yo ZHD...if you're an adult,  you don't want to start on anything shorter than 8'...if you're heavy, get 3 1/2" thick min…if you're light, 2 1/2" to 2 7/8" thick…if you start on a short board, it's too hard to catch and get up unless you have perfect surf...you won't last

Nice tips.

I just paid $60 for a lesson. My main problem when getting on the wave (just the white water to start with) was the board kept veering off to the left or right. When the water hit, I would just get dumped every time without even trying to stand. I now realise this is because I was paddling too wide like you said. It made the board unstable.

Actually you shouldn't follow through.. I was taught how to surf by Los Angeles County Lifeguards and they told me that you should NEVER EVER follow through so far that your hand flicks water up into the air...

i skated and snowboarded too, but surfing is pretty different. i suggest to hire a practise board, (i didnt do), but a practise board is much more stable, and easier to control, then with that board i dont really know how long it takes, but i had a real (short)board from the beginning, and i learned it pretty good in 2-3 days everyday pactise, so good luck
