For some reason I have never heard of this movie until it recently came on Comcast. I would put it up with one of the top romance films of our time similar to the status of Dr. Zhivago but not quite that good. However, I've since purchased the DVD for my collection and will see it now and then for years to come.....I wonder what this film would have been like if David Lean did produce/direct it......

This was THE first movie edited by Walter Murch using AVID editing. You can see the better quality compared to the other movie he edited using Final Cut,  "Cold Mountain". He is a true pioneer in the film editing industry.

I love this movie. I hated Atonement, I was mad at myself for watching it afterwards. You'd think I wouldn't like this movie, either, because it isn't the happiest of movies. But Atonement was just beyond depressing, and the fact that they pretended it ended well for five minutes and then told the sad truth, ugh, never have I hated a little girl so much. Also, I don't feel like this trailer does the movie justice at all.

This is about a hundred times better than Atonement the books better too, although Atonement is more faithful to the book. Kristin is absolutely ravishing in this movie. Casablanca is the only movie I consider to better than this in this genre. RIP Anthony Minghella

Its probably too late now as you wrote this comment two months ago. But I would actually recommend watching the film first. The book is brilliant but many of my mates who read it couldn't follow the storyline that well so if you watch the film before hand you wont have this problem. Both the book and film are spectacular.

This movie has an amazing dramatic world - desert, romance, Italy, the skies. But the photography is meaningless, the acting is screwed up all over the place (Defoe is way the best). It's no Lawrence of Arabia by any stretch. Makes for a great trailer though. A great aura and an event.
