernel (you actually need to modify the kernel or at least apply a patch). Am actually using gentoo, so there isn't any standard way to install it anyway :-p.

  • Did you install Linux the proprietary way on that PS3 or through a custom setup? I thought that the RSX completely turned off when booting any operating system other than the one Sony provides. That's pretty amazing, it'd be awesome if OpenGL was implemented.

  • I believe this has now been blocked by Sony hasn't it? Delaying progress of XBMC for PS3? :(

  • this is 2d with 2d

  • Incorrect. Take a look at the spinning part, there are three quads each at a tilt to the other, so there is no one in front of the others. It's using a z-buffer and everything. The other demonstration by the person who made the video response shows considerably more.

  • great work. This means a lot for the homebrew scene. Thx for the effort.

  • Can the ps3 play playstion, ps2. gamecube, xbox emulators now that theirs the 3D thing?

  • No. This is intended for, as I said homebrew software. It is possible for one to manually modify the code for something to enable it's use on the PS3, but as far as I know, no one is planning on targeting any newer systems to this.

  • you can already watch mkv video in Linux

  • Really? Without transcoding? I think you're full of...

  • so.. does this mean that watching 1080p mkv videos in linux will be possible?

  • Yeah, thanks for uploading this. It's nice to see that PS3 Linux is indeed alive and well.

  • Nice job on the video. I also was wondering what this(or any variation) looked like. I´ve been watching this with interest even though I don´t have the know-how to run it.

    Thanks

  • Thanks for showing this demo, I wondered what it looked like :)

  • This isn't what the real demo looks like though. The original one is a little more diagnostic with a colored gradient noise texture -- and not in motion. I forgot to mention earlier in the comments, this is only on a 480i (non-hd) TV, the original was on a High Def system.

  • can we see thats original ?

Can we see the linux desktop then the 3d demo ?

Can we know what linux version is it ?

Can we know wen a driver for linux will be possible? and if beryl or copermise will be enable ?

  • 1) What do you mean see that it's original?

    2) I'm not running X on my PS3, only the PS3 code. My desktop is just a console.

    3) It's a version of Gentoo with a custom kernel.

    4) AFAIK, there is no current expectation to support OpenGL in this method. This means you don't get OpenGL support out of box, and thus can't run beryl or compiz with it.
