Love this man - but what an odd technique! I've never seen anyone, for instance, use 3 (!) fingers on the lowest note when playing a forte octave (e.g. 0:21)
@hymntonight Nice, I never noticed that the first time watching this. I thought I was the only one crazy enough to do this and assumed it was a bad habit I'd have to fix later on. Seeing that one of my favourite pianists does it also is a relief!
Ivo Pogorelich was an enigma when he first came on the scene way back in the 1980's when I first became aware of him. He is no less an enigma now.
He is BRILLIANT in amost everything he does. His interpretations of the great masters are unrivalled to this day,
Yet with Pogorelish, there is no middle ground - you either love him or you hate him, I have never heard it said otherwise. He will, certainly, be remembered as one of the greatest pianists of all time. In my humble opinion, that is.
too much friggin bass ! the first note of the melody sings. (ms. 9) it sings! after that the melody is drowned out. who cares. its a great piece ! JMO
Could it be because he is a great pianist and compelling musician? NAme one pianist alive today who has such great imagination; he reminds me of the greats of yesteryear, e.g., Rosenthal, Hoffman, Rachmaninoff, Horowitz, Cortot, et. al.

Nowadays YouTube permits uploading of videos 15 minutes long. This Pogorelich recording deserves the entire Polonaise in a single video, without cut.

I'm not usually a fan of Pogorelich, but for some reason this performance captivates me.
