It hurts for me to admit this, but UCLA's Drumline is in fact better than USC's Drumline. The line as a whole is a lot cleaner. You can hear it in the snares if you compare the two lines. UCLA pis able to play a lot tighter and cleaner.
I am saying that it hurts to admit it because I am and always will be a USC fan. :)
@dfisk79 A) this isn't a corp. B) Let's see how your chops feel after 10 hours of playing. C) There are few college lines that can boast even this level of cleanliness.
I seriously doubt it was 10 hours straight of playing. I've done full days of rudimental stuff. Once you've built up your chops, it's no big deal. Also, I've heard lots of college lines that sound better. University of Illinois, North Texas, Michigan State...hell, even Eastern Illinois is as good if not better. Like I said, if you can't hear the schlocki-ness, then you don't know how to listen.
But honestly, the USC band is the laughing stock of college marching bands. When I talked to some of the guys on the BYU drumline at the Las Vegas bowl, they knew exactly what was up with USC...
wow my drumline got this back in the summer and our tempo doesn't even come close to ucla's...amazing but i think we do pretty good for a high school drumline.
At the time of this video, I think the ucla line was using really crappy premier drums. But this year, they got a whole new line of yamahas. I know their snares are sfz's this year.

My high school plays this cadence, only there's more bass drums involved, and it sounds really epic.

I couldn't find a single spot that sounded particularly unclean... don't know what you're talking about.

Uh....most of the rolls and big rim shots were all schlocky. If you can't hear it, then you don't know what to listen for.

I like the UCLA cadence better, even being a USC fan. Too bad they don't do the little stick charades their rivals do.

I freaking love this cadence, we play it but not nearly as clean. This is one of my top favorite cadences, up next to ditty and double beat.

i think usc cadences are better, i know all of both ucla and usc (i think) on tenors and some on snare
but thats just be cause im a drum nerd and i learn watever music i can get :)

There's no way in hell USC's drumline is better than this. I'm not even a fan of UCLA (I'm on the University of Arizona snare line) and I know this.
I'd like to meet these guys. They play well.
Also, this video has an awesome camera angle.
Drummerguy123 3 years ago
idk about the drumline. but i personally like usc's music a bit more both are great though

isn't Stanford the laughing stock of college marching bands? i can imagine anyone being worse.
SDHSdrummer 3 years ago 5
Even if they are worse, they certainly don't have the reputation USC does.
Drummerguy123 3 years ago
Different styles. UCLA = DCI, USC = Show. They do different things and they each do their own thing well.
